The Peterhof Palace (Петерго́ф in Russian, German for Peter's Court) is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, laid out on the orders of Peter the Great. These palaces and gardens are sometimes referred as the "Russian Versailles." The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We walked hand in hand along the well-trodden path. It was so cold our frozen breath was left hanging in the air. We could still hear the sound of the huskies who were now many miles away. Upon our arrival our hosts were waiting for us with tankards of the local kvass, a yeasty beer of the region. We sipped the warm liquid and walked over to the center of the cabin where the nuptial mask had been rotated into the permafrost. We knelt down on the reindeer hide and rested our faces into the mask before releasing the spittle that had begun to fill our mouths.
As our hosts broke in to song, we knew we had completed the last of our vows with the most intimate of rituals. We had become one of the many thousands of newlyweds to commit our bodily fluids (along with our genetic traces) to the cryogenic safe of the Siberian permafrost; a symbol of our commitment to each other.
The first beer barrels were filled by HBH “Juozo" beer brewery on 1st of May, 1995, in small village Žibininkai. A bar with three tables, containing only 18 people, was equipped near brewery for beer lovers. Thus, five members of Matulevičiai family, i.e., Rada, Juozas, Aida, Laura and Matas, succeeded to do everything: to brew beer, to prepare tasty food, to service the visitors and to chat with them. The popularity of bar had grown.
•During summer season we will find You a place in one of 5 buildings for guests. There are 4 kitchens and 6 bars. What is more, there is a pub of draft drinks and souvenirs and cafe with candy shop;
•We can welcome the following number of guests: in the main building (in eight halls) – 509, Arbour – 112; Boat House – 168; Barbeque Bar – 278; at all outdoor tables – 360; in balconies – 73;
•We employ about 200 persons during summer, and about 100 employees during other seasons;
•There are parking sites, containing approximately 400 cars;
•There have been that You, our dear ones, ate 2 438 zeppelins, drank 2 tonnes of beer and 1 tonne of kvass per day. Enjoy ...

This is Karlsson-on-the-Roof by Astrid Lindgren -- widely known in Russia and ignored in the West. I'm pretty sure I took it from a book illustration.

Mina Demian, pictured here at thirteen months, was born at forty-one weeks with the help of a midwife. She weighed in at seven pounds and six ounces. Before and during her pregnancy, mom enjoyed the benefits of raw milk, straight from Michael Schmidt's farm which could easily be reached from Toronto. Mom also ate a lot of raw eggs and homemade butter, kefir and yogurt, lots of broth with gelatin, bone marrow and fermented goodies like sauerkraut and kvass. Her daily diet before and during her pregnancy also included spirulina and chlorella powder on a daily basis. Due to a stressful period after her birth, mom was not able to breast-feed her, so Mina grew nicely on the WAPF formula and was very early put on cod liver oil with fermented butter. She also ate with no problems the daily egg yolks mixed with her favorite food, avocado. She is extremely observant, smart and extremely social. She is loving with everybody.
This was a really busy little thoroughfare (I sat with a kvass and read my book here for a while) - lots of 'test your strength' machines and other excitements further up, and people promenading in the sunshine generally.

A very usual sight, and delicious too! I had several ones during the trip, a malted drink with a slight bitter taste.
Kvas is a fermented beverage made from bread. it is still popular in Russia and former Soviet states.
I must have drunk about 5 or 6 0.5L measures of kvass that afternoon - it was very hot, and the kvass was both cool and refreshingly sugary. It has a slightly yeasty taste, so perhaps I thought it was like beer or shandy - in fact, there is minimal alcohol content.

Borscht.
Warm enough, that cold soups are tasting good. Fresh beets, shallot, dill, and leek were all available at the farmers market this morning and I have been wanting to make this for some time. This is the first time I have made borscht with Kvass. I learned of this from nikenamemiket and it truly made this so much better. Barley and bread like flavor really balances the sweet beet. Finished with hard cooked egg and dill, sour cream, and chopped cucumber.

Shchi is a Russian soup with cabbage as the primary ingredient.
