A view from Key Summit, one of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand.

The view from Key Summit off of Routeburn Track in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. Only a few km from the Divide entrance to Routeburn Track beckons this incredible side hike, offering spectacular views of the dramatic South Island scenery.

When on a workshop, each night I review the next day's proposed photography location and consider all the details and the latest weather forecast. On this particular evening we were in Te Anau and the forecast for Fiordland was for strong North West winds and heavy rain. Our objective for sunrise was Key Summit, which from Te Anau meant a 3am departure. With a forecast like that you would be forgiven for choosing not to go. I reviewed the forecast closely and especially the speed of the incoming weather and the weather maps. Having many years experience in New Zealand's mountains meant I had some idea of how the weather developed, but of course no one has a crystal ball. I said to the group that rather than stay in bed we should roll the dice and try our luck. We awoke to calm conditions, as we approached the start of the Routeburn track it was still dark but I could see we were in cloud. As we walk along the track our head lamps picked up the tiny droplets of water in the air, it was strangely calm. Shortly before we reached the turnoff to Key Summit the air cleared and we could see stars above. I knew we had climbed above the low cloud and I had a sense this was going to be one of those magic mornings in the mountains...

Wandering about on mountains worn down by past glaciations.

(Reviewing folders of old images again - surprising what's been forgotten).

Photographs available for purchase at www.lynncyrus.com. This moment was probably the pinnacle of my NZ trip. 360 degrees of mountains, a lovely alpine habitat...a nirvana of sorts.

Dawn on Key Summit, Fiordland, NZ.

Top of Key Summit Tarn (near Milford Sound, Fiordland, South Island, NZ). This pond may not be worth the title of "tarn" but "Key Summit Puddle" didn't sound right.

Map coordinates are approximate.

Key Summit allows the 360 degrees view on Fjordland National Park and has quite a lot small lakes. For this shot I had to remove the shoes and go into the swamp. The temperature of the water was only slight above zero which made me feet completely inert.

I've been clearing out my Lightroom library a bit the last weeks, hard drive space is always at a premium. It's a good process to go through too; not only saving space, but a chance to review old images, see how you've learned and grown as a photographer. And you often come across old photos you dismissed at the time.

Lake Fergus (front) and Lake Gunn (rear), as viewed from approx 2 kms along the ridgeline from Key Summit, Fiordland National Park. The Milford Road (State Highway 94) can be seen skirting around the RHS of Lake Fergus.

Temperate jungle along the Routebourn Track and route to Key Summit, Fiordland, New Zealand. Rocky slopes and ridges lying on the other side of a deep valley are visible through gaps in the trees. The rocky terrain makes an unusual juxtaposition with the jungle.

View from Key Summit. Cannot see much due to low, rain clouds.

The KeySummit Alpine Trail. A very heavy track with massive altitude difference. It´s a really strong walk but it´s awesome! Beautiful Fiordland / New Zeeland

From a bit south of Key Summit. The haze lends a sense of depth. Several drainages meet out of view at the bottom right and flow rightward. Massive glaciation smoothed off all but the highest parts of these peaks. My guess is that the lake is impounded behind a terminal glacial moraine. The trail to the lake starts at the road far below. The road to Milford Sound runs along the bottom of the canyon leading toward the upper left.

I walked the Routeburn Track in February 1979. This photo was taken at Key Summit of Mts Christina and Lyttle in the Darran Mtns.

During the last ice age, which ended about 14,000 years ago, a huge glacier flowed down the Hollyford Valley and overtopped Key Summit by 500 metres, with ice branches splitting off into the Eglinton and Greenstone Valleys

It may look like a little shove would send this rock on it's way, but unfortunately (or fortunately) it's the size of a small truck.

This view looks across Lake McKellar and down the Greenstone Valley.

I was foiled again by the rain tonight. It was looking like a great evening, then BAM!, right before sunset the rain comes in… I'll just have to consol myself with a nice pic of Key Summit on a perfect winter's morning… Took this a while back on my way back from Milford Sound. A great little walk!
