Sonepur Mela is one of Asias largest cattle fairs and is held in the Indian state of Bihar. The fair starts on Karthik Purnima (Kartika Poornima, the full moon day) in November and lasts for around a month. It begins on the full moon day as a religious Hindu festival. Thousands of pilgrims make offerings and take a ritual bath in Gandak river, near its confluence with the Ganges. Numerous tantriks practise black magic to remove the evil energies from the pilgrims and resolve their problems. There are also many holy men (sadhus) and religious gurus with followers in their own camps, praying, chanting and meditating. Spiritual activities are the main point of the fair for a couple of days. When all pilgrims are gone back to their towns and villages the religious event transforms itself into a large fair trade and amusement park which continues for about a month.

Pilgrims at the Pushkar Mela, India,

During full moon in November, (Kartik Purnima) pilgrims from all over India participate in the Pushkar Mela. They bathe in Pushkar lake right in the dessert up there in the north of Rajasthan to get rid of their karma. They are being blessed by a priest, a pujari. A famous temple dedicated to Lord Brahma ब्रह्मा is to be found here. It was here according to mythology where God Brahma dropped three leaves which later on became the lake.

November 2007. The annual Pushkar mela (fair) will last for about a week. This is the time when the small holy town, set at the border of the desert in the Western State of Rajasthan sees its population grow to hundreds of thousands within days. The camel and cattle fair also attracts pilgrims who come to visit the Brahma Temple and bathe in the holy Pushkar lake for the Karthik Purnima (full moon).

The small boats that you can see in the rivers are floated on Kartika Purnima(full moon) day to commemorate Bali Jatra.

About Bali Yatra

Bali Yatra or Bali Jatra a festival commemorates Odisha's (Orissa) ancient maritime legacy.

It is held in the month of Kartik which comes around the end of October and November. The scientific cause of starting voyage on Kartika Purnima(Full Moon day) is to take advantage of the favorable wind blowing during this time of the year.

Traders of Odisha used to venture on a journey to distant lands namely the islands of Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Sri Lanka for trade. To celebrate the glory of the ancient times, the people in Cuttack as well as in the rest of Odisha float small boats made of cork, colored paper and banana tree barks in the river and water tanks.

The festival/fair started during ancient times when people used to come to see off and welcome their relatives going on the journey and on their return. Shops used to come up to cater to their needs.

The fair is held on the banks of the river Mahanadi in Cuttack
