May 31, 2023 - Canada has created a brand new Cabinet position called Minister of health and Addictions and Carolyn Bennett has started off her new position with yet another attack on the tobacco industry by ordering that 50 additional new dire warning messages ( 25 in French and 25 in English) be placed on or within the cigarette packages that are already overcrowded by numerous dire warnings and graphic pictures ? This is interesting ? First they assist alcohol products by giving them a generous 4 times the sin tax break over the tobacco products, then they create legislation to legalize and to enable the smoking of cannabis, and, then they create more legislation enacting Bill C-218 to open up the flood gates of wide open at home and mobile phone sports parlor betting and casino gambling as never before seen or even imagined in Canada - And then, after all of this enabling assistance, they will then proceed to create a brand new Cabinet position called Minister of mental health and addictions, and her first order of business when assuming her new job is to once again target and single out tobacco products for yet another restriction ? ( while ignoring and not even mentioning the words sports gambling, marijuana or alcohol) ?

The Province of Nova Scotia publishes an official yearly Government financial statement showing tax revenue collected from all provincial sales of major sin taxed legal adult recreational products. The sin products they list are : alcohol ( NSLC sales ), tobacco, gambling (Atlantic lotto/casino), and now Cannabis (NSLC ) ? According to the numbers stated, and based on total number of products purchased, smokers appear to be paying 4 dollars tax into the coffers for every 1 tax dollar that the drinkers are paying in ? Listen as Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.'s Chief Public Health Officer has blamed smoking for the current problems in her troubled health care system and for the long wait times at Emergency ? She goes on to suggest that in order to contain this threat that a drastic solution is necessary and is suggesting that constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed under a Constitution be removed from some citizens for the rest of their lives in order to protect PEI citizens ?
It is unfortunate here, that the Minister seems oblivious to and never mentions in the interview the real reasons for the current health care crisis that has not so much been caused by smokers but by an incredible lack of planning and foresight by her predecessors who had for years cut staff and slashed hospital budgets to the bone. There is also a surprisingly large influx of newcomers and foreigners incl students now moving unimpeded by Government into a small and unprepared Province creating shortages of Doctors and Nurses. And, what about the huge drain on the health system caused by the abuse of alcohol, social media abuse, gambling addictions, cannabis abuse, opioid and fentanyl hard drug use, mental illness and depression. And we mustn't forget all of those suffering from obesity, sugar diabetes, poor diet choices, lack of exercise and from the effects of overdoing fast food and junk food. There is also the victims of violence, be it domestic or other, and the increase in accidents caused by pot and alcohol impairment. And, we must also remember the ever growing number of elderly residents in our society needing attention and now living longer. And not to forget the hundreds of everyday visitors to the hospital suffering from the common everyday illnesses like colds, flu, cuts and bruises and Covi, as well as all of the soon to be Mothers requiring immediate attention or treatment ?

Newfoundland, June 3, 2024 - A proposal has been put forth to Newfoundlanders that as a way to get rid of a product that some people in Newfoundland don't approve of, that the Provincial Government be given permission to interrupt and override the current system of democracy and to deny longtime constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed under a Charter to certain young Newfoundlanders without gaining their knowledge, attention, permission or consent ? Apparently under the new proposal the local Governance will be allowed to choose and pinpoint a particular publicly sold product and then force an absolute lifetime ban on this product on whomever they have chosen ? A lifetime probationary condition is to then remain permanently attached to these subjects for as long as they live ?
