St. Johns River
Circa 1971-72
If you ever wonder why we got rid of or reduced phosphorous and nitrogen being discharged into our waterways, here is a classic example. Prior to the Clean Water Act, the St. Johns River at Orange Park would become overgrown for miles with vegetation flourishing on the nutrients. Later, it would die and start to rot, taking all the ioxygen out of the water and leading to things like fish kills.

This is a photograph from the East of Ireland Marathon Series Marathon and Half Marathon which was held at Sutton and Howth, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Saturday 23rd November 2013 at 09:00. This was a special charity marathon organised to raise some funds for the vicitms of the Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, which was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record and caused catastrophic destruction in the central Philippines, particularly on Samar Island and Leyte (Tacloban city). According to the United Nations about 11 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless. Over a million houses were damaged. Over 5,000 people (November 20th figures) were killed by the storm or it's aftermath. The marathon was organised by the Filipino Irish (Fil-Irish Runners) who are living and working in Ireland and who are very active participants in the Irish road racing and marathon running scene. The race today showed great solidarity and friendship between all of the runners in the races today with their Filipino friends. The atmosphere at the start was sombre and respectful but it was important that everyone enjoyed the day as this was a wonderful gesture from the East of Ireland marathon running community. Many marathon running friends who couldn't make it today also provided donations to this most worthy of causes. Well done to everyone involved. A day to be very proud of this community of marathon runners in Ireland. The total amount raised was over 2500 euros with proceeds coming directly from today's race and other sources who contributed. The Filipino Irish will ensure that this money will go directly to charities working on the ground with people in the devasted areas of the Philippines. The Filipino Irish also provided a lovely spread of refreshments representing beautiful Filipino confectionary!
This race event was part of the East of Ireland Marathon Series. The East Of Ireland Marathon Series aims to make marathons affordable and convienient for the runners of Ireland. The serires organisers aim to promote marathon running and to make the process as stress free and enjoyable as possible. All courses are measured to full AAI standards and have a minimum of 10 Entrants. The marathons are self sufficent to a degree although there are limited supplies of water available on the day of the race. There will be no extra frills like chip timing and finish gantrys. However all finishing times are accurately and officially recorded. This is to keep the price down and keep the races as affordable as possible. The East of Ireland Marathon series is all inclusive and welcomes runners who are new to marathon running as well as experienced veterans.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: The East of Ireland marathon series stricly limits the number of participants. There were about 50 participants in the race today. There was the option to run 2 loops and finish a half marathon.
Weather: The overnight frost meant that it was a calm but very chilly start to the race. There was some beautiful periods of November sunshine with hardly any breeze. This was particularly welcome as the very tough hills on the course were somewhat more managable without a head wind.
Course: The race is a 4 looped course of Howth head. The loop which is approximately 6.63 miles starts at Sutton cross roads on the Howth Road. The route then proceeds south eastwards along the Greenfield Road following on to the Carrickbrack Road and onwards to the top of Howth Head. The route follows the R105 the whole way around in an anti-clockwise formation. When the route reaches the peak of Howth Head it follows the R105 north along Thormanby Road into Howth Village. When in Howth Village the route follows Harbour Road and then proceeds westwards back to the starting point of the loop. Just before the return to the starting point there is some very severe downhill which is tough on the legs after several miles of climbing.
Location Map: This is the start finish area at on the Harbour Road in Howth Village: goo.gl/maps/rZ6eD (Google Streetview). The Summit of Howth is where the climbing is over (see Google StreetView here goo.gl/maps/iSc8e)

Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Major Edward Sherson, T.D., who has been killed in action, was a well-known Auckland officer. He joined "A" Battery nearly thirty years ago, and passed through every rank in turn from gunner to lieutenant-colonel, commanding the Auckland Field Artillery Brigade, being a commissioned officer for over twenty years. He held the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration and the Long Service Medal. At the outbreak of the war, although over military age, he offered to serve in any capacity the authorities desired. He was offered an appointment in the infantry with the rank of major, which he accepted, and left New Zealand in command of the twentieth reinforcements in December, 1916. Major Sherson took up his new duties so thoroughly that he quickly qualified for and was appointed to the position of chief musketry instructor in Sling camp, England, where he was kept till April last, when he crossed to France. There he joined the Second Battalion, Auckland Infantry, with which he was serving at the time of his death. Major Sherson leaves a widow and had four sons and one daughter, the youngest son being 14 years of age and the daughter 10. The two eldest sons are serving with the artillery in France, while the third was on the Antarctic ship Aurora when that vessel disappeared in the Pacific last year. [2]

SHERSON.— On the 5th June, accidentally killed in Khyber Pass Road, Hugh Sherson, second son of Mrs. A. M. Sherson, and the late Lieut.-Colonel E. Sherson, of 14, Haydn Street; aged 24 years. Funeral will leave his late residence, 14, Haydn Street, on Sunday, inst., at 2 p.m.[12]
CHAR-A-BANC CAPSIZES.
COLLISION WITH TRAMCAR.
MAN DIES OF INJURIES.
FIVE OTHER PEOPLE HURT.
A sensational accident, with fatal consequences, occurred in Khyber Pass Road at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, when a large char-a-banc, loaded with passengers for the races at Ellerslie, struck a tramcar and capsized, throwing the passengers into the roadway. Six persons sustained injuries necessitating medical attention, one of them succumbing to his injuries several hours later in the Auckland Hospital. Those who received injuries are: Mr. Hugh Sherson, aged 24. Assistant traffic inspector to the City Council, who resided at 14, Hayden Street, fatal injuries.
Mr. Frank Houser, a married man, aged 28, residing at King's Court, injuries to face and right arm.
Mr. Leonard Brokenshire, a young man residing at Avondale, bruises to face and hands.
Seaton Hammond, a child whose parents reside in Grey Lynn, injuries to right foot.
Delphio Jackson, a thirteen-year-old child, of Te Aroha, injuries to right leg.
Mr. Houser was admitted to the hospital, but the other four mentioned as receiving minor injuries were able to proceed to their homes. Another man, whose name was not ascertained, also received slight injuries, which were treated at the hospital before he went home.
Descent of Park Road Slope.
The char-a-banc, carrying a full complement of passengers, and driven by the owner, Mr. Frederick Charles Cleal, carrier, of Victoria Street West, was proceeding down the slope of Park Road with the engine cut off, when a tramcar, which had stopped immediately above the junction of the road with Khyber Pass Road, moved on again down Khyber Pass toward Newmarket. On seeing the tramcar, the driver of the motor-vehicle instantly applied the brakes, but the slope of the road and the heavy passenger load made a checking of speed and, though the vehicle swerved to avert a collision, it struck the rear of the tramcar and overturned. The passengers were thrown in all directions- Mr. Sherson was said to have been standing on the footboard by the driver's side when the vehicle capsized. The driver himself escaped injury. Dr. A. McG. Grant was summoned to the scene of the accident, and ordered Mr. Sherson, who was suffering from serious internal injuries, to be removed to the hospital. The injured man, however, succumbed at about 4.33 p.m. The char-a-banc sustained damage to the bonnet and minor breakages. The impact as it capsized tore the hood completely off. The vehicle was one of the largest of its class, and was insured. The tramcar, comprising two coupled cars, escaped all other damage than a broken side panel.
View Obscured by Hoarding.
The driver of the char-a-banc, Mr. Cleal, stated yesterday that his view of the tramcar was obscured at first by a large advertising hoarding situated at the side of the car-stop. On noticing the car moving out from the stop he sounded the horn frequently and applied the brakes, but they had no effect in stopping the vehicle's progress. A complaint regarding the same locality was made recently at a meeting of the Grammar School Board of Governors, when it was pointed out that a similar hoarding on the opposite side of the road constituted a danger to traffic emerging from Mountain Road into Khyber Pass.
The record of the family has been a somewhat tragic one, the father having been killed in action during the war, and the youngest of the three sons having lost his life on the Antarctic ship Aurora which disappeared in the Pacific in 1917.
Mr. Hugh Sherson was born in Auckland, and was educated at the Beresford Street School and the Auckland Grammar School. He went to the front in 1918 as a gunner in the 9th Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery. On his return after the armistice he undertook traffic inspector's duties for the City Council. Deceased's father, Major Edward Sherson, a well-known Auckland officer, left for the front in 1916, in command of the 20th served with the Second Battalion, Auckland Infantry, and was killed at Crevecoeur in October, 1918. Before the war he was a lieut.-colonel in the Field Artillery, The eldest son served with the artillery in France, and is now a purser on the Paloona.[13]

Such a shame about the power lines as it was a beautiful, beautiful view with terrific light. A nice walk indeed.
Visited Stony Kill Falls with a predition of cloudy skies, which would be perfect for waterfall photography. Unfortunately the clouds did not materialize so the usual contrast issues ensued. There was still substantial ice deep in the gorge.
But as last year, the color of the water was bright yellow, an effect for which I have no explanation. Perhaps algae blooms on the rocks.

License to kill, from the album Infidels. Infidels is the twenty-second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on October 27, 1983 by Columbia Records.
Lyrics
Bob Dylan
Man thinks ’cause he rules the earth he can do with it as he please
And if things don’t change soon, he will
Oh, man has invented his doom
First step was touching the moon
Now, there’s a woman on my block
She just sit there as the night grows still
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Now, they take him and they teach him and they groom him for life
And they set him on a path where he’s bound to get ill
Then they bury him with stars
Sell his body like they do used cars
Now, there’s a woman on my block
She just sit there facin’ the hill
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Now, he’s hell-bent for destruction, he’s afraid and confused
And his brain has been mismanaged with great skill
All he believes are his eyes
And his eyes, they just tell him lies
But there’s a woman on my block
Sitting there in a cold chill
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Ya may be a noisemaker, spirit maker
Heartbreaker, backbreaker
Leave no stone unturned
May be an actor in a plot
That might be all that you got
’Til your error you clearly learn
Now he worships at an altar of a stagnant pool
And when he sees his reflection, he’s fulfilled
Oh, man is opposed to fair play
He wants it all and he wants it his way
Now, there’s a woman on my block
She just sit there as the night grows still
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?

License to kill is also the name of a song used as the soundtrack to the 16th James Bond film of the same name, performed by Gladys Knight and released by MCA Records in 1989.
Lyrics
Gladys Knight
Ooooh
Oh-hooo
I feel, I've got to hold on to your love
Oooh.
Hey baby, thought you were the one who tried to run away.
Ohh, baby, wasn't I the one who made you want to you?
Please don't bet that you'll ever escape me
Once I get my sights on you.
Got a license to kill to kill
And you know I'm going straight for your heart.
Got a license to kill
Got a license to kill to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart.
Got a license to kill
License to kill.
Hey baby, think you need a friend to stand here by your side
Yes you do your side
Ohh, baby, now you can depend on me to make things right (things right)
Please don't bet that you'll ever escape me
Once I get my sights on you
Got a license to kill to kill
And you know I'm going straight for your heart.
Got a license to kill
Got a license to kill to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart.
Got a license to kill
Say that somebody tries to make a move on you
In the blink of an eye, I will be there too
And they better know why I'm gonna make them 'em pay
Till their dying day
Till their dying day
Till their dying day
Got a license to kill to kill
And you know I'm going straight for your heart.
Got a license to kill
Got a license to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart.
Got a license to kill
Got a license to kill to kill
And you know I'm heading straight for your heart.
Got a license to kill
Got a license to kill
Anyone who tries to tear us apart.
Got a license to kill
License to kill
Gotta hold onto your loving.

Often when you ordered Dahl Baht with meat, you'd glance out of the window and some poor animal was
being slaughtered. Chickens we're often at the top of the slaughter list. I had the pleasue of "filming" one such occasion with this series of pictures. He wasn't very good at the killing, it seemed to go on and on (I'd always been told you snap the neck first, but he went at it with a blunt knife). After he had removed the head the chicken kept moving it's legs for a good minute, and it cleared it's bowels as well. Nice.
It's good to understand that to eat meat, the animal is first killed. We're so far removed from seeing this with food we buy in the supermarkets.
