This lone fisherman, fished even through the worst smoke storm anyone could remember in recent history in the State of Washington. Forest fires on the west coast of the U.S.A have fueled this amazing thick smoke never seen before. www.king5.com/article/news/local/wildfire/amount-of-time-...

Thanks to KING5 news for airing this live this evening.
A graphic view looking into the crater of Mount Saint Helens from Johnston's Observatory. The road opens May 16th each year and that is as high as you can drive. I wanted to get there sooner for more snow on the peak but the weather didn't cooperate very well. Signs of destruction abound since it blew in 1980 but a lot more green still returns every year. It's also a great location for astro photography as the stars and Milky Way become visible right over the peak at night.
This is a 2 shot pano stitched vertically in Lr since I had the 70-200E lens on there for the day and it wasn't wide enough to include this foreground. I was still at f16 on accident after shooting some comps with blown up logs in the near foreground. Later when the stars came out I shot a few at 70mm and wide open which worked just okay. Will definitely have the 20mm f1.8 lens on for that next time. At 70mm, about 10 seconds is as long as you can go and still have pin-point stars. With the 20mm lens it could have been 20 or 30 seconds at a lower ISO.
Thank you for your amazing and kind visits my friends. You are the very best! :)

"Loggers used whistles to communicate from the logging tower operator to the workers down the hill. According to the Issaquah Historical Society, the whistle would be a signal that two logs were tied to a cable, ready to be towed. The whistle made a sound like poo poo, hence the name Poo Poo Point." (King5.com)

“Sunset, Sunrise Mono Lake”
Just back in the gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. It was so nice to be in shorts and t-shirts again and experience some nice warm sunshine! I had another great group of students, and I gave them one heck of a tour of Death Valley and the Alabama Hills. They all did a great job learning and using my Old-School, All-In-Camera Techniques. I have a ton of new images to show from this trip, but I decided to show my very last shooting day first. After class, I visited the amazing Eureka Dunes deep in the Death Valley Back County and I have some epic shots to show from that location. Heading out from there we made it to Mono Lake just in time to capture the very best sunset I have ever seen on this unique Lake. The very high salt content of mono Lake creates these strange formations call Tufa’s. I love these fascinating formations and finally on my 5th visit to the area I got the Gallery Shots I have been looking for. That was followed up by an excellent sunrise, then it was a two-day drive to get back home. Lots more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

"Clearing Drama" Got out for an overnight backpack into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Waited out some thunderstorms while setting up camp, but then the weather started to clear and we were able to get out and do some exploring. After setting up in a few other locations but not feeling satisfied, we decided to make a big and very strenuous move to this location. Slippery rock and some climb-overs and scrambling was exhausting, but so worth it to end up in this location. It was so exciting to watch the clearing drama right at sunset light up the clouds and peak, just as the water calmed enough to grab this reflection shot. Well worth the effort! Thank you so much for looking!

Lake Cushman is a 4,010-acre (16.2 km2) lake and reservoir on the north fork of the Skokomish River in Mason County, Washington. The lake originally was a long narrow broadening of the Skokomish River formed in a glacial trough and dammed by a terminal moraine from the last ice age, during the Vashon stade.
The lake was expanded after construction of the Cushman Dam No. 1. The lake is maintained by this dam and provides electrical power to the Tacoma Power system.
As a popular retreat for hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking, Lake Cushman's shoreline is dotted with resorts and rental cabins. The lake is notable for its beautiful crystal clear blue water and the huge round rocks surrounding it, as well as thick stands of hemlock, fir and cedar trees.

Well hello again everyone! Sorry I have been absent for a long time, and even a worse Flickr contact! I started a new job back in October and have been very busy since then. Also, we have been dealing with a foggy inversion for most of December, so I just have not had a chance to get out and shoot much.
After two stunning sunrises last week, that I had to miss because I was working, I was not about to miss Saturday's sunset! So I headed out to Discovery Park and parked where I should not have parked, however, when I went back to my car, there were five other people that had the same idea!
All I can say is that I was so happy to be out shooting again! I had so much fun taking different angles of the lighthouse, some great some...uh...not so great! Anyways, it was great fun. I would like to dedicate this image to my friend Patti www.flickr.com/photos/photopatthomas/ whom has kept up the pressure for me to post something these past two months! Here is looking your way Patti!
As it is looking good later today and I am off, I need to get out and shoot some Christmas scenes! Our local NBC affiliate is using my picture of the Mukilteo Lighthouse at Christmas www.flickr.com/photos/fresnatic/5267813297/ to promote their Holiday Photo Contest on their website: www.king5.com/your-news/133974233.html?contest=learn Pretty cool!
I also donated some photos to the Fred Meyer in Issaquah to help raise money for "Relay for Life," and about 7 have already sold! All of the proceeds go to the "Relay for Life," a worthy cause. I also have about 8 photos for sale at a new art gallery located in Fall City, Washington. The art gallery is called "Quirks of Art" and is located right on the main street across from the Snoqualmie River!
As I have said, I have been busy in my hiatus from Flickr and here is another reason! I shot some photos for Fabri Fine Jewelry located in Bellevue Square Mall earlier this fall for their new Facebook Page, which you can view here: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.305213632840343.90468.1...
This is a combination of three exposures (-2,0,+2) merged and tonemapped in Photomatix. I used the "De-ghosting" tool to prevent artifacts from being created from the merging process, right where the bright yellows of the sunset occur on the horizon. I did a little perspective crop and dodging and burning in Photoshop. I ran through the new Topaz Adjust 5 to regain details. I pulled back the greens and overall saturation in Lightroom, as well as added the slight vignette.
As always, thank you so much for your views, comments, faves and support. I will be around a little more to look at your photostreams. Please be patient as it takes me some time to catch up! Again, I am happy to be back posting and to be out shooting!
Please do not use my images on blogs or websites without my permission. The images you see here on this site are available for licensing, so please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.

Mount St. Helens (known as Lawetlat'la to the indigenous Cowlitz people, and Loowit or Louwala-Clough to the Klickitat) is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Portland, Oregon and 96 miles (154 km) south of Seattle, Washington. Mount St. Helens takes its English name from the British diplomat Lord St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late 18th century. The volcano is located in the Cascade Range and is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, a segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire that includes over 160 active volcanoes. This volcano is well known for its ash explosions and pyroclastic flows.
Mount St. Helens is most notorious for its major eruption on May 18, 1980, the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways, and 185 miles (298 km) of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche, triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1, caused a lateral eruption that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft (2,950 m) to 8,363 ft (2,549 m), leaving a 1 mile (1.6 km) wide horseshoe-shaped crater. The debris avalanche was up to 0.7 cubic miles (2.9 km3) in volume. The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument was created to preserve the volcano and allow for the eruption's aftermath to be scientifically studied.
As with most other volcanoes in the Cascade Range, Mount St. Helens is a large eruptive cone consisting of lava rock interlayered with ash, pumice, and other deposits. The mountain includes layers of basalt and andesite through which several domes of dacite lava have erupted. The largest of the dacite domes formed the previous summit, and off its northern flank sat the smaller Goat Rocks dome. Both were destroyed in the 1980 eruption.
Figured I'd crop this 16:9 for all the widescreen folks like I out there... sure looks great. Great work The Museum of Flight in restoring this beauty for one last flight.

"It's still unknown exactly what caused the MV Salish to run aground at the Coupeville ferry terminal Sunday (09/09/2018) afternoon.
State Ferries spokesperson Ian Sterling says Keystone Harbor is the most challenging landing in the system with "zero room" for something to go wrong."

KING-TV: EDMONDS, Wash. - Edmonds police say a pedestrian died after being struck by a freight train near the waterfront train station just after noon on Tuesday.
Ferry service on the Edmonds-Kingston run was suspended for several hours during the investigation because the stopped train blocked access to the ferry terminal.
BNSF Rainway spokesman Gus Melonas said witnesses say the person ran onto the tracks as the train was approaching and it couldn't be stopped fast enough.
The long, but mostly empty, freight train traveling from Portland to Vancouver, British Columbia, was going about 32 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
Melonas says nine trains were held up by the accident.

We'll miss you Monika...your smiles, your strength and your love of the mountains. Man or woman, you were the strongest person I ever climbed with. I'm sure you will carry that strength with you wherever you are now. And, as usual, you're breaking the track for the rest of us.
To your closest friends and all your famil...y - my heartfelt regrets. I wish I got to know you better, but in those few tours over the years you were a great person to have along.
Here's an image from a few weeks ago near Snoqualmie Mountain. Thanks for getting me out of the house to go on a tour Monika. From what I've heard about you, you did that for a lot of people.
