Kauri tree ("Wainora Kauri") in the Kauaeranga Valley, a recreational area on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand's North Island. These giant, evergreen trees were once very common in the area, but due to intensive logging only a few ones remain.

The Remarkable Story of The Greatest Tree in New Zealand

The kauri tree, Agathis australis, is New Zealand’s largest and most famous native tree. Located midway between Auckland and the Bay of Islands in the warm north of the country, The Kauri Museum tells some of the stories of this amazing tree.

Far more than a museum of timber, the Museum has stories of the Māori of the north eastern Kaipara, of European pioneers, of foresters and sawmillers, gum diggers and farmers, and of business people, fishers and the families who have made this area their home.

The mighty Kauri Tree. a straight 18 metres to the first branches, a girth of 7 metres ( some grow up to 14m girth) the bark is like copper plating. They can live for over 1000 years, if the axe hasn't put a stop to that first !

The detail and beauty of kauri bark caught my eye recently.

Kauri tree species are within genus Agathis and native to Australasia and Southeast Asia.

Agathis is one of three extant genera in the family Araucariaceae, alongside Wollemia and Araucaria.

Evergreen and coniferous.

Growing to 50 m or more.

MATAKANA PUBLIC TOILETS

The hulls of upturned boats with recycled kauri are a striking addition to the town’s reputation as an upmarket village. Look for the stained glass porthole windows. The two figures guarding the entrance have featured on many instagram posts

Matakana is a small town in the Rodney Ward of Auckland Council of New Zealand. The Matakana River flows through the town and into Kawau Bay to the south-east.

Matakana's first public building, the Presbyterian School and church, opened in 1864. By 1881, Matakana had about 150 people and most of the bush had been cut. Agriculture replaced it, especially fruit. Matakana Dairy Factory opened in December 1902; the building is now a shop.

Karuri Tiyme was a prominent tattoo artist who recently moved from Breckenridge to Denver.

She was taken from this earth in October 2008. A memorial will be held for her in Denver. If you were tattooed by Kauri, or would like to share a story about her contact corachaos at gmail dot com.

Rest in Peace Kauri, you were loved.

From Wikipedia: Agathis australis, commonly known by its Māori name kauri, is a coniferous tree of Araucariaceae in the genus Agathis, found north of 38°S in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island.Agathis australis can attain heights of 40 to 50 metres and trunk diameters big enough to rival Californian sequoias at over 5 metres. The largest kauri trees did not attain as much height or girth at ground level but contain more timber in their cylindrical trunks than comparable Sequoias with their tapering stems.

Individuals in the same 10 cm diameter class may vary in age by 300 years, and the largest individual on any particular site is often not the oldest. Trees can normally live longer than 600 years. Many individuals probably exceed 1000 years, but there is no conclusive evidence that trees can exceed 2000 years in age. By combining tree ring samples from living kauri, wooden buildings, and preserved swamp wood, a dendrochronology has been created which reaches back 4,500 years, the longest tree ring record of past climate change in the southern hemisphere

The pioneer church at Matakohe next to The Kauri Museum. The first non-denominational church built at Matakohe. This kauri building was also used as the first school in Matakohe and as a place for public meetings.

The small kauri church situated at Church Street, Matakohe was constructed in the year 1868, by its architect and builder Samuel Cooksey. The building was officially opened on Christmas Day (25 December) 1868, with Reverend Thomas Booker presiding over the first service held in the building.

An opportunity to spend time amongst 1,000 year old New Zealand Kauri Trees in the far north.

Puketi is an ancient subtropical kauri forest located between Northland's coastlines. Within its 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) Puketi Forest is a treasure house for native plants and animals, and includes populations of kiwi, kōkako, kākā and lesser short-tailed bats.

Kauri forests are among the most ancient in the world. The antecedents of the kauri appeared during the Jurassic period(between 190 and 135 million years ago). Agathis australis, commonly known as the kauri, is a coniferous tree found north of 38°S in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island. It is the largest (by volume) but not tallest species of tree in New Zealand, standing up to 50 m tall in the emergent layer above the forest's main canopy. The tree has smooth bark and small narrow leaves.
