Photokeratitis or ultraviolet keratitis is a painful eye condition caused by exposure of insufficiently protected eyes to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from either natural (e.g. intense direct or reflected sunlight) or artificial (e.g. the electric arc during welding) sources. Photokeratitis is akin to a sunburn of the cornea and conjunctiva.

The injury may be prevented by wearing eye protection that blocks most of the ultraviolet radiation, such as welding goggles with the proper filters, a welder's helmet, sunglasses rated for sufficient UV protection, or appropriate snow goggles. The condition is usually managed by removal from the source of ultraviolet radiation, covering the corneas, and administration of pain relief. Photokeratitis is known by a number of different terms including: snow blindness, arc eye, welder's flash, sand eyes, bake eyes, corneal flash burns, flash burns, niphablepsia, or keratoconjunctivitis photoelectrica.

Oil spots on the sensor of Nikon D7000 series cameras became a notable issue shortly after the model's release. These spots were caused by oil from the camera's internal mechanisms, particularly the shutter or mirror assembly, being dispersed onto the sensor. This resulted in visible smudges or dark spots in images, especially noticeable in shots with large areas of sky or uniform backgrounds. The oil spots were more prevalent in new units and tended to decrease over time, though some users experienced persistent problems. While Nikon did not officially issue a recall, they offered cleaning services for affected cameras, and many users resorted to DIY cleaning methods or professional sensor cleaning to address the issue. (Not for me ! several cleaning sessions 2 professionally and they still show. I have owned the D7000, D7100, D7200 and all suffered the same problem to some extent). It ruined my Nikon experience forever.

(crown flower) is a species of Calotropis native to Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, China, Pakistan, Nepal, and tropical Africa.

Calotropis is a poisonous plant. The active principles are uscharin, calotoxin, calactin, and calotropin.[citation needed] The leaves and stem when incised yield thick milky juice. It is used as an arrow poison, cattle poison , rarely for suicide and homicide and mostly an accidental poison.

The milky latex sap of Calotropis gigantea is a known cause of toxic keratoconjunctivitis and reversible vision loss. Crownflower keratitis is a rare condition and is usually the result of accidental ocular exposure to the sap. During the process of making a Hawaiian lei flower necklace, touching the sap and then touching the ocular surface may result in crownflower keratitis. Damage (poisoning) of the cornea endothelium results in corneal stromal edema and decreased visual acuity. Although there is some permanent damage to the corneal endothelium with decreased endothelial cell count and irregular shape, the remaining corneal endothelial cells usually recover with complete resolution of the corneal edema and a return to normal visual acuity. The condition is usually self-limited and resolves faster with topical steroids. The clinical course of this condition suggests that Calotropis is paradoxically relatively nontoxic to corneal epithelium and highly toxic to corneal endothelium. The painless clinical course may be related to anesthetic properties of Calotropis latex and relatively minor epithelial injury.

Pâquerette devant chez la vétérinaire ce matin. C'est son second RV de la semaine, elle a une méchante kératite à un oeil. Mais ça va déjà mieux, je dois "juste" lui mettre de la pommade dans l'oeil 4 x par jour et faire une injection d'anti-inflammatoire (pas facile vu sa maigreur, elle pèse 13 kg contre 35 pour Ciboulette !!!) et ça pendant une dizaine de jours.

Pâquerette in front of the veterinary practice this morning. It's her second appointment of the week, she has a bad keratitis in one eye. But things are already better, I must "only" put ointment in her eye 4 x a day and give an anti-inflammatory injection (not easy given her skinniness, she weighs 13 kg/28 lbs against 35 kg/77 lbs for Ciboulette!! !) and that for ten days.

Hi everyone,

This is Pugsly, who is participating in the 12 months for dogs group this year! He is 8.5 years old and just recently went blind last summer from Pigmentary Keratitis which is quite common in Pugs of all ages. He's learning his way around, and has already had some improvement since he has learned warnings words like "watch out" and listening for our footsteps. It is a little tougher to get photos of him now, especially of him looking at the camera, but he still does great. I've really never met a dog with as much love as Pugsly has for his family...he's different than Champ in that he only loves those who are close to him. He's not too fond of most strangers, but once you get to know him well he just loves you so much and would do anything for you. Pugsly is mostly my sister's dog whereas Champ is mine, but I consider him my own and I take care of him half the time. :P I have to say because of his warm heart, I think if anything I am bonded even more with Pugsly than my own Champ. (dont tell Champ, he doesnt know!) They're just different I suppose...Champ is more of the "love me love me" type Who always wants attention and pugsly is a "love YOU love you" type.

Here is my Zoe Bear on her 14th birthday (well, the shot was taken yesterday). She's my scrappy little pup, having long ago gone through an attack of pancreatitis that nearly took her and then suffering from assorted digestive issues since then. Last year she developed an inflamed tear duct, which is not as visible in this photo as it can be. In that eye she also has what's called pigmentary keratitis, which means that brown pigment is intruding into the white of her eye. That it's not also affecting her iris is because she's on special eye drops, so her vision is not at all affected.

She also has arthritis, which is under control with Dasuquin, which is a canine version of glucosamine/chondroitin. When it had flared up, I had been giving her Metacam, an NSAID, but even though I had been giving her just a teeny, homeopathic dose, it affected her kidneys, so now her latest challenge is that as of a few weeks ago she was diagnosed with early-stage kidney disease. Luckily, she transitioned easily from her former holistic food to a special kidney diet, which she gobbles down even more readily than the other food. The vet says that the food should help balance her electrolytes and help her kidneys work more effectively and efficiently. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, as of last year she has slowed down some, and she doesn't want to fetch the 204 toys whose names she knows the way she used to (or at all, sometimes), but she remains a happy, sweet, friendly pup with a bouncy walk that has led me to add to her nickname My Warden the moniker Scamper Dancer Prancer.

She has greatly appreciated her fans here on Flickr who have sent healing thoughts and love to her over the years to help her through some bad times. She sends everybody licky-lick kisses.

This photo was a collaboration with Patrick - he was testing out some new flooring he bought for studio use, and asked me to hop in the frame. I grabbed my half-sedated pug, posed myself, he fired off two shots with his D700 and his Nikon 85 f/1.4G, just a softbox over me, triggered wirelessly, and said, "Cool." This was meant to be a test shot, but I knew there was something here. So, last night I pulled the file and worked it up.

Why, oh why, do you ask, was the Pug in a CONE OF SHAME? The real question? Why it hasn't just been surgically implanted already. :/

Last year the Walligator had some major work done to the plumbing- he urinates from a permanent incision in his groin now. He is on a prescription diet. But that's not enough for this guy, who is determined to be The World's Most Expensive Pug®.

Two weeks ago the bugger had six teeth removed, common enough in Pugs, even though he just turned five. Two of the teeth were really more just roots that had never erupted through his gums that had to be removed so he wouldn't develop infectious cysts. The same day he had his teeth out, he had eye surgery. Wallace was running the risk of blindness, and so he had eyelid surgery to correct the rubbing on his eyes that was causing him to develop keratitis. The day we shot this he'd had to be sedated to have the stitches from his eyes removed. And he'd been diagnosed with a laceration on one eye, which is serious business for a pug. While sedated he had antibiotics injected into the eye, and ointment rubbed in. Being a very dramatic pug, he won't let you give him eye drops unless he's unconscious.

So, yesterday, he went back for a check up to see if the eye had healed. Luckily, it had. But that's not the bad news.

The bad news is that Wallace had a pea-sized lump on his side I had poked and assessed while I was there with him. And...it's cancerous. It's called a mast-cell tumor.

Tomorrow morning Wallace has to go in for surgery. Again. To get rid of a mast-cell tumor, they have to take a 2cm margin all around it - so this little man is going to have a gigantic hole stitched up on his side tomorrow afternoon. The tumor then has to be sent out for pathology to assess what stage it is. I'm hoping, against all odds, that it's stage 1 cancer. If it's stage 3, it will be very, very grim for this little man I love so very much.

I got my dogs as companions after my husband died, and I'm not remotely prepared to say goodbyes to either of them.

This will make the third month in a row my veterinary expenses meet or exceed my income. I'm pretty sure I don't know how I'll eat until oh, about 2014. Gromit had a guardian angel who paid his emergency bills in January...I'm hoping a sugar daddy will come along and help me with my poor little problematic pug, Wallace. But more than anything, I hope this tumor is just stage 1, and that the "c word" is completely removed tomorrow.

The rain stopped for a while this morning so I decided to take the Peanuts babies to the vet today instead of tomorrow or Saturday. Josh was working & he does the best nail trims. I also wanted Linus' eye checked. Spent a long time with Dr Jon. All 3 of the peanuts kids have feline herpes virus which is quite common in feral kittens. He suspects this is the source of Linus' ongoing eye issues. He has eosinophilic keratitis. Good news is there is no ulceration.He's back on steroid drops and starting lysine supplements. He may need an antiviral drug but he's holding off on that. I know he has trouble with his vision but it clearly does not affect his appetite or ability to access food- he weighs 8 lbs and Lucy & Charlie both weigh 6.9lbs.

Poecilometis gravis

Family: Pentatomidae ( stink bugs , shield bugs )

Suborder: Heteroptera

Order: Hemiptera

I have had several observations of this genus locally in the past. Previous observations have all been of Poecilometis strigatus. However this one is a different species P. gravis. This one looks very similar to the previous observations but there are some minor differences: antennae colour, maybe more even punctation on the hemelytra, a more pronounced black dot on the hemelytra. All are consistent with P. gravis. One quite marked difference is the number of antennae segments; P. gravis has 5 segments whereas P. strigatus has only 4. In the case of this species, P. gravis, the second and third antennal segments are the same length.

It is usually assumed that stink bugs can be merely irritating with their unpleasant smelling spray. However the fluid can be hazardous if it gets in the eye and can cause corneal damage; injuries have been reported.

Zoe Bear and I send love to Mary Anne (latenightowl), whose birthday was yesterday, and to Susie (Say-Cheese), who celebrates her birthday today. I send an extra big hug, and Zoe Bear, of course, sends a bunch of licky-lick kisses.

The above photos were taken yesterday afternoon. You wouldn't know my spunky little pup has two new ailments, would you?

You can't really tell from these photos, but there's some brown in the white of Zoe Bear's left eye. That's caused by a condition called pigmentary keratitis. Some of the pigment is even impinging onto the surface of her cornea, but the veterinary ophthalmologist who saw her this past week confirms that it's not interfering with her vision. I've just started using eye drops twice a day that may retard the spread of the pigmentation or make it recede or even disappear.

Zoe Bear also somehow has developed bronchitis and has a horribly hacking cough. She's on antibiotics and Hycodan, in the hopes the latter will stop the coughing. It's got codeine in it, so she's a bit off her feed, but as long as she's drinking water, I'm not worried, although if she doesn't eat her breakfast she's not getting her anti-arthritis Dasuquin and Metacam (of which she gets only one unit instead of the normal dose of eight units based on her weight, so it's less likely to affect her kidneys). I may have to turn to another way to get those into her.

UPDATE, 9/10--Her cough is much better (not completely gone, but less hacking and less protracted), and she's back to eating almost normally. I am so lucky to have such a spunky little dog!
