Paris: M. de Brunoff & Cie, 1904. The illustrations were originated by James Tissot (1836-1902) who sketched as he read Scripture.

The edition, of which 561 copies were printed, contains 360 mounted colour, black-and-white and duo-tone illustrations in the text and 40 plates in three states: sepia-tone, partly hand-coloured, and finished coloured state. The last remaining 200 illustrations were painted after Tissot's death in 1902 by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines, Auguste François Gorguet, Charles Hoffbauer, Louis van Parys, Michel Simonidy and Georges Bertin Scott.

Gaspare Diziani (1689-1767) PRAGA

Le Roi David jouant de la harpe (King David Playing the Harp), painted around 1619 by Italian painter Domenico Zampieri, known as Le Dominiquin or Domenichino, is displayed in the Salon de Mercure of the Grands Appartements. This oil on canvas shows King David, one of the great Biblical figures, playing the harp and dictating the Psalms to an angel under divine inspiration. Collected by Cardinal Mazarin before 1653, it was acquired by Louis XIV in 1665 and held a place of significance in his apartments, reflecting the king's own musical passions and religious inclinations. The composition is noted for its balance of vertical and horizontal lines, the subtle curve of David's body echoing that of the harp, and the expressive depiction of divine inspiration and repentance on David's face. The painting was part of numerous royal and museum placements before returning to Versailles in 1895, where it now resides.

The Château de Versailles (Versailles Palace), located southwest of Paris, was transformed from a royal hunting lodge into a monumental palace under Louis XIV beginning in 1661, becoming the political and ceremonial center of the French monarchy until the Revolution in 1789. Designed by architects Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and decorator Charles Le Brun, the palace features the iconic Hall of Mirrors, royal apartments, and a vast Cour d’Honneur. Beyond the main château lie the formal Gardens of Versailles, laid out by André Le Nôtre, with geometric parterres, fountains, groves, and the Grand Canal. The wider estate includes the Domaine de Trianon, comprising the Grand Trianon (a neoclassical retreat built for Louis XIV), the Petit Trianon (used by Louis XV and Marie-Antoinette), and the Hameau de la Reine, a rustic model village created for the queen. After the Revolution, Versailles ceased to function as a royal residence and was repurposed over time into a museum of French history by Louis-Philippe in the 1830s, a role it continues to serve today.
