The Remarkable Story of The Greatest Tree in New Zealand

The kauri tree, Agathis australis, is New Zealand’s largest and most famous native tree. Located midway between Auckland and the Bay of Islands in the warm north of the country, The Kauri Museum tells some of the stories of this amazing tree.

Far more than a museum of timber, the Museum has stories of the Māori of the north eastern Kaipara, of European pioneers, of foresters and sawmillers, gum diggers and farmers, and of business people, fishers and the families who have made this area their home.

Roots of a kauri tree ("Wainora Kauri") in the Kauaeranga Valley, a recreational area on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand's North Island. These giant, evergreen trees were once very common in the area, but due to intensive logging only a few ones remain.

Tane Mahuta

Largest living Kauri tree in New Zealand

Tāne Mahuta, also called God of the Forest, is a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest kauri known to stand today.

An opportunity to spend time amongst 1,000 year old New Zealand Kauri Trees in the far north.

Puketi is an ancient subtropical kauri forest located between Northland's coastlines. Within its 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) Puketi Forest is a treasure house for native plants and animals, and includes populations of kiwi, kōkako, kākā and lesser short-tailed bats.

Kauri forests are among the most ancient in the world. The antecedents of the kauri appeared during the Jurassic period(between 190 and 135 million years ago). Agathis australis, commonly known as the kauri, is a coniferous tree found north of 38°S in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island. It is the largest (by volume) but not tallest species of tree in New Zealand, standing up to 50 m tall in the emergent layer above the forest's main canopy. The tree has smooth bark and small narrow leaves.

Our Daily Challenge ... arrows

We followed the arrow to Manginangina Kauri Walk. The 500m walk through the forest was amazing! Huge Kauri trees and beautiful fern trees were everywhere we looked.

The Manginangina Scenic Reserve track winds through a beautiful mature stand of kauri, swamp forest and associated vegetation.

Regretably in recent times New Zealand's iconic Agathis australis trees are in trouble from an introduced pathogenic fungus called Phytophthora - left unchecked it has the potential to wipe the species out.

Kauri trees are only found north of Auckland in New Zealand. They are very slow growing and survive for hundreds of years. This one is about 18 years old and still has many years growth to go before it is mature.

Kauri Gum was mined in the old Kauri forests which had been buried in swamps about 45,000 years ago and preserved, though not fossilized. The gum was mostly used for varnish, though some was also used as jewelry. It was very hard and demanding work which was done by both men and women. Mining continued until the 1950's as there was still demand for the resin with manufacturers in England. This picture shows the top of the buried tree ready for mining.

There were over 7000 trees and shrubs planted at Paronella Park. The Kauri trees are huge monuments to the vision that José wove into the landscape.

52m tall, 18m from the ground to the first branch and a girth of 13.8m around.

The statistics cant prepare you for the sight, nor can photographs. This tree has witnessed the entire human history of NZ, and was already a mature tree when Christ was a lad.

I put down my camera and just stared in awe for some time.
