I went to the pumpkin patch with a few friends today! I didnt really want a pumpkin I just wanted to take "fall photos"

Kind of a crappy picture... oh well... I didn't wan to put that much effort in it today. It's been a long day... a long week actually. Glad it's Friday.
the walk that day wasn’t very long. about 1.3 miles which seems to be where all the interesting stuff is. third avenue was usually the route home and i never saw anybody.
so i am walking down the street and three african american guys and one girl were hanging around the yard next to one of the houses.
anytime there are more than a couple of men together in my neighborhood i get nervous no matter what colour. what are they going to say? am i going to get hassled? too sad in our society but often times that is the way it is where women have to be nervous to be alone on the street.
as i approached i gave one of my silly-girl waves — you know, the kind where you hold up your hand, palm forward and shake back and forth. and said “hey” with a big grin.
you should have seen their faces. i think they just expected the old girl to just keep on walking.
two of them looked at me as if to say “WTF” but one WAVED the “silly girl wave” back. not as enthusiastically i was waving but still “the wave.” it didn’t look natural on him but was just a quick honest response.
being the bold girl i am i told them about my project, did they mind talking with me and could i take their pictures.
“sure.”
so leaning up against the pickup truck, i was getting names, writing stories down as fast as i could but finally gave up trying to keep decent notes.
bo, the elder of the three was chewing on sunflower seeds. he turned his head and spat them right at my feet.
“hey, dude, that is so not cool!”
he didn’t say anything but he quit spitting sunflower seeds at me.
michael was just sitting smoking, relating how he and bo met and were sort of related. much laughter was going on. the young woman didn’t want her photo taken but she would interject bits and pieces of their experiences and laughed at the men.
after i photographed bo and michael, shavelle spoke up and asked why i hadn’t photographed him yet.
well, i wasn’t sure he wanted to be photographed. frankly i thought he was a little scary because when i approached he said “wow man, that camera is the first thing i saw”
“yep, it is my life.”
he really wanted to be photographed and i really wanted to photograph him everybody was happy. he was standing in full sunlight so i asked if he would move to the porch so i could get the shot with him in the shade. black people are hard to photograph in full sun.
he said ok. i thought the best spot was next to a door with christmas decorations.
he was still scary. i dunno, maybe i shouldn‘t admit that. as i looked at the photos later, i thought they were all scary.
but why? was it race?
i started thinking about other ex-cons i had photographed and thought, “dang, they are all scary. black or white. what the heck are you doing walking around the neighborhood with your camera. main street is ok, but you maybe should rethink your walking route.”
the common thread in all these ex-con’s lives is how they want to live a better life, be more of a positive influence on others.
i just figure “ok.”
there is a very different vibe between street people and guys or women with prison records.
bo, michael and shavell were all very proud of the fact they were off parole and intended to stay that way. they had done their stints and now — well, i don’t know what now. what is there? shavell said he had been inside six times. i did NOT ask why. that ain’t none of my business.
i offered my thanks for the interviews, said “see ya.” and walked home.
a couple of days later i saw michael while i was driving around and asked if he and the others would like prints of the photos.
he seemed surprised i had pulled over, but thought that prints were a cool idea. charles, the old guy i had bought lunch for a few weeks ago was there, waving like crazy with a big smile on his face.
the guys just kickin’ it didn’t seem so scary. i think i have an over-active imagination.
We're just kickin' it over here. This guy likes to have his hands free, and it's nice not to be bound to the wrap this time around. He is finding his voice and using it when needed- I am having so much fun with this little guy!

update: i did have prints made for the guys. they looked amazed at photos of themselves. what handsome men.
