The New Jerusalem Monastery was founded in 1656 in the Moscow region by Patriarch Nikon. According to his plan, the monastery was to become the center of the Orthodox world. Topography, place names, church buildings of the monastery and the surrounding area, stretching for several tens of kilometers, created the image of the Holy Land and reproduced the main Christian shrines of Palestine. On the hill located in the center of this territory, called Zion, a monastery was founded - a kind of city-temple. Some buildings of the monastery complex repeat the outlines of the structures of the Holy Land, and the main cathedral of the monastery, consecrated in 1685, was built in the likeness of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The cathedral reproduces the sacred likenesses of Mount Calvary, the cave of the Holy Sepulcher, the place of the three-day burial and the Life-giving Resurrection of the Savior. The towers also have symbolic names: Entry Jerusalem, Gethsemane, etc. The hills surrounding the monastery were called the Olives, Favorsky, etc., the villages - Preobrazhenskoe, Nazareth, Capernaum. The fast winding river Istra, named Jordan, flows through the land of Russian Palestine; the stream flowing around the monastery hill is the Kidron Stream. Nowadays, a significant part of the territory is occupied by the city of Istra, which until 1930 was called Voskresenskoye.

In 1919 the monastery was closed, on its territory the New Jerusalem museum was opened, the holy places were partly destroyed, partly consigned to oblivion and changed beyond recognition.

Having begun to decay even after it was closed, the monastery suffered greatly during the Great Patriotic War. During the three-week German occupation in 1941, the museum was looted. During the retreat of the Nazi troops, the monastery was blown up, the tower and the bell tower of the monastery were destroyed, and the cathedral was significantly damaged.

Restoration work at the monastery began in 1947; they were carried out especially intensively in the 1960s and 1980s.

In 1994, the process of transferring the buildings of the monastery to the Russian Orthodox Church began. Jul 18, 1994

Full-scale restoration activities began in December 2011. The restoration of the Resurrection Cathedral was completed in 2015.

The Kidron running by the Mar Saba monastery. Well known to Christian and Jew alike , the Kidron Creek is along with the Jordan River of world renown, but has unfortunately become a sewer in desperate need for cleaning.

on Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, shot across the Kidron Valley, but I am not sure what exactly is going on, so may someone who knows fill me in? So far a couple of you have, and your replies boil down to that the above is not a burial scene, but Chasidim (Ultra Orthodox Jews) saying prayers at the grave of a Tzadik (spiritual leader) whose tombstone is wrapped in blue cloth to stand out from the rest. Chasidim obviously belive that such prayers "may help them with predicaments they face in current life".

A 5th C AD monastery, the largest in the Judaean desert. The complex is built on the southern cliffs of the Kidron creek, and is protected inside a walled area with dozens of structures. It was established by Saint Sabas (Arabic: Mar Saba), and named after him. The monastery started as a place of seclusion of few monks in the caves, led by Sabas. Over the years it was built, expanded, and fortified. During the peak times it housed about 500 monks. Bible Walks.com)

Wheeling and Lake Erie’s 7023 with an emblem commemorating the railroad’s 30th year of service leads 221 through Kidron, Ohio. August, 2021

Sweet evening light shines on Wheeling & Lake Erie 7010 and 7003 as they lead a monster 221 west along the Brewster Sub passing a local dairy farm in Kidron.

Excerpt from seetheholyland.net:

On the right looms the wall of the Temple Mount, with the sealed double portals of the Golden Gate standing out. On the left, the world’s largest Jewish cemetery stretches up the Mount of Olives.

The cemetery’s location follows the Jewish belief that the long-awaited Messiah will pass through the Golden Gate to begin the resurrection of the dead.

In reaction to this belief, Muslims established a cemetery in front of the gate to block the Messiah’s path — and this may also be why the Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Magnificent sealed the gate in 1541.

During the Second Temple period a high, two-tiered bridge spanned the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount to the Mount of Olives. Across this bridge on the Day of Atonement each year a goat symbolically bearing the sins of the people — the original scapegoat — was led into the wilderness.

The Golden Gate may have been where Jesus entered the city on Palm Sunday. It was probably also the Beautiful Gate of Acts 3:1-10, where the apostle Peter healed a lame beggar.

My last shot of a surprising good winter chase day on the Wheeling. Nice to see many of the 'Land's usuals at other spots between Monroeville and Kidron. And to TC for the initial tip that I probably had time for the hour and 10 minute drive to Monroeville (I had an hour and 15). They were able to make pretty quick work of recovering from stalling on Hartland Hill since there was a 227 waiting for them at Hartland that came to rescue them. From there on, it was no stops until Brewster. February 7, 2021

Five units and 79 cars bring train 224 east at Kidron on the afternoon of March 3, 2018. Thanks Tim and Terry for the updates.

The three lowest numbered SD40-3's on the Wheeling roster, led by the sixth SD40 ever built, bring a 137-car empty stonetrain west at Kidron, Ohio, on the evening of August 24, 2018. Though 90% of the train was comprised of new GATX hoppers, the first three cars were in Algoma Central and Wisconsin Central schemes.

Mar Saba monastery in the West Bank looks like a film set, even by the standards of Greek Orthodox monasteries in the Holy Land.

The Holy Lavra of Saint Sabbas, generally known as Mar Saba is a Greek Orthodox monastery overlooking the Kidron Valley in Palestine, at a point halfway between Bethlehem and the Dead Sea.

Mar Saba is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world, and it maintains many of its ancient traditions. One in particular is the restriction on women entering the main compound. The only building that women can enter is the Women's Tower, near the main entrance.

The monastery was founded by Sabbas the Sanctified in 483, on the eastern side of the Kidron Valley, where - according to the monastery's own website - the first seventy hermits gathered around the hermitage of St Sabbas. Later on, the laura relocated its present site to the opposite, western side of the gorge, where the Church of Theoktistos was built in 486 and consecrated in 491.

After working Bolivar yesterday afternoon, a Brewster yard crew went west to Kidron to spot 2 and pull 1. Matched Alco-trucked GP35-3's 103 and 109 provided the power. Though the 109 looks nice, I think we can all agree the 103 was the better unit to have leading.

A four pack of Tigers lead WE 430 through Kidron, OH.

A pair of tigers hustle past the elevators at Kidron with a healthy 237 for Willard in tow.

Situated in Area B in the West Bank, Mar Saba is a very impressive place, it hangs in the Kidron Valley, and if you followed the valley to it's source you would end up at the Mount of Olives. We got to see it on a jeeping trip that we took, we stayed in Area C, but non-Israeli tourists can and do go and take a look around this impressive place.

The MMA/BCOL cast off is almost unrecognizable as it leads two other 16-645's towards Orrville as the moon floats overhead. They will skip across the PRR there, and will ultimately have to tangle with the Big Four at New London for those of you with exquisite taste in only the finest history.

It only took all day but they finally showed up with about zero notice, and then proceeded to beat me with a stick until the afterburners had to cool off for the swing at Spencer. Thanks to the fella who shall remain nameless.

By 2014, near Voskresensky Cathedral, the bell tower destroyed in 1941 by German troops was restored and new bells were installed.

Restoration of the monastery, which represents the only successful attempt to recreate the image of the Holy Land, cost 10 billion rubles, of which almost 1 billion 300 million were national donations. By the end of 2016, the restoration work in the monastery was completed.
