Inside the ISKCON Krsna Balarama Mandir in Vrindavan women are preparing offerings for the celebration of Janmashtami on 2nd September 2010, the birth of Lord Krishna equivalent to Christmas for the Christians.
In most temples, the Janmashtami celebrations start before dawn and go past midnight, the exact moment of the anniversary of Krishna’s birth – the moment everyone has been waiting for. Devotees sing prayers as a feast of 108 dishes is offered to Krishna for His birthday. Then all the devotees share the birthday feast.

This year’s celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami (Krishna’s appearance day) was a very full day! Out on the back lawn, a Bhagavad Gita yajna was held with SPN residents, community and guests playing the part of pujaris while the Swamis chanted each of its 700 verses, honouring the pure knowledge that Lord Krishna gave to all of us.
Later, Guruji held a lovely sunset satsang in the garden, and then everyone went to the tent to see a play about the life and transformation of Saint Purandara Das. Immediately afterwards, it was time for singing and dancing to energetic bhajans until midnight, then Krishna abhishekam and a beautiful closing satsang by Guruji at 3 am.
The message for this special day is a timeless one: allowing Krishna to be born in our hearts, and to see each of the lilas of Krishna's life as reminders to destroy the negativity of the mind with the power of bhakti, devotion to God. May this day inspire us throughout the year!

This year’s celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami (Krishna’s appearance day) was a rich weekend event, from Friday through Sunday. Course activities included BM Academy's lecture 'Krishna Explained', an art workshop on painting eyes for deities, Sadhana department's talk about diving deeper into your spiritual practice, a Painting Meditation course and an Abhishekam course.
Before the revealing of Baby Krishna in the Temple, a sweet variety of Krishna Leelas were performed as a play by SPN residents and community members, featuring some impressive dancing by Krishna and Shiva together at the Raas!
Then just after midnight and the greatly anticipated appearance of Krishna, Gurudev performed puja to Bala Krishna and His personal deities, and everyone came for offerings, blessings and prasad afterwards. The dancing and singing lasted until 5 am, and then prayers began again at 7 am and continued with a yagna to Krishna. With Gurudev's Satsang in the garden and a procession later in the day, Saturday was made even more special by Gurudev giving a Vishnu Padam blessing and by the darshan of Gurudev's shaligrams in His personal temple, one of which (Panduranga) He gave to the SPN Panduranga Mandir for care by its pujarinis.
Overall, it was a weekend with beautiful late summer weather, clear skies and perfect temperatures, filled with the joy of bhaktas who cherished the Grace of having Krishna in their midst.

On the day of Janmashtami ( celebration of Krishna's birthday), kids here delineate with bricks a space in the street against a wall of their house, cover it with sand and place as many figurines of gods and goddess as they have. they put lights and often install a sort of fountain (symbol of the Yamuna river, I suppose). In the middle of the "Jhanki" they put a cradle with a figurine of Krishna on it, a dish and an oil lamp. Pay one rupee and you can pull the rope and swing Krishna's cradle...I have seen dozen of them in the streets around here in Safdarjung.

As part of the celebration of Krishnajanmastami, a play was presented to Gurudev and guests that highlighted the first 3 of the 12 Alvars, renowned bhakti saints of Tamil Nadu (South India), how they met, and their intense devotion to the Supreme Lord Narayana. This year's play was a rich and intense performance that combined several lilas from Krishna's childhood along with how the first three Alvars experienced God, and how they expressed that through their hymns of devotion.
Mostly narrated by the Alvars themselves, the play combined their beautiful poetry with elegant and powerful Bharatanatyam classical temple dance, allowing the actors to really bring their message of bhakti to life. The Bala Krishnas that were featured were totally charming (just as a Krishna should be), and the serene and powerful presence of Lord Narayana was felt throughout the play, filling the entire room.
At the end, Gurudev said, 'This is not just a play...it is Bhagavan Himself acting to remind everyone of His love through you.'
