The Gothic brick church (in German, this style is known as Backsteingotik) in Seehausen dates its beginnings to the 12th century, but it was expanded and modernized in the 13th, and then again, to its current looks, in 15th century, turning the church into a hall church. A hall church is a church where the side aisle have just about, or the same ceiling height as the nave. At the same time as this work was done, these two towers were raised to their current height.

The church of Järeda, built in 1771 and replacing an older, medieval church which had gotten to small for the parish (the church might not have been preserved but a lot of the fittings from the old church found their way into the new one).

The unusual shape of the tower, or more exactly the lack of height compared to the rest of the church, was not by design. The local population was to take the stone needed for the building to the building-site, which of course was quite heavy work, and finally they had enough of it and petitioned the king to be excused from this work, a petition which was granted and the stubby tower was finished with a wooden construction.

Or Marienkirche as it is called in German.

This is a so-called hall church, built in the red brick Gothic style, known in German as Backsteingotik, which was very popular in the later Middle Ages in northern Germany and Poland, Denmark and modern day southern Sweden (which was Danish then). The church was begun soon after the founding of the town Neubrandenburg (1248) and the main altar was consecrated in 1298 (which means the church could function as a proper church).

The church was severely damaged in the 1945 bombings, as was the whole town, but the church was rebuilt to its old looks in the 1980s and 90s. After this the church was turned into a concert hall, which it still is.

The church in the village of Ranville, Normandy, is built in the latter part of the 19th century when they tore down the old, medieval one - but they spared the bell tower. And this is the Ranville church bell tower, built in the 11-12th centuries. It is actually quite impressive and make you wonder what the church was like that it was built as a part of.

The church of St. Mary in Stendal, Germany. It was built as a Gothic brick church (in German, this style is known as Backsteingotik) - a late Gothic hall church, replacing an older church. The work begun in 1420, the main altar was in place by 1471, but the towers were not finished until the 16th century.

This is the tower of St Bene't's church in Cambridge - an Anglo-Saxon building dated to the first half of the 11th century. The church itself has seen extensive remodeling but the tower only had some lighter retouches.

My first shot with my new camera, it works just fine. 05:45 in the morning, on my way to work. The clock on the church tower works fine too. Hand held and dark so I think the shutterspeed was a little too fast. September 11 2023.

Torre campanario, Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba, Andalucía, España

The Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba, officially known by its ecclesiastical name of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is the cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Due to its status as a former mosque, it is also known in Spanish as the Mezquita and in an historical sense as the Great Mosque of Córdoba.

The Great Mosque was constructed in 785 on the orders of Abd al-Rahman I, founder of the Islamic Emirate of Córdoba.

The Old Church in Oviken, Jamtland, Sweden. Built in the middle ages. It's not known exactly when, but it was expanded in 1503. The bell tower was built in 1751-52.

The church was abandoned in 1905 when the New Church was completed.

After major restorations completed in 1935 this old church again became the main church in Oviken.

The New Church is next in my photo stream.

Hade så kasst med ideer som man skulle kunna genomföra under veckan, hade tänkt mig inne i ett klocktorn men min vän som jobbar på stället var inte tillgänglig :( Så det fick bli att leta i lite gamla lådor hemma.

Nydala (Swedish for "The new valley") was a Cistercian monastery founded in the 1140s - together with the Alvastra monastery the first ones in Sweden. The name in Latin was "Sancta Maria de Nova Valle" or just "Nova Vallis" (which means "The new valley"). The Roma monastery on Gotland was founded by monks from Nydala.

In 1521 the monastery was sacked by the Danish king Christian II - according to legend killing the abbot and several of the monks. The monastery was re-established in 1524 - but in 1529, in the name of the Reformation, Nydala was appropriated by the king Gustav Vasa. At the time the monastery owned 250 farms, was the richest Cistercian convent in Sweden and the biggest landowner in this part of the country.

San Giacomo di Rialto Church (Italian: Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto). It has a large 15th-century clock above the entrance, a useful item in the Venetian business district but regarded as a standing joke for its inaccuracy. A part of the Rialto Bridge can be seen to the right.

According to tradition, San Giacomo is the oldest church in the city, supposedly consecrated in the year 421. Although documents exist mentioning the area but not the church in 1097, the first document citing the church dates from 1152. The church was rebuilt in 1071.

Venice is a unique artistic achievement. The city is built on 118 small islands. Venice also has one of the highest concentrations of great monuments such as Piazza San Marco with the cathedral and Palazzo Ducale.

It was from Venice that Marco Polo (1254-1324) set out in search of China, Sumatra, India and Persia.

The occurrence of exceptional high waters poses nowadays a significant threat to the protection and integrity of Venice lagoon and historic settlements.

St Pierre of Hermanville-sur-mer dated back to the 11th century (the bell tower is 12th century and the choir 14th century - but it's not unusual for a church to be redone from time to time throughout history, and the original Romanesque feeling is still very present).

It is also of interest for the events of 1944.

To quote the plaque on the wall on the church:

'At midday on the 14th June 1944

the BBC recorded and broadcast

the sound of two bells of this belfry

the third having been hit by a

shell.

On the 18th June 1944

in this same church the first mass

in liberated territory was celebrated.

This mass was broadcast by the BBC

to the world to whom it brought a

message of encouragement and hope.'

This plaque was offered not by the BBC (in spite of the wording) but the 3rd British Infantry division that had liberated Hermannsville-sur-mer on the 6th June 1944.

The church hall was built in 1681. A major renovation was done 1899-1900, designed by architect Eugen Thorburn. Then cross arms were added to both sides of the church hall. At the same time, an unusual steeple was built with both an onion dome and a spire.

Photographer's car to the right of the building, should have moved the car before taking the picture, ah well :).

The Holmen factories were started in the 1620s by Louis de Geer and produced brass. The first tower on the site was built in 1629. During the ravages of the Russians in 1719, most of the factories were destroyed, as well as almost the entire city of Norrköping. The gate tower into the factory area was rebuilt in 1750 (see the sign over the portal), only the ground floor remained from 1629. The tower was designed by Johan Georg Strubel. A bell cast in 1735 hangs in the tower hood.

In 1806 a paper manufacture was also started.

The clock tower is 65 meters high and was finished in 1958. The carillon consists of 47 bells and is the biggest in Sweden. The carillon plays different melodies automatically every hour during the day. Manually operated concerts are also given weekly during spring and summer.

Christmas Day morning. First parts of the church were built in the 14th and 15th century. The tower was probably built when an inauguration was held in 1468.

There are three bells in the tower. The big and the middle bell were cast in 1711 by Catharina Meyer. The small bell was cast in 1760.
