The kit and its assembly:
This literally small project had been lingering on my list for a while, but the Sixties Group Build at whatifmodellers.com in April 2024 made me start it, because if would fit thematically well and I already had the respective kit stashed away.
Effectively, this is just a “re-skinned” JGSDF Type 60 SPG, Aoshima offers a 1:72 scale kit of this rather obscure vehicle, and because it is so small the kit directly contains two of these tank hunters. I used this “offer” to mod the Type 60 with two stacked pairs of recoilless rifles as main armament, and I did some other small mods to change the vehicle’s look a little, like the light machine gun on the roof, the scratched smoke dischargers and a crewman who is actually a British WWII tank commander (but the uniform comes quite close to the early Bundeswehr style). However, I retained the Type 60’s overall shape, because it is so minimalistic that you can hardly change anything at all without compromising the concept. Still, it has a quite German look to it, so that I made a contemporary German tank hunter prototype from it.
A word about the Type 60 Aoshima kit(s): these were made with a good eye for details. For instance, the segmented styrene tracks are asymmetrical and reflect the staggered torsion bar running gear, and all hull areas which contain glazed sight slits are clear parts, just as front and rear lights. Even the interior is complete (even though you hardly see anything from it later, even though you can leave the engine cover open as well as the gearbox maintenance hatch on the front glacis plate). But with a gazillion of TINY bits and pieces, why must they have such thick sprue attachment points? The whole thing feels like a short-run kit. It is as good as impossible to clip the parts off of the sprues without either damaging the parts or requiring serious cleaning – not easy when the bits are 1-2mm in size only! Such a shame, because the kit as such is really excellent and otherwise goes together well, without need for PSR.
Painting and markings:
Well, the livery I settled upon is quite unspectacular, and there is no alternative to the Bundeswehr’s post-WWII uniform overall Gelboliv (RAL 6014) paint scheme, which was retained well into the Eighties and then replaced with the NATO-conformal three-tone camouflage in green, brown and black. On the other side, this typical style makes the vehicle easy to identify and its whiffy story more believable.
For Gelboliv I used Revell’s acrylic 42, which is authentic but IMHO quite light and saturated. I real life, vehicles painted in Gelboliv quickly faded into a muddy, greyish brown, and sun-bleaching on the upper surfaces was very common, too, so that I gave the model, after an overall base coat had been applied, a treatment with thinned Revell 46 (RAL 7003) and 87 (Dark Earth), and even mixed that with light grey (Revell 75) for horizontal surfaces to simulate this worn look. The interior of the vehicle was painted with Humbrol 41 (Ivory), an attempt to simulate the real RAL 9001 (Cremeweiss), with a grey engine block and transmission elements – even though there’s hardly anything to see from the latter once the model has been assembled. Another measure to add some diversity were simple small red dots on the wheel hubs.
Markings are minimal, I just provided the WT-105R with national markings, “Y” Bundeswehr registration plates, a tactical code and some standard stencils. After that a coat of matt acrylic varnish was applied.
To add visual excitement and hide some flaws (like the track segments) the model received dirt residues around the running gear, created with watercolors and mineral pigments. These were also used to simulate dust and mud crusts.
I actually caught a kit-tongue in one of my pictures!! Of course, I couldn't begin to see that through the tiny viewfinder, it was just wonderful luck.

I was fortunate to meet up with my old friend Kit and her husband two evenings after San Diego Comic-Con had closed for the night. These are from our second meetup.
I first shot with Kit when she was 17.The last was in 2017, the last time I got a ticket to SDCC. It was a pleasure to see her again!
The Lockheed Martin HC-130J Hercules The Combat King II is the U.S. Air Force's only dedicated fixed-wing personnel recovery platform and is flown by the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) and Air Combat Command (ACC). This C-130J variation specializes in tactical profiles and avoiding detection and recovery operations in austere environments. The HC-130J replaces HC-130P/Ns as the only dedicated fixed-wing Personnel Recovery platform in the Air Force inventory. It is an extended-range version of the C-130J Hercules transport. Its mission is to rapidly deploy to execute combatant commander directed recovery operations to austere airfields and denied territory for expeditionary, all weather personnel recovery operations to include airdrop, airland, helicopter air-to-air refueling, and forward area ground refueling missions. When tasked, the aircraft also conducts humanitarian assistance operations, disaster response, security cooperation/aviation advisory, emergency aeromedical evacuation, and noncombatant evacuation operations.
Features
Modifications to the HC-130J have improved navigation, threat detection and countermeasures systems. The aircraft fleet has a fully-integrated inertial navigation and global positioning systems, and night vision goggle, or NVG, compatible interior and exterior lighting. It also has forward-looking infrared, radar and missile warning receivers, chaff and flare dispensers, satellite and data-burst communications, and the ability to receive fuel inflight via a Universal Aerial Refueling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI).
The HC-130J can fly in the day; however, crews normally fly night at low to medium altitude levels in contested or sensitive environments, both over land or overwater. Crews use NVGs for tactical flight profiles to avoid detection to accomplish covert infiltration/exfiltration and transload operations. To enhance the probability of mission success and survivability near populated areas, crews employ tactics that include incorporating no external lighting or communications, and avoiding radar and weapons detection.
Drop zone objectives are done via personnel drops and equipment drops. Rescue bundles include illumination flares, marker smokes and rescue kits. Helicopter air-to-air refueling can be conducted at night, with blacked out communication with up to two simultaneous helicopters. Additionally, forward area refueling point operations can be executed to support a variety of joint and coalition partners.
Background
The HC-130J is a result of the HC/MC-130 recapitalization program and replaces Air Combat Command's aging HC-130P/N fleet as the dedicated fixed-wing personnel recovery platform in the Air Force inventory. The 71st and 79th Rescue Squadrons in Air Combat Command, the 550th Special Operations Squadron in Air Education and Training Command, the 920th Rescue Group in Air Force Reserve Command and the 106th Rescue Wing, 129th RQW and 176th Wing in the Air National Guard will operate the aircraft.
First flight was 29 July 2010, and the aircraft will serve the many roles and missions of the HC-130P/Ns. It is a modified KC-130J aircraft designed to conduct personnel recovery missions, provide a command and control platform, in-flight-refuel helicopters and carry supplemental fuel for extending range or air refueling.
In April 2006, the personnel recovery mission was transferred back to Air Combat Command at Langley AFB, Va. From 2003 to 2006, the mission was under the Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Fla. Previously, HC-130s were assigned to ACC from 1992 to 2003. They were first assigned to the Air Rescue Service as part of Military Airlift Command.

KIT ... is a gorgeous SEAL BICOLOR RAGDOLL. She will turn five years old in March. She is spayed, front-paw declawed and weighs in at a hefty 15 pounds. Kit is not fat, but a simply a large cat. Kit was purchased from a breeder as a kitten as a present for a grandchild, but the grandchild and Kit never got along so now she is in rescue. Kit does not deal well with strangers and expects that all defer to her preferences. In other words, she is a queen. However, if you are willing to follow all of her royal majesty's dictates, then she is a loving, affectionate dog-like cat who enjoys sleeping on her back, getting her tummy rubbed, being carried around and generally being near you. She also enjoys being brushed, even on her tummy. She enjoys string toys, but is a very low activity cat. Kit will need a family that is willing to let her set the pace of introductions, and who do not have small, active children. A quiet, adult home where she can be adored as the queen would be best (and is preferred). However, Kit can co-habitate with cat-friendly dogs, other cats, and older children who will respect her wishes. Kit can be vocal when she is lonely, but she is very good about laying around on her back and looking beautiful. ADOPTION FEE $200. FOSTERED IN OAK PARK, IL.
