The sun barely appears over the horizon. Lovely pastel coloured light over fields and farms.

First came the cold - and then the snow.....

Trying out my new macro lens.

Just happened to be snowing as well. Why not combine the two :-)

Silent architecture of winter — where frost weaves its frozen cathedral.

Winter equinox and low winter sun making an intensely coloured tangential arc in contact with a sun halo. Cold air inversion and lots of ice crystals in the air allow for unusual optic phenomena in the sky.

One of two Eurasian penduline tits (Remiz pendulinus) that visited Jæren two months ago.

They are rare visitors in Norway, and it was my first time seeing them here.

But I had seen and taken much better photos of them in Greece 1.5 years earlier, so I didn't mind that we had to keep our distance to avoid disturbing them in the cold.

(Pungmeis in Norwegian)

Today, I met another rare visitor for the very first time - the very cool Eurasian bittern (rørdrum in Norwegian), fishing between a brook and an icy lake in Stavanger.

At first, it was hidden behind the reeds - but after some waiting in the cold, it suddenly came walking towards and by us, up the brook along the path. An awesome experience! I hope it will cope with the cold, but I fear it will die like other visiting bitterns have done before.

On my way up there, I also got a call from the radio. They want to have a live interview about my birdwatching interest tomorrow morning ツ

Check out some photos of the other penduline tit in the links below the line!

A winter's day in Bergen, Norway.

A haze of smog in the city caused by temperature inversion. This is a typical phenomenon in cold, clear and windless winter days where a warmer layer of air closes off normal wind circulation, trapping the exhaust from traffic and wood-burning stoves (additional source for heating for many on cold winter days) between the so-called "seven mountains" surrounding the city center.
