TheCrusader Castle of Karak

It stands 1000 meters above the Dead Sea ,of which one sees a splendid view .

It was a strategic outpost in the communication network that went from Aqaba to Turkey .

Karak was located along the caravan routes that connected

Egypt to Syria in biblical Times .

It is reported in the famous Madaba mosaic map .

In the 12th century the castle was built by king Crusader Baldwin .

Karak became the capital of TransJordan and was a rich city

thanks to the duties imposed on merchants . In 1923 the Ottomans took possession on the castle ,after local conflicts had forced the Christians of Karak to more to Madaba .

The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were probably situate near the town of Karak .

Karak - continuing the King's Highway to the city of Karak, known for his famous Crusader castle

Karak, once a part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, lies 140 km to the south of Amman on the King's Highway. An ancient Crusader stronghold, it is situated on a hill top about 1000 meters above sea level and is surrounded on three sides by a valley; Karak commands a magnificent view of the Dead Sea. A city of about 20.000 people has been built up around the castle and continues to boast a number of restored 19th century Ottoman buildings

PLEASE, no multi invitations, glitters or self promotion in your comments. My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know. Thanks

Karak has been a prized possession of a number of civilizations. It lies on the ancient caravan routes that used to connect Egypt to Syria and its commanding position almost 1000 meters above the Dead Sea Valley made it a strategic asset of great importance. The city was used by the Greeks and Romans.

But it was not until the arrival of the Crusaders in the 12th century that Karak reached its full splendour. The Crusader King Baldwin I of Jerusalem had the castle built in 1132 AD. Karak formed part of a great line of Crusader castles stretching from Aqaba to Turkey.

Even with its impressive defensive fortifications, Karak could not hold out against the forces of Saladin. After the governor of Karak, Reynaud De Chatillon, broke several truces with Saladin, the Muslim leader responded with a massive bombardment of Karak. De Chatillon, who was captured and executed by Saladin in 1187 AD, was known for throwing his captives over the battlements into the valley 450 m below and to ensure he prolonged their agony, he would encase the victims' heads in wooden boxes so they wouldn't loose consciousness before hitting the bottom.

The universe of Warhammer Fantasy not so popular among the LEGO comunity, like, for example, Middle-Earth, but it gives a lot of inspiration for me. Everyone knows Erebor, and I want to show you my vision of equally famous Dwarf fortress.

Karak Kadrin, known also as Slayers Keep is a Dwarf stronghold which guards Peak Pass, an important trading route which runs through the Worlds Edge Mountains from the distant east to the Old World. A mighty and well-known kingdom, Karak Kadrin benefits from its position, having become both a wealthy trading center and the largest, most populous and most powerful Dwarf kingdom in the Pass. Despite being besieged countless times, Karak Kadrin has never fallen. Its impregnability is probably due to the fact it has become the home of the feared Dwarven Slayers, who are naturally attracted to such a contested place. On account of this, Karak Kadrin is commonly known as "Slayer Keep", and is an important centre for the worship of Grimnir, the Dwarf Ancestor God epitomizing fearlessness and fighting spirit.

You may think that this MOC is formulaic, and may be you will be right, but I think such type of fortress fits the best for the Dwarves.

Once I've built Dwarvish Gates ( www.flickr.com/photos/dwalinforkbeard/26148441875/in/date... ), and since that times I got a little more parts but still not enough. When I was on the half of the way, I realized that I have no parts at all to finish it. So I borrowed parts all over the country. Anyway, the result is not the same, I've had in my mind. I know about weaknesses of this MOC and maybe in future I can show better version. May be it will be Karaz-a-Karak, who knows?

Hope you like it.

View from Jordan. Palestine in the background

The old water levels are well visible. The lake is loosing nearly a meter per year.

The tripod was not perfectly straight, and I probably used too wide a focal length, hence the sinusoidal horizon, that I was unable to fix without cutting part of the bay ( and reconstructing too much desert :-). Will try again! but I share this, because the place is beautiful!
