This butterfly is missing one of the labial palps around the mouth. Ready to fly after posing for the photo. It's hard to take clear photos inside the atrium of the gardens, temperature is about 85 (outside was 45), the lens glass becomes foggy and the poor light doesn't help.
◾Malachite (Siproeta stelenes) is a Neotropical brush-footed butterfly. The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings.◾

Glechoma hirsuta (Lamiaceae) 099 21
Glechoma hirsuta is a small herbaceous perennial with delicate labial flowers in the Lamiaceae family.
The height of these plants varies from 10 to 50 cm (maximum 100 cm).
La Tortue peinte (Chrysemys picta) vit dans les points d'eau stagnante, du sud du Canada à la Louisiane et le Nord du Mexique, et de l'Atlantique au Pacifique. Des fossiles prouvent son existence depuis au moins 15 millions d'années.

¨¨Le dessus de la tête du
« diploderma splendidum » [Japalura splendid]
est couvert d'écailles moyennes, rugueuses et juxtaposées. Le mâle adulte a une tête brun foncé qui était visiblement marquée de taches et de stries jaunes au-dessus et sur les côtés. De plus, une bande jaune s'étend de derrière la narine, sous l'œil et au-dessus des labiales, jusqu'en dessous de la zone tympanique. Le rostral et les trois labiales antérieures sont jaunes, tandis que les autres sont sombres. Le dos est d'un brun foncé uniforme avec une bande claire large et bien visible de chaque côté et une large zone sombre sous les bandes claires. Le ventre et la queue sont sombres, cette dernière ayant des bandes irrégulières plus foncées. La gorge est visiblement striée longitudinalement de brun sur fond jaune. Principalement insectivore, , cette espèce peut parfois être herbivore.
Il est originaire des jungles tempérées mais humides des basses terres entourant le fleuve Yangtze dans le sud-ouest de la Chine.

This delightful little dark-spotted palthis looks like a spacecraft that was designed to fight the dark side in a Star Wars movie. This female has long tufted labial palps that make her look like Pinocchio. Once she lays her eggs, dark-spotted palthis caterpillars are not fussy and will feed on ash and maple tree leaves along with aster and goldenrod flower leaves.
In a short burst of Autumnal Light from a Sun low over the Meuse River, these White-footed Furrow Bees were seen foraging for the last of the nectar on Tansy, Tanacetum vulgare. Poisononous for cattle and humans alike, that flower provides nourishment to many insects.
Lots of wild bees are solitary, but this Lasioglossum is eusocial. I don't know how large its colonies might be, but studies say they may be as small as 4 or 5 bees. In any case, three of them are here, partaking of Sweetness.
Amazing 'tongues'... I'd have liked to also show you the labial palpi - amazing in themselves - but my photo wasn't clear enough for that so I inset one instead in which they're hidden by Yellow Flower. Some other time.

Ohne Rouge auf meinen Lippen und eine leichte Korrektur meiner Augenbrauen gehe ich nicht aus dem Haus, einige kleine Spritzer Parfüm, e voila, fertig!. Nun kann der Tag beginnen.

En cliquant vous pouvez constater qu'il a bien son antenne de droite mais que celle-ci est dans l'axe de visée: on ne distingue que la massue, floue car trop proche. Le bord de l'aile antérieure gauche vibre et les ailes de droite s'incurvent sous l'effet du mistral.
Ce lépidoptère, avec ses gros yeux exorbités, ses palpes labiaux et, transposé à l'homme, un aspect plutôt ahuri, me fait penser à des personnages de Franquin, en particulier à la copine de Gaston, Mademoiselle Jeanne (gros yeux: lunettes, palpes labiaux: nez retroussé, etc...)

A cute and docile slug snake by the trail. We set it on a nearby branch and took a few shots. Found this specimen during a night walk/herp in the highlands of Pahang, Malaysia. Two herpers from US joined us that night.
Toxicity: Mildly venomous but no medical significance record on human in Malaysia)
Diet: Snails and slugs. Like all slug snakes, this species has a unique and specialized teeth that allows it to corkscrew the flesh of the snails.
Behavior: Active but non-aggressive.
First described in 2013 by Loredo, Wood, Quah, Anuar, Greer, Ahmad, & Grismer, the Mirkwood Forest Slug Snake (Asthenodipsas lasgalensis) is a close relative of the Mountain Slug Snake (Asthenodipsas vertebralis), with which it was formerly confused.
The most obvious difference between the two species is only apparent in adults: while both species are brownish in colour, adult Asthenodipsas lasgalensis lose the dark banding which is present in juveniles, and which is particularly evident on the lower flanks of Asthenodipsas vertebralis throughout life.
In addition, the venter and labial (lip) scales of the former are white, and in the latter are yellow. The presence or absence of a vertebral stripe also varies between the species, although this feature is less obvious in the field. Finally, it spotted dark red to red-orange eyes.
Etymology: The specific epithet lasgalenensis is derived from the name Eryn Lasgalen which means in the “Wood of Greenleaves” in the fictional Sindarian language from J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1955). It was the name used by the Wood Elves for the Mirkwood Forest after its cleansing following the War of the Ring. This name was chosen because Tolkien’s (1955) description of this forest showed great similarity to the cloudy, upland forests within which this species is found.
In this shot the tongue is clearly visible - it is a complex structure associated with maxillary and labial palps, one of which can be seen here too.
Megalodon (Otodus megalodon), meaning "big tooth", is an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago (Mya), from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. It was formerly thought to be a member of the family Lamnidae and a close relative of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). However, it is now classified into the extinct family Otodontidae, which diverged from the great white shark during the Early Cretaceous. While regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived, the megalodon is only known from fragmentary remains, and its appearance and maximum size are uncertain. Scientists differ on whether it would have more closely resembled a stockier version of the great white shark, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) or the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus).

The most recent estimate with the least error range suggests a maximum length estimate up to 20 m, although the modal lengths are estimated at 10.5 m. Estimates suggest that a megalodon about 16 m long weighs up to 48 MT, 17 m long weighs up to 59 MT, and 20.3 m long (the maximum length) weighs up to 103 MT. Their teeth were thick and robust, built for grabbing prey and breaking bone, and their large jaws could exert a bite force of up to 108,500 to. Megalodon probably had a major impact on the structure of marine communities. The fossil record indicates that it had a cosmopolitan distribution. It probably targeted large prey, such as whales, seals and sea turtles. Juveniles inhabited warm coastal waters and fed on fish and small whales. Unlike the great white, which attacks prey from the soft underside, megalodon probably used its strong jaws to break through the chest cavity and puncture the heart and lungs of its prey. The animal faced competition from whale-eating cetaceans, such as Livyatan and other macroraptorial sperm whales and possibly smaller ancestral killer whales. As the shark preferred warmer waters, it is thought that oceanic cooling associated with the onset of the ice ages, coupled with the lowering of sea levels and resulting loss of suitable nursery areas, may have also contributed to its decline. A reduction in the diversity of baleen whales and a shift in their distribution toward polar regions may have reduced megalodon's primary food source. The shark's extinction coincides with a gigantism trend in baleen whales.
Megalodon teeth are similar in shape but larger and broader than the teeth of the modern great white shark. Teeth are triangular, broad at the base, and thin toward the peak, like a chisel or wedge, although sometimes they curve toward the cusp. Teeth have a root, which has a V-shaped notch at its base, and an enamel-covered crown. The root has a rough, porous, bone-like texture, whereas the enamel is smooth and polished, but sometimes broken by vertical cracks. The outward-facing (lingual) side of the tooth bulges outward. The inward-facing (labial) side of the tooth is generally flat to slightly curved. The border between the crown and root on the lingual side of the tooth is marked by a chevron-shaped feature called the bourlette or dental band. The edges of the teeth are serrated like steak knives.

A lavadeira-mascarada (Fluvicola nengeta), também conhecida como lavadeira, noivinha, viuvinha (Zona da Mata Mineira), maria-branca, maria-lencinho, bertolinha ou pombinho-das-almas e senhorinha, é uma ave passeriforme sul-americana pertencente a família dos tiranídeos. Em alguns lugares no Nordeste também é conhecida pelo nome de Lavadeira-de-Deus e Andorinha(Ceará).
Nome Científico:
Seu nome científico significa: do (latim) fluvius, fluvii = rio; e do (tupy) nheengetá = pássaro sussurrando. ⇒ Pássaro ribeirinho que sussurra.
Características:
Mede Entre 14,5 e 16 centímetros de comprimento e pesa de 14-20 gramas.
Sua coloração é principalmente branca contrastando com uma estreita faixa transocular preta que termina em uma leve curvatura para baixo logo após região auricular. A testa, coroa e nuca são brancas. O manto apresenta coloração clara levemente castanho-acinzentado. As asas apresentam coloração escura com tons castanho-acinzentado mais escuros que o manto. O uropígio e as penas supracaudais são brancas. A cauda é preta e apresenta a porção distal com manchas brancas. A garganta, peito, ventre, crisso e infracaudais são brancos.
O bico é curto fino e preto. Tarsos e pés são pretos. A íris também é preta.
Os jovens da espécie são similares aos adultos e apresentam uma leve comissura labial de coloração amarelo pálido.
Subespécies
Possui duas subespécies:
Fluvicola nengeta nengeta (Linnaeus, 1766) - ocorre no Leste do Brasil, do estado do Maranhão até o estado de Minas Gerais e no Nordeste do estado de São Paulo;
Fluvicola nengeta atripennis (P. L. Sclater, 1860) - ocorre do Sudoeste do Equador até o Noroeste do Peru na região de Tumbes. Esta subespécie apresenta a coloração das asas mais pretas que a subespécie nominal com as penas de voo situadas no segmento basal da asa de cor branca com franjas (Ridgely, 1989). (Clements checklist, 2014).
Distribuição Geográfica:
A distribuição desta ave é curiosa, pois existem duas populações muito distantes, uma no leste brasileiro e outra no noroeste da América do Sul. A população brasileira, antigamente restrita a açudes e rios no Sertão e Agreste da região Nordeste, está em expansão. A Mata Atlântica, que aparentemente representava uma barreira natural para esta espécie, foi perdendo espaço para pastagens e culturas que se assemelham mais ao semi-árido do que à floresta umbrófila, possibilitando assim a expansão desta espécie. Outras explicações envolvem o aumento no número de rios represados na região Sudeste e mudanças climáticas. O fato é que esta simpática ave está sendo registrada cada dia mais ao sul. Na década de 90 foram feitos os primeiros registros da espécie no interior de São Paulo e hoje em dia já são registradas aves se reproduzindo em Santa Catarina.

(It's rare that you can see a fly's "trunk"/"tongue" this well - labium, maxillary palpus, labrum and labial palpi.) This individual appears to be infected with a pathogenic fungus (possibly Entomophthora sp.), and I'm not even sure if this was the fly or the fungus reacting! I'm guessing this fly will eventually look just like this.

Paeonia lactiflora
This is only my 2nd broadhead & my first female. Females don't have that big ol red head like the males. She was partially out of her hiding place on a rotten log in the woods. Enjoying the sun. I was fortunate enough to spot her from a distance & get a couple of shots before she spotted me. Ran the photos past a reptile expert because although I know you count the labial scales to make the id tween broadhead & 5-lined skinks, I have a hard time telling where those labial scales start & stop.
