Het spoorwegstation Rotterdam Stadion - geopend in 1937 - wordt normaliter alleen gebruikt bij voetbalwedstrijden en evenementen in De Kuip. In het weekend van 24-25 juni 2023 eindigden hier echter de reguliere treinen uit het zuiden in verband met werkzaamheden te Rotterdam Centraal. Nu de toegangshekken geopend waren was dit een mooie gelegenheid hier de infra vast te leggen.
Zeer klassiek (en vermoedelljk uniek) is de treinaanwijzer met de verlichte neonletters van de sporen 'SP 3A', 'SP 4A’ en bestemming 'Dordrecht'. De bediening hiervan gebeurt vanuit het duiventil-achtige verblijf op de loopbrug. Overdag brandden meerdere bestemmingen naar het zuiden maar ik was blij dat bij zonsondergang niet alles al uitgeschakeld was.

However, on the weekend of 24-25 June 2023, trains from the south ended here due to works at Rotterdam Central. This was a great opportunity to capture the infrastructure here for a change.
Very classic (and presumably unique) is the surviving train indicator with the illuminated neon letters of the tracks 'SP 3A', 'SP 4A' and destination 'Dordrecht'. During the day, several other destinations to the south were manually lit but I was glad that by sunset not everything was already switched off.

De in/uitgang is wel voorzien van OV-in/uitcheckpaaltjes (met grote borden erbij om het nog wat ingewikkelder te maken) maar verder oogt dit vooral .... oud en kaal (maar hufterproof). De ronding in de doorloophekken zal in het verleden de plaats zijn geweest voor de kaartjescontroleurs. Op de achtergrond (midden-links) de voetgangersbrug (in de volksmond: ‘de loopgoot’) voor een afgeschermde route tussen het treinstation en De Kuip. Mochten alle plannen van 'Rotterdam Stadionpark' doorgaan dan gaat hier in de toekomst veel veranderen en wordt deze tijdelijke halte een volwaardig treinstation.

The entrance/exit does have check-in/out-facilities (with yellow signs attached to make it a bit more complicated) but otherwise this looks mostly .... old and bare (but lumber-proof). Should all the plans of 'Rotterdam Stadionpark' go ahead, much will change here in the future and this temporary stop will become a full-fledged train station.

Within 250 metres you have dozens of Romanesque and Gothic-style buildings, and others from later times to the very early 20th century.
De Stadsmolen te Axel werd in 1911 onttakeld. De molen, gebouwd in 1750 op het bolwerk Vlissingen, fungeerde sindsdien als maalderij met twee koppel stenen op de begane grond. Eind jaren zeventig ontstonden er plannen om de molen in oude glorie te herstellen. In 1985 vond een bouwhistorisch onderzoek plaats waarna een restauratiebestek werd opgesteld. In 1990 werd de romp - dus niet de molen - op de rijksmonumentenlijst geplaatst. In 1997 wordt Stichting Exploistatie De Axelse Molen eigenaar van de molen en aan het eind van dat jaar wordt begonnen aan de restauratie. Belangrijk onderdeel van de restauratie was de aanleg van een betonnen ring onder en rond de voet van de molen om de fundering te versterken. De molen had namelijk last van scheurvorming in de romp en door de wapening in de ring kan het molenlijf niet meer ‘werken’ en kunnen de scheuren beter worden hersteld.
Nadat het metselwerk was hersteld, werden een nieuwe kap, een nieuwe staart, een nieuw wiekenkruis en een nieuwe stelling aangebracht. Aansluitend kreeg het werktuig onder meer een kuip en rolvloer. De molen is volledig maalvaardig opgeleverd en heeft twee koppel zeventiender stenen. De molen werd op 16 juni 2001 geopend door J.F. Mulder, burgemeester van Axel en W.J. de Groot, voorzitter van de Stichting Exploistatie De Axelse Molen.
De molen is een officiële trouwlocatie van de gemeente Axel.

Opweg van De Kuip in Rotterdam naar het Amsterdamse Centraal station passeert de 1756 met een sleep van maarliefst zestien rijtuigen station Haarlem Spaarnwoude. In Amsterdam mochten de mensen die 3650 euro over hadden voor een ticket instappen voor een brunch, tijdens deze brunch maakte de trein nog een rondritje door Nederland om aan het einde van de middag om 18.11 naar Venetië te vertrekken. 05 november 2010.
Terwijl in de Kuip ,op de achtergrond, de wedstrijd Nederland tegen Luxemburg bijna van start gaat, komt DBC 1615 met trein 61063 door Rotterdam Zuid naar Amsterdam Westhaven.
Opvallend was dat achterop een keteldeel meereed voor Onnen.

This level is used by the municipality of Rotterdam (22.000 square meters, max capacity of 1800 of civil servants) and the Museum Rotterdam.
Grandmaster Rem isn’t well known for his keen sense of humour, but the team of interior designers (led by Saskia Simon and Katrien van Dijk) seems to be a little different., when one considers ’the elephant in the room’ here. and this pic too, captured in one of the bigger meeting rooms of the Timmerhuis, with a picture-carpet of the Feijenoord soccer stadium (De Kuip) in full swing.
This decoration seems to illustrate the saying that collective decision making is an arena (the 'policy arena'). With players, rules and ‘supporters’, cheering the proceedings on. A more ironic reading of the decoration is that it might be a referral to the 'bread and circuses' adagio, stating that the masses can be pacified by the administrative elite by offering them 'bread and circuses' ;-)

Feyenoord legend Wim Jansen passed away today at the age of 75.
As a player he won the Europa Cup 1 (now Champions League) in 1970, the Intercontinental Cup (now World Cup for clubs) in 1970, UEFA Cup (now Europa League) in 1974 and the national title multiple times around the same period. Two World Cup finals in '74 (West-Germany) and '78 (Argentina).
I haven't seen him play live, that was before my time, but I have seen him as a coach. At the end of the 80's, beginning of the 90's Feyenoord was is really bad shape. They were on the edge of bankruptcy and my dad took us took the stadium and we lost almost every game. Some 10.000 spectators, a big almost empty stadium. I can remember one game against Fortuna, we were behind 0-2 and the fans stormed the field. Individually decent players but they didn't function as a team, there was zero confidence.
Halfway the '90-'91 season we were at the bottom of the table and the humble Wim Jansen took over as the manager. The team became more balanced, didn't concede a lot of goals and confidence grew game-by-game and started winning. They managed to win the cup and that changed everything. In that period Wim Jansen saved the club from going belly up.

When I was a kid, my dad took my brother and me to the stadium to watch Feyenoord for many years. This was in the 80s-90s. This was is the old stadium, de oude Kuip, with the brown seats. Feyenoord wasn't doing so well at that time. No money, little talent and 10-15.000 spectators in each game. You could park your car next to the stadium, in the mud, for free.
But I loved that my dad took us there. We got the love for the game there and then. Today my dad and me went to the game again. I loved it. These are good times.

The final act of the Opera at last brought the audience from the catacombs of the stadium to the stands. What a place (it was my first visit to De Kuip). Of course I captured the big ‘Zusjes van Wanrooy’ accordeon orchestra, they played an important part in bridging the soccer and opera culture. And they spotted me (there were very few people using non-cellularphone cameras) and the leadsister smiled radiantly.

The final act of the Opera at last brought the audience from the catacombs of the stadium to the stands. Captured here is a part of the cast of the stage play that was intertwined with the opera.
At the end of the act they are thanking the public for its very enthusiast applause and are singing with them. Present are the young lead character (modeled on former Feijenoord star Robin van Persie) - and his stage grandparents. In the background is one of the stadium guides. The guides are members of the inner circle of the supporters group of Feijenoord and they saw to it that the audience didn't get lost in the stadium. The message on her banner is not as ominous as you might think , the word 'alone' is missing in this capture ;-) It reads 'You'll never walk alone, one of Feijenoord's club anthems. The song that's being sung here. And was the mission of the guides ;-)

Door de vrieskou is de lucht helder en kun je ook in de stad genieten van wijdse uitzichten. We kijken over de huizen van Katendrecht heen en zien een driewagencombinatie van de Rotterdamse metro op weg tussen de stations Maashaven en Rijnhaven. Er is nog net een glimp van het water van de Maashaven te zien. Op de achtergrond domineert De Kuip, het stadion van Feijenoord, de skyline van de stad.

- In the direct vicinity of my pond (3x7m) I have a mini pond, a digged-in mortar bucket (diameter 55cm, depth 35cm). Here live some salamanders and frogs, who don't like all the excitement of the fish in the big pond.
Here I grow also a miniature water lily:
- Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Rubra'
This miniature lily performs particularly well in tub gardens. It produces may-september masses of flowers which are a rich pink while the plant is young, but deepen to almost red as it matures. The diameter of the flower is hardly 5 centimeters.

- Direct naast mijn vijver (3x7m) heb ik een mini vijver, bestaand uit een ingegraven plastic specie kuip (diameter 55cm, diepte 35cm). Hier leven een aantal slamanders en kikkers die niet zo van de drukte van de vissen in de grote vijver houden.
Hier groeit ook een miniatuur waterlelie:

Deze waterlelie bloeit van mei tot september, met kleine, licht geurende, rozerode bloemen, met een goudgeel hartje, de diameter van de bloem is amper 5 cm.
Deze waterlelie houdt van een standplaats in volle zon en een waterdiepte van 15 tot 40 cm. De plant is zeer goed winterhard, lokt vlinders, bijen en andere insecten,

In het kader van de vorige foto, zoemen we even in op Voetbalstadion ‘De Kuip’ van de Rotterdamse voetbalclub Feyenoord. Want na vele jaren van plannen maken en vergaderen krijgt Feyenoord definitief een nieuw stadion. Tussen 2006 en 2013 waren de gemeente Rotterdam en Feyenoord onder de werknaam Nieuwe Kuip bezig met plannen maken voor een nieuw stadion, dat uiterlijk in 2018 had moeten verrijzen. Omdat het huidige stadion onvoldoende ruimte biedt om Feyenoord verder te laten groeien, werd er gewerkt aan plannen voor een stadion met 63.000 plaatsen. Het stadion moest verrijzen op Sportcomplex Varkenoord, vlak bij het bestaande stadion. Men had daarbij de intentie om het huidige Stadion Feyenoord, dat op de monumentenlijst staat, een nieuwe functie te geven. Op 10 juli 2013, toen er in de gemeenteraad geen meerderheid te vinden bleek voor een garantstelling, werd duidelijk dat er geen nieuwe Kuip zou komen. Op 1 mei 2014 werd besloten de bestaande Kuip grondig te verbouwen, waardoor het met 70.000 zitplaatsen het grootste stadion van Nederland zou worden. De kosten vielen evenwel veel hoger uit dan verwacht. Begin maart 2015 bleek dat de diverse betrokken partijen, waaronder de eigenaars van het stadion en enkele aannemers, geen voor alle partijen acceptabele oplossing konden vinden. De onderhandelingen werden daarop gestaakt. De 'vernieuwbouw' was daarmee van de baan. Op 18 maart 2016 werd bekendgemaakt dat Feyenoord de voorkeur geeft aan een nieuwe locatie langs de Maas, ter hoogte van de woonwijk De Veranda. Hier zou een nieuw complex, Feyenoord City, gebouwd moeten worden, met onder meer een stadion, winkels en woningen. De Kuip zou een andere bestemming moeten krijgen. Op 11 mei 2017 heeft de gemeente Rotterdam ingestemd met een nieuw stadion voor Feyenoord en op 21 december 2018 stemde ook de club Feyenoord en Stadion Feijenoord definitief in met de bouw van het nieuwe stadion aan de Nieuwe Maas. Er wordt totaal 365 miljoen euro (waarvan 135 miljoen euro door de gemeente) uitgetrokken voor de bouw van een nieuw stadion en de realisatie van omliggende woon- en uitgaansgelegenheden. Het nieuwe stadion zal een capaciteit van circa 65.000 toeschouwers krijgen. De bouw van ‘Het’ stadion van Rotterdam gaat echter wel gevolgen hebben voor deze fotostek omdat deze deels over de spoorlijn Rotterdam-Dordrecht gebouwd wordt. Zoals het er nu naar uitziet zou de bouw van de ‘Nieuwe Kuip’ deze zomer moeten beginnen en in de zomer van 2023 klaar zijn. Voorlopig is van deze grootschalige
werkzaamheden op deze locatie nog niets te zien, wanneer Metrans locomotief 386 036 met de goed beladen Praag-shuttle 43304 (Bh-Whz) de enige fotograaf te Rotterdam Zuid passeert richting de Waalhaven.

It is the home stadium of football club Feyenoord, one of the traditional top teams in the Netherlands. It has also long been one of the home grounds of the Dutch national team, having hosted over 150 international matches, with the first one being a match against Belgium on 2 May 1937. Also, a record ten European finals have taken place in the Feijenoord stadium. The last one was the 2002 UEFA Cup Final in which Feyenoord, coincidentally playing a home match, defeated Borussia Dortmund 3–2.
In 2000, the Feijenoord stadium hosted the final of Euro 2000, played in the Netherlands and Belgium, where France defeated Italy 2–1 in extra time

Last year I posted some 'Feijnoord De Opera' shots, went on holiday and forgot about it. Well, it's time to post some new pics from this fascinating event.
This one is shot at the 'Legioenzaal' the place were the supporters of Feijenoord meet. The libretto brought the audience here to infuse the proceedings with some supporters shock-and-awe. Apart from the act that was played out there was also a flag waving event performed by supporters themselves accompanied with very loud techno-house music. In the background is the Ropera Choir, also featured here.
The combination of soccer and opera, the event was highly enjoyable. And the functionalist archi setting of De Kuip (Brinkman & vander Vlught 1936) made it extra special. The steel skeleton and the glass facade is clearly in view.

It's an opera production that took place two summers ago. Ah, but but what has soccer to do with opera? Well, both the roots are working class but soon the social practices and audiences diverged.
The Rotterdam Wijktheater and the Walhalla theater brought them together again. And they did this in a clever way. Classic opera tunes from Aïda, Norma, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Orpheus & Euredice, Die Mutter, the Barber of Seville, Il travatore & Nabucco got new Dutch lyrics â¦.they formed a classic Rotterdam soccer narration about a boy called Robin. The narration loosely follows the first soccer years of former Fijenoord player Robin van Persie. The plot is helped along by two inter-spaced mini stageplays. The second bridging device is the orchestra - the accordion orchestra of the 'Zusjes van Wanrooy'. Together with the program booklet with the lyrics included it stimulated / enabled the public to sing a long, in the best tradition of participatory and community / empowerment theater- the core business of the Rotterdam Wijktheater.
