Happy Kwanzaa...Happy New Year....

..the first yard decorations for Kwanzaa I've ever noticed. In keeping with creating/using handmade objects in the celebration, these Kwanzaa "candles" are wonderful examples of such work.

Kwanzaa, a seven day long celebration for all people of African descent, was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga. It was created to reaffirm the culture, heritage, values and bonds that hold African Americans together as a people.

Kwanza means "first fruit" in Swahili. An extra "a" was added to the word in the name of the holiday, Kwanzaa, and in this way it has one letter for each of the 7 days of the celebration, December 26 to January 1.

I wanted to post something kind of Christmassy. Practically the entire country has gotten pounded with snow in the past week and I keep seeing these beautiful snow photos on flickr. I can't believe Christmas is really only a few days away. It just doesn't feel like the holidays when I'm in Mesa Arizona and it's 70 degrees outside. Somehow a big Saguaro Cactus wrapped with lights just doesn't feel like the holiday season to me.

So, anyway, this was taken a couple months ago in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This was up near the Santa Fe ski area, up over 10,000 feet elevation.

So… Happy Holidays everyone, and to my Canadian friends… Happy Holidays, eh.

before a funeral. yeah, she didn't take it that hard.

He even got the apple pie filling! Good times!

Angervo is a Barbie Kwanzaa head, now on integrity toys 'Shana Elmsford' body. Her name means 'meadowsweet' in Finnish. I should make some clothes for her, but she looks so fine without.

Angie is wearing Final Cut Isha's fabulous dress, which I've been wanting for a long long time! I have a thing for green silk and red underskirts..

The doll is Kwanzaa Barbie on Integrity Jem & the Holograms body.

Kwanzaa is a uniquely African-American holiday that celebrates African values of family and community. Kwanzaa means the "first fruits of the harvest" and the festival is rapidly spreading throughout the world! Kwanzaa Barbie® doll wears a beautiful outfit with an African inspired motif on the borders of her tunic style top, long skirt and headscarf. Beading on her belt, necklace and earrings add the final touch.

I like the brown Minnie Mouse pumps with the overall look.
