The 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was first raised by Theodore Roosevelt in 1898 to fight in the Spanish-American War in Cuba. Along with other forces, the regiment set off from Tampa. Teddy Roosevelt’s men distinguished themselves in battle, gaining the ‘Rough Riders’ nickname. Roosevelt’s actions helped propel him into the Presidency between 1901-08. He was a popular and charismatic figure, a keen man of action even when holding the highest office. TRR famously spared the life of a bear cub one day when out hunting, an event celebrated in a New York newspaper’s cartoon, which in turn prompted an enterprising company to produce the first Teddy Bear soft toys.

The Rough Riders meanwhile live on as a Tampa charity group. They were out in force for Toys for Tots Day today, where people were encouraged to contribute a teddy bear and other gifts.

It was Toys for Tots Day in Tampa, sponsored by the local WFLA News Channel 8 ABC TV franchise and the Rough Riders charity. My wife contributed a teddy bear plus other gifts that I dropped off, so helping to fill out to replica trolley car.

On Thursday, November 13, 2014 KIND passed out free bars & a rose for kindness day.

Tampa’s Channel 8 WFLA sponsored Kindness Day, which included drives to donate blood, non-perishable food and teddy bears. We participated. In this version of Where’s Waldo, here are some of the 2,500 teddy bears that were donated.
