Kerith is a volcanic crater lake along the Golden Circle

Kerið (occasionally anglicized as Kerith or Kerid) is a volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area in south Iceland, on the popular tourist route known as the Golden Circle. It is one of several crater lakes in the area, known as Iceland's Western Volcanic Zone, which includes the Reykjanes peninsula and the Langjökull Glacier, created as the land moved over a localized hotspot, but it is the one that has the most visually recognizable caldera still intact. The caldera, like the other volcanic rock in the area, is composed of a red (rather than black) volcanic rock. The caldera itself is approximately 55 m (180 ft) deep, 170 m (560 ft) wide, and 270 m (890 ft) across. Kerið’s caldera is one of the three most recognizable volcanic craters because at approximately 3,000 years old, it is only half the age of most of the surrounding volcanic features. The other two are Seyðishólar and Kerhóll.

Kerid that harbours a small green lake. This crater is a result of an old explosion crater in the Grímsnes region. It is now filled with water, creating a lake whose steep circular slopes resemble an ancient amphitheatre. Indeed, once a rock concert was held on a floating raft on the lake, with the audience standing in a circle around it.

It was freezing here! Managed to strike a blizzard the night we arrived.

Keriđ Crater, The Golden Circle, South Iceland

Kerið is a volcanic crater lake in the Grímsnes area of South Iceland.

The Kerid crater in Iceland's Golden Circle is thought to have been formed by a volcano that collapsed. The color of the water is created by the mineral content and the water level is that of the surrounding water table. So rain water won't change the level of it. The people at the lower left and upper back give a hint of the scale.

While most of the crater is steep-walled with little vegetation, one wall is sloped more gently and blanketed with a deep moss, and can be descended fairly easily. The lake itself is fairly shallow (7–14 metres, depending on rainfall and other factors), but due to minerals from the soil, is an opaque and strikingly vivid aquamarine.

The crimson rocks contrast dramatically with their surroundings, particularly the intense azure color of the waters within the crater lake, and the verdant bursts of vegetation.

The reason why the lake is so vividly colored is that of the minerals from the rocks, seeping into and dyeing the water the aquamarine color

Took this amazing panaroma whilst at the top of the Kerid volcano in Iceland. Not many realise that there is an amazing panaramic view of this massive hill which makes the drive of the famous golden circle even more enjoyable.

Kerið, a volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area in south Iceland, is one of the most visually stunning geological wonders in the country. Located along the Golden Circle route, Kerid Crater is an otherworldly volcanic crater lake that is known for its blueish-green waters, surrounded by striking red rock and lush vegetation. Enjoy a scenic stroll around the crater and venture down the trail into the crater itself.

In addition to the bright, sapphire-colored waters, the steep slopes of the caldera’s bowl are almost entirely covered in red volcanic rock.
