Lacquered wooden duck made by indigenous people in Southern Colombia

Bruce, I uploaded this photo for you, we had talked about it; I took the photo about 2 years ago. Maybe I'll do it again. These umbrellas have their own magic.

I found this little violett mushroom (Purple lacquer funnel) and trumpet braiding yesterday in the woods, so cuted out the little ghost to arrange this Halloween still life for MM.

In the Palazzo Mora (Sestiere Cannaregio, Venice)

Gold are the great trees overhead,

And gold the leaf-strewn grass,

As though a cloth of gold were spread

To let a seraph pass.

And where the pageant should go by,

Meadow and wood and stream,

The world is all of lacquered gold,

Expectant as a dream.

Against the sunset's burning gold,

Etched in dark monotone

Behind its alley of grey trees

And gateposts of grey stone,

Stands the Old Manse, about whose eaves

An air of mystery clings,

Abandoned to the lonely peace

Of bygone ghostly things.

In molten gold the river winds

With languid sweep and turn,

Beside the red-gold wooded hill

Yellowed with ash and fern.

The air is flecked with filtered gold,—

The shimmer of romance

Whose ageless glamour still must hold

The world as in a trance,

Pouring o'er every time and place

Light of an amber sea,

The spell of all the gladsome things

That have been, or shall be.

Well, actually, I ran out of time ;) This is my last-minute attempt, photographed last night, no fuss handheld, after numerous attempts of photographing through the peephole of a "magic wand kaleidoscope" that comes with transparent, round plastic sticks that are filled with liquid and floating, glittery stuff that creates the typical patterns when put into the kaleidoscope. Here's a link to the Big River so you can see what it looks like:

It almost worked, but only almost. So I grabbed the nail enamel I bought for the theme, and made a smiley but it looked a little to diffuse, so in the end, I settled for a colourful heart that I painted onto the underside of a white espresso cup (the heart is still there) and then used a toothpick to mix the colours, kind of in a clumsy "wet in wet icing" style.

Exposure metering was set to "HI". I made minimal adjustments in post to make the colours pop a little more than they already did, and slightly brightened the background in the corners where the concave shape of the cup's underside had created a slight vignetting. That's it.

The heart's size is 2x2 cm / 0,78x0,78 inches.

HMM, Everyone, and have a nice week ahead!

P.S. I'm busy today and will catch up with you tonight.

“Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting, which came to an end with the collapse of Imperial Russia. The icon painters, who previously had been employed by supplying not only churches but people's homes, needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales.” This one seemed incredibly beautiful to me....

This is the first panoramic triptych I've taken in about two years. Needless to say, I was rusty. I also didn't align things properly because I *had* a system, but sort of forgot what it was, and then half-remembered it, but thought I had fully-remembered it, but I was wrong.

So anyway, this is as good as a first attempt in two years could be.

It's also shot on Kodak Copy Film, which I'm *technically* still testing, so it doesn't look quite right. You need to expose each frame exactly like the others. Otherwise, the effect is off.

Also, the sheet I used for the left frame had a bit of moisture damage, which you'll sometimes get with 50 year old film.

I also forgot my "normal" lenses, which I use for these pano-triptychs. The "normal" lenses don't have any detectable fall off at the edge of the frames. The old ass lenses that I usually use have oodles of fall off, which I mitigated as much as possible by shooting it with the aperture closed as far as it would close.

Also, also, also, I cut the film wonky. The holders that I have been using (Toyo) are a sliver of a millimeter smaller than normal ones. For industry-produced 4x5 film, this doesn't matter. But when you cut your own, you have to be super careful, which I wasn't.

But this was a lovely morning scene and I'm glad I shot it. And if you're still reading this, I'm glad you did. Thanks!

The Green Lacquer Room takes its name from the emerald green lacquered furniture from Palazzo Calbo Crotta at Canneregio, with its decorative elements in gilded pastiglia (that is, a kind of stucco made with plaster and marble dust). Eastern and European motifs thus merged to form an independent new style which, it should be specified, was wholly western: this style was known as chinoiserie. Decorative motifs from oriental prototypes were applied to western forms and types, as in the furniture here.
