How did you get interested in conservation? Fishing and camping as a kid and just generally being mesmerized by fish and wildlife and the thrill of being outside. I want to see those opportunities continue during my lifetime and beyond.
What's your favorite species and why? I’m partial to fish—all fish. I’m just downright impressed with all the brilliant ways they make a living in so many different habitat extremes—from caves to reefs to the north slope of Alaska to wetlands to tiny mountain streams and ocean abysses. They benefit people in countless direct and indirect ways yet don’t always come to the forefront of our minds because we’ve got to go out of our way to catch a glimpse of them in their natural habitat. Some of my personal favorites are sheefish, salmon, Colorado humpback chub, the sturgeons, gars, paddlefish,arapaima, Bluefin tuna, Arctic grayling, Dolly Varden char, river herring, American eel, striped bass, ocean sunfish, mahi mahi, groupers, Lake Malawi cichlids…I could go on...
What's your favorite thing about working for FWS? Getting out in the field with our fisheries and habitat staff and partners to document the science and conservation they do on the ground and then brainstorming with other communicators about how to most effectively tell those stories.
If you could have one incredible animal adaptation, what would it be? The ability to freeze and thaw or prevent freezing. Some fish and other critters have this superpower thanks to “antifreeze” proteins. I’m stuck wearing a jacket and long undies and having my fingers go numb.
Took these pictures a while back but am just now getting around to uploading them ^^;
