means it has a larger influence on its environment than its abundance. It plays key role in maintaining the population of other animals in an ecological community.

Keystone species are those whose presence and role in an ecosystem is paramount to the point that they have a disproportionate effect on other organisms within the system. Ironically, though they have a lasting effect on the ecosystem, they are the least in count.

Who knew...they all matter!

A sweet-looking pair of CSX SD40-2s descend the West Slope of Sand Patch Grade on a fine Winter afternoon.

East Beckwith Mountain provides the backdrop in this view across an active beaver pond ringed with aspen in their brilliant fall colors. American beaver (Castor canadensis) are probably the best example of what ecologists call “keystone engineers,” a term used to describe an organism that impacts its environment disproportionately relative to its abundance. In other words, there aren’t a lot of beavers, but those few beavers have a huge impact on the landscape through their construction of dams. These dams alter the shape of valleys, increase the amount of standing water, and impact the abundance plants (such as the aspen) and animals that rely on greater water availability. The beaver dam and lodge for this pond are out of view to the right.

East Beckwith Mountain is part of the West Elk Range, formed principally by volcanic intrusions into sedimentary rock. A bit of fresh snow is visible on the north slopes, hinting that the beautiful fall weather and colors will soon be over.

Keystone Dam is located on the Arkansas River near Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Keystone Lake, above the dam is fed by the Arkansas River and the Cimarron River. Started in 1956 and completed in 1964, it provides electrical power and flood control for the Tulsa area.

A quick run from Otis got them over to Pine Yard for work with no time to squeeze out another shot. Getting their train back together and departing, there was only one more place I needed to get the PRR with the last of the late day light. I did, but barely -- just as the Arcelor Security guy said it was time to leave! The mills of East Chicago, Indiana.

The Norfolk Southern business train runs left-handed on the former N&W Pocahontas Division mainline. The immaculate covered wagons started the morning in Norfolk, Virginia and will tie up for the day in a few hours at the division point of Williamson, West Virginia. The Coca-Cola lettered building is just one of the many landmarks on the famed Elkhorn Grade in McDowell County West Virginia.

Light sleet falls on a chilly December afternoon as the Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit pulls Norfolk Southern train 21M through downtown Harrisburg.

Deep gorge near Valdez Alaska, cut in the slate rock by the Lowe River.

In 2014 heavy snow (typical of the area) and avalanches completely filled this gorge in minutes, luckily no one was on the road at the time. The Lowe River was also blocked, and a new term was coined for the lake that flooded upriver from the 1500 foot long x 100 foot deep avalanche... a 'Damalanche.'
