Another reminder that this used to be a double track railway.

Over the Carmel Water at Kilmaurs.

The current wooden bridge replaced Murdoch's Bridge in the 1980s. This was the first iron bridge in Ayrshire and was built across the Carmel Water near St Maurs-Glencairn church to provide a shortcut for pedestrians travelling to Knockentiber and Crosshouse, as well as a route to the old Woodhill limestone quarries for local workmen, and to the old archery club's ground on the Carmel Holm next to the Woodhill railway viaduct. It was a wrought iron construction of "fine workmaship" and was paid for by public subscription with every person in the "west" paying a penny towards it. A gala day was held at its official opening. It was still in a good state of preservation in 1895 and was serviceable as late as the 1980s however it's significance was overlooked and it was replaced with a wooden bridge at a time when it was around two hundred years old. The Murdoch or Murdock (anglicised version) concerned was William Murdoch (21 August 1754 – 15 November 1839) from Lugar, the inventor and engineer. He worked for Boulton and Watt.

Southhook bricks came from the fireclay works of the same name. The works was located on a small triangle of land just to the north of the Busby Branch of the Glasgow & South Western Railway, a little way west of Knockentiber. Although there are very faint markings on the grass, there is otherwise no trace remaining of the works.

I found this one on the beach at Bentfield, Prestwick, so this seaworn brick has only travelled about ten miles from home.

Garage workshop built onto front of former school. Revisited on a weekday when the vehicle restoration and accident repair business was open. Sandy Wallace the garage proprietor was more then helpful. He kindly took us around the back to look at the old school building. From there I was able to work out that the part of the building we needed to see is actually indoors where his office is. That face of the wall is now plastered as it has been since before Sandy bought the premises. Unless the FB is entombed in the plaster, it is more likely that it was probably removed when the building use was changed. Footnote, if you ever need a vehicle repaired or restored in Ayrshire, Sandy gets great reviews.
