Someone went to a lot of trouble to make that heart out of white pebbles, but it sums up nicely how you feel while enjoying the atmosphere and surroundings of the island. This is how people did emojis before smartphones. Taken at a lookout over Kehena Black Sand Beach, Big Island, Hawaii, December 2018

This beach has rough surf and undertow, riptides with no lifeguard.
- Kehena Black Sand Beach
Located in the Big Island’s Puna district [Hawaii].
Info: The sand at this beach is black, made from volcanic ashes as lava flowed into the ocean waters. The beach is well shaded by coconut palms and ironwood trees. Swimming is possible when the water is calm but strong rip currents and undertows occur frequently. The people who go to this beach can be nudists and hippies.
Iceland tour -When lava contacts water, it cools rapidly and shatters into sand and fragmented debris of various size. Much of the debris is small enough to be considered sand. A large lava flow entering an ocean may produce enough lava fragments to build a new black sand beach almost overnight. The famous "black sand" beaches of Hawaii, such as Punaluu Black Sand Beach and Kehena Beach, were created virtually instantaneously by the violent interaction between hot lava and sea water. I met Jesse and Christine that morning. We were all going to see sunrise at Kehena beach. After taking their picture on their camera, I asked if they would sit on the rocks in my picture. I sent them this as a thank you. It was a good morning. Big Island, Hawaii, USA, December 2018

Waimea is a place where stop signs read “Whoa,” instead of “Stop.” This is the home of Kahua Ranch a working sheep and cattle ranch that allows you to learn about the paniolo lifestyle. Here you can explore the scenic landscapes of Waimea by horseback or ATV. Visit Kahua Ranch to fully experience the best of Waimea’s cowboy country.
The soils are commonly the Palapalai series. The Palapalai series consists of deep and very deep, well drained soils that formed from basic volcanic ash over basaltic lava. Palapalai soils are on ash fields and have slopes of 6 to 50 percent. Mean annual rainfall is about 1650 millimeters (65 inches) and mean annual temperature is about 17 degrees C. (63 degrees F.)
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Hydrous, ferrihydritic, isothermic Eutric Hydrudands
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Palapalai soils are on southwest, middle elevation, leeward slopes of Kohala Mountain at elevations from 760 to 1220 meters (2,500 to 4,000 feet). These soils are on all hillslope positions of gently sloping to moderately steep ash fields on lava flows that are 750,000 to 250,000 years old and very steep cinder cones. Slope gradients range from 0 to 50 percent. The soils formed in basic volcanic ash over basaltic lava. The mean annual rainfall ranges from 1,000 to 2,300 millimeters (40 to 90 inches), with most of the rainfall occurring from October through April. The mean annual pan evaporation ranges from 1,020 to 1,780 meters (40 to 70 inches). The mean annual temperature ranges from 16 to 19 degrees C. (60 to 67 degrees F.) The mean summer soil temperature and the mean winter soil temperature differ by less than 6 degrees C. (11 degrees F.)
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Kahua, Kehena, and Waimea soils. Kahua soils have an aquic soil moisture regime. Kehena soils have a mottled horizon and are 51 to 102 centimeters (20 to 40 inches) deep over bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to high runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used principally for livestock grazing. The natural vegetation is kikuyugrass (Pennisetum clandestinum), rattailgrass (Sporobulus indicus), bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) and white clover (Trifolium repens).
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: This series occurs on the leeward slopes of Kohala mountain. It is approximately 8,900 acres in extent. MLRA 160.

We were a little late getting to this beach due to a missed turn. I wish I had gotten down to the beach earlier, because I just loved the stones.
There are only a handful of black sand beaches on the Big Island. Kehena happened to be the one that was only 15 minutes away from where we stayed. Which meant more sleep for me! It’s a nude optional beach. Hard to get down to, having to scramble down some steep rocks, especially in darkness and in the rain, but it was well worth it! The twilight rains slip through and the sun cast its light through the sky. I’m glad I stayed for the “show”. Also, “Adam and Eve” showed up (they didn’t actually come together here), striped down and they each went for a morning swim. Kehena is wildly known for its weekend hippy drum circles but also for is strong spiritual energy that’s encapsulated in this cove. There is a meditative energy as the waves crash in, you sit on the sticky sand and let the waves break through you. Beautiful way to star the day...I think. Personally though, I wouldn't want sand to go in places it shouldn't.
As always, thanks for the views, comments and favs. I know its been months of inactivity, had a lot going on with the passing of one of my dogs, an addition of 3 more dogs!, change in work, and just generally unmotivated.

Kehena beach, big island of Hawaii. Black sands, but pebbles that make it hard to get into and out of the water. But it's NUDE, so who cares?
I had a very busy week last week. Luckily not due to work! My husband and I took a photo workshop on the Big Island. From the jet lag to the early mornings, late evenings, and lots of travel...well, we're still recovering!
These palm trees are near Kehena. We visited here the first morning of the workshop. We loved the warm light on the palms. Since it was bright, I used my Singh-Ray Vari-n-Duo to get a slower shutter speed to slightly blur the movement of the water.
Kehena Beach as it was in Jan 2002.
I came a across a good YouTube video by WYBEACHBUM that represents the atmosphere at the top of the beach.
