It took us 10 hours to get home yesterday due to heavy snow where we work in Epsom. The whole campus was shut and everyone sent home early in order to make it home safely through what was then six inches of snow. Nobody in this country has snow tires, nobody knows how to drive in snow and the area we were trying to get through was particularly treacherous with it's hilly and impassable country lanes that were covered in ice and snow.

 

At first we thought it best to avoid the small roads and stick to the busier routes which had at least been gritted. That was a big mistake as everybody had done the same and the only route out of town was completely blocked 4 miles away by what we found out was a jack knifed lorry. We were able to move a total of about 100 meters in 3 hours!

 

At this point we decided to change tack and take our chances on the country roads after all in an attempt to get to the other major road out. We had at least two people on-line for us via mobile phone, checking the conditions on the internet and sorting a place to stay nearby if we got stranded. By this time it was getting dark and we were driving into the frozen abyss... not another car in sight.

 

Then we started to see the evidence of carnage. Cars abandoned in the road, off to the side, sideways, and a queue of taillights in the snowy distance... time to test our brakes. The cars were lined up to attempt a run up a short incline one at a time. We could see a van up ahead with it's tires spinning, sliding back and forth, it was clear the driver didn't know to steer into the direction of the slide.

 

This was a time of comaraderie, altruism, heroism as local people stepped out of the dark with gloves and boots on, ready to push. And, by gosh, they got everyone up that hill. From that point on we were flying, driving slowly and carefully, navigating our way on the flattest route towards the only other road that would take us to... the M25.

 

We stopped for fuel and a pee break at a tiny petrol station as we passed through a nearby village. We also got more water and several bags of chips (crisps). The man working the station was worried about how he was going to get home that night and retold tales of others also stranded in the marathon queues. He showed us where we could duck behind the bins around the side for a quick pee and bid us farewell.

 

Have I said that we had some serious provisions with us? Between the four of us we had: water, doughnuts, chocolate digestives, mini snickers bars, chips, quiche, wine, cigarettes (the latter two not for the pregnant driver) as well as our wits, optimism and good humour. At one point, earlier in our journey the traffic was stood still opposite a shopping centre with grocery store and starbucks etc. So we took it in turns jumping out and stocking up. So we felt pretty good about being prepared.

 

Good thing cause the worst was yet to come. The next 5 hours were to be spent in a massive queue stretching for miles of mostly single people in cars all trying to make it onto the major ring road artery that circles London, the M25. We knew it was bad... but we didn't know just how bad.

  

Of course we were armed with optimism that most of these people were heading clockwise on the M25 (which we knew was at a standstill) but that a lane would surely move for those heading counter-clockwise... not a chance. When we finally did get through, nearly 5 hours later, the sliproad down towards the counter-clockwise direction was completely snowed over... no one had gone that way at all. And when we reached the huge 3 lane motorway, it was a wasteland. It was like something from a post apocalypse film. Snow covered, shadowy cars sitting empty pointing in all directions on the side of the road. Lorry after lorry parked on the shoulders, dark and cold. It was 11:30pm and we were all silent. Within an hour we were pulling into Brighton.

Photograph settings are SL defaults on Ultra and was taken at Two Moon Gardens using a mid afternoon setting. A prim with a library grass texture was placed underneath the trellis and everything else in the camera view was derendered.
