Traipsing back to where I'm staying here on Lombok the air was pungent with the smell of drying cloves. Soon I came upon plastic sheets on which the flowers - shaped like nails - were being dessicated. I asked the farmer for the going price: he said about 100,000 idr per kilo. Cloves are much favored here for cigarettes called 'kretek'.
The scenery is quite pretty: among the hills are Bukit Lekotangkot and Bukit Landangluar.
PS Please bear with me; the wifi connection here is quite weak.

Sampoerna/Philip Morris International is the largest Indonesian tobacco company. It produces kretek-type clove cigarettes.
Kretek (pronounced /ˈkriːtɛk/) are cigarettes made with a blend of tobacco, cloves and other flavors. The word "kretek" itself is an onomatopoetic term for the crackling sound of burning cloves. Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. Jamahri believed the eugenol cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died before he could mass market it. M. Nitisemito took his place and began to commercialize the new cigarettes. Today, kretek manufacturers directly employ over 180,000 people in Indonesia and an additional 10 million indirectly.
Partly due to favorable taxation compared to "white" cigarettes, kreteks are by far the most widely-smoked form of cigarettes in Indonesia, where about 90% of smokers usually smoke kreteks (Wikipedia)

kenikmatan kretek juga bisa dilakukan oleh perempuan yang menyukainya. Walaupun beberapa orang masih memandang bahwa perempuan merokok itu dengan pandangan negatif.

In Indonesia, there are hundreds of kretek manufacturers, including small local makers and major brands. Most of the widely-known international brands, including Bentoel, Djarum, Gudang Garam, Jakarta, Sampoerna, Nojorono and Wismilak, originate from Indonesia. Nat Sherman of the United States produces cigarettes branded as "A Touch of Clove" but they are not true kreteks since there is clove flavoring infused into small crystals located inside the filter, rather than actual clove spice mixed with the tobacco.
Rokok. Baik kretek maupun rokok putih. Bahkan cerutu. Bisa dinikmati oleh siapapun. Tak memandang jenis kelamin.
Kreteks,, Clove cigarettes, are one of the exotic aspects of Bali. I've never smoked tobacco, but, when I found I could buy Gudang Garum brand kreteks individually right here, I bought a couple and every few weeks enjoy one or two puffs or just let one burn for a moment. I love the sweet spicy clove smell. To see more of the smoke you can move your screen slightly. When I do that the smoke becomes more or less visible. I got real lucky with the available light here - just sat down on the edge of the sunshine. This is sooc.
Much nicer on black background.
