This came out of a watercolour painting week I spent up in Eskdale in the late 90's. It was residential and we went out drawing every morning then came back and painted from our drawings in the afternoons ( in a shivery cold converted cowshed with bare light bulbs dangling above each work space!!..wonderful food though!)
This was an approach I'd never tried before..no colour reference..no photos taken...I just scribbled the odd note on my sketch. Quite liberating. It was on another that same Summer that I'd aquired my palette knife technique and had begun to use it in earnest now, loving the pure metallic lines and arcs it made. I enjoyed playing with the overlays and colours on the tiny stone building to the left..having no colour restraints I just went where the mood took me..... This painting and others turned up this week in the loft. There'd been a leak ( we've just had the roof re-tiled) and I went up to investigate. Rain had been coming in just by them..floor damp and backing on works was discoloured. Brought them all down and to safety..kwikstix..so they'll be others to follow. How lucky!!!
