Lovely and sunny, but the wind is freezing cold, even going out into the garden isn't that much fun. So I had a look inside instead.

While I was filling my mug with water for a cup of tea I noticed that the dog food tin that had been soaking had bubbles on the top. Don't know why as although I'd put some washing up liquid in it last night it's not normally still bubbly in the morning.

I turned on the strip light and took some photos and this was the one I liked best.

I looked out my kitchen window during a heavy rain and saw the UFO hovering 😉

ODC-Shade

This shade hangs above the sink in my kitchen.

Been horribly wet here almost all day, so getting out for a photo wasn't an option. I happened to have my camera in my hand when I went to make a mug of tea and looked up at the kitchen light.

To cheer it up a bit I changed it to black and white and gave it a slight swirl.

This is the Kitchen Light. It too has been cropped as using the 1-time camera, it came out too dark.

Before Graham fell I had been chasing a Blackbird around the garden with my camera lens. I did get a photo, but it wasn't wonderful. So I decided to have some fun instead.

Oil and water on a plate with some ink I found dropped onto it. I then put the strip light on under the sink and took some photos.

Danish architect Poul Henningsen, known by his initials, ”PH” was obsessed with light. He is the legendary creator of the lighting series carrying his name. He can be said to be the world’s first lighting architect. Poul Henningsen devoted his entire career to investigating the importance of light for our well being. He worked on the theory that the observer should not be subjected to direct glare from the electric light source. Henningsen used a series of layered shades to both spread the light and conceal the light bulb, thus creating a softer more diffused lighting.

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen by the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine “NYT”. The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction—compared to man’s need for light remains the fondation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen.

The PH 5 will be our kitchen light in the new house.

I want to call this `Love Handles`.

I won`t.

Looked too good not to shoot. Now, let's eat.

My wife bought this light in a sale in 2002. Our elder son, a qualified electrician, put it up at Christmas when he came to see us. Sadly Valerie went into hospital a couple of months later so didn't get to use this light much.

I must get a couple more bulbs.

Last week, starbucks discontinued the pumpkinosity. Because pumpkin is the greatest flavour of ever and because christmas makes me sad and angry, I decided to bake my own damn pumpkin bread. AND IT WAS BETTER.

pca83: 1 week (Oct 18th – Oct25th, 2009): by fotobird1

Assignment: PCA83 – Still Life

Deadline: Oct. 25th, 2009

Image tag: pca83

Mission:

What better way to hone the skill of a photographer than to have them set up there own scene that is visually pleasing and lit well??

So for this assignment, let's try a still life and by this I mean I want us photographers to stage our subject(s), choose the lighting that will best work for our subject(s).

A few restrictions................no setting up outside, or using available light ( I know I love available light too)!!! Only color images will do (that one will be hard for me :) )

Flash lights, lamplight or even candles can be used (really anything but available light) and your subject (s) can be anything except people and animals...............any inanimate object(s) is fine. Color and contrast adjustments, and cropping are acceptable, but try to keep your images true to what you saw when you looked through the camera

WIT: Some day I will move into the world of flash photography, but until then controlled lighting will come from more domestic sources. In this case I set up my trusty black foamcore background on the kitchen island which is lit by a pendant light with a halogen bulb. To help diffuse the light a bit, I held a translucent flexible cutting mat near the light source. To add a bit of fill light on the right side, I set up a white cutting board to act as a reflector. The camera was on a tripod and the two second timer was used. I took several shots from various angles, and even used a small flashlight to paint in some light in some cases. I was surprised how well that worked. For post processing I adjusted the white balance in RAW and tweaked a levels layer in PSE before a bit of sharpening and cropping.

I was at a loss for a subject this week but while watching the baseball playoffs I remembered the small collection of old gloves we have. I tried various arrangements of the gloves (all, just one, two), the ball, and a bat. I had hoped to get more attempts in this week, but time really flew by.

Our clients new kitchen after she remodeled. The Glass Insulator Pendant Light added the perfect finishing touch. To see all of our lighting and home decor visit www.GlassInsulatorLights.co.

I am loving every bit of it.
