This is a zoomed in view taken from McArthur Island and looking along the river toward Tranquille Farms. I've had questions before from other shots I've taken about the rock bluff. I have determined that it is volcanic rock but finding a name for it has not been as easy as one might imagine. I believe it may be called Battle Bluff.

The best part of a fresh snowfall is how it makes the trees look.

Riverside Park

Kamloops, BC

This is a beach and swimming area in the summer. In the winter time the only swimmers are ducks, Canada geese and wild trumpeter swans.

Paul Lake

Kamloops, B.C.

There's a lake beneath that smooth expanse of snow. I've never seen the lake quite like this before. This part of the lake is just a narrow tip of it. It amused me how on both sides there were ramps down to docks which presumably were buried amid ice and snow. Right in the centre of the shot is a row of colourful canoes barely visible in the white stuff.

Rabbit Island,

Kamloops, B.C.

After a bit of digging, I found the name of this island. It isn't named on most maps. An acquaintance and long time resident of Kamloops called it Rabbit Island. I googled that and it seems to be the popular name for it though many call it Deer Island too.

I could have watched the deer forever this day and maybe I'd still be there were it not for the cold. Kind of silly perhaps since I could hardly see them with the naked eye from my spot across the river. I had to watch them through the telephoto lens. There's just something about fog though that makes things seem special and wrapped in an enchantment. :-)

At first I couldn't quite believe my eyes because the way the light hit the trees, I thought they were in blossom. Then I realized they still bore the dead leaves from last year.

When I first photographed this place last year I wondered if the cabin and a couple of other small huts were in use as outbuildings for the ranch they are on. Now I am pretty sure they are not. It's good to see though that they have received some love over the years as they are still in relatively good shape considering their apparent age.

Thompson River

Kamloops, B.C.

This is a late afternoon shot taken from McArthur Island and looking along the mainly frozen river toward downtown Kamloops.

A couple of days before this I had been at roughly the same place on the island and witnessed the amazing sight (amazing to me anyway) of a coyote running very quickly down the middle of the frozen river.

What a difference a few days make. It's been quite warm all week (+5 C high, -2 C low) and most of the snow has gone and the river ice melted. Alas, it's not an early spring though. In a few days the temperatures will return to normal ones for January and there will be many snowy days.

Birds flyin' high, you know how I feel

Sun in the sky, you know how I feel

Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me.

Yeah, it's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me, ooooooooh...

And I'm feelin' good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The birds flying high in this shot triggered the song for me. I love this old Nina Simone song. Despite the fact that it's sunset here and not dawn, it really seemed to fit this scene. And, besides, the dawn of the song is probably a metaphorical one anyway.
I was drawn to the many shades of green in this view. And they got me thinking of how different greens feel. For example the rich green of the foreground grass and overhanging leaves feel cool. Unlike the pale, muted green of the grasses and sagebrush on the hillside which bear the stamp of the hot sun.
The river ice comes and goes this winter. For a while at the end of January it was almost all gone but then it got cold again. I hope it goes soon. I'm sick of winter, pretty as it may be to photograph.
I don't know if this was ever a homestead but I like to think it was. I've tried to find to some history on the place but to no avail. All I know is that it and two old out buildings are located on the land of a small working ranch with a large modern house and barn.
It's wonderful
Everywhere, so white
The river has frozen over
Not a soul on the ice
Only me skating fast
I'm speeding past trees
Leaving little lines in the ice
~~~ Kate Bush

Who else remembers the weird but wonderfulness of Kate Bush? I loved "Wuthering Heights" but "Under Ice" was good too. I was reminded of it as I walked along the river a couple of weeks ago and got this glimpse of the ice.

I had nearly forgotten about the theme for this week as I haven't had any time for photography for quite a while, until today that is. I was at one of my favourite places for taking photos when I spotted this ramp used for loading livestock in and out of a big corral at a ranch.

Best viewed large. :-)

Thompson River,

This was how it looked two weeks ago on this stretch of the river bank. I'm not sure if it is all green now. I love how it looked in the reflection.

Until this year I think I would have said that spring was my least favourite season. I'm not entirely sure why but I think maybe I hadn't really ever done much photography in the spring for some reason. I did this year though and I loved it!

In these days when my photo taking opportunities are few and limited to a few locations close to my home, I realize that I utilize these locations a lot even in the best of times. So I've decided to do a little project where I choose 3 or 4 locations, pick an exact spot from which to shoot and then return every month or two throughout a whole year.

The image below which is more or less from the same spot was taken in February.

Along Paul Lake Road,

Kamloops, B.C.

Paul Lake is a drive of 15 - 20 minutes out of Kamloops up into some hills. Since it's at a higher elevation, I wasn't at all surprised to find snow still on the hilltops.

I don't know what kind of trees these two are but they were an impressive sight, rising so high above the surrounding pines and firs.

Oh, oh, telephone line,

Give me some time,

I'm living in twilight

--- Electric Light Orchestra

That song popped into my head as I looked at these lines. I know it's unpopular to have utility poles and lines in photos but I figured if you made the photo -about- the lines... :-)

Suddenly I started to wonder if these were actually telephone lines. Maybe they were electric lines. So I Googled and found -- Typically, utility poles have 2 or 3 lines up at the top which are electric lines then down lower there is a cable television line and the bottom most line is the phone line!

For those of you who, like me, enjoy absolutely useless little bits of information -- you're welcome!

Looking across Running Horse Ranch

toward the Thompson River valley,

Kamloops, B.C.

The North Thompson river comes in at the left side of this shot and the South Thompson cuts in across the right. The confluence of the rivers is at Kamloops (which comes from the Secwepemc word Tk’emlúps, meaning "where the rivers meet" ).

The two mountains which dominate the landscape down in the city don't look as big from up here. The distinctive loose shale face of Mount Paul is right in the middle of the shot and to its right, joined by a grassy saddle-shaped plateau is Mount Peter (elevation approx. 3650').

Paul Lake

Kamloops, B.C.

I was not surprised to see patches of snow along the shore or on hilltops, as the lake is at a higher elevation than the city. However, I hadn't expected to see so much ice still on the lake. This is a shot that came out alright even though it was pouring rain.

I was going to make up some artsy title for this picture then I thought... no, it's all about these magnificent trees. I took an obsessive number of pictures of them today but they were just so gorgeous.

What a beautiful day it was, too. I actually had my gloves off for a bit while shooting. It was up to -5 C and it is supposed to get up above zero on Tuesday! Woohoo!

I really like this fence but it's Mt Peter and Mt Paul in the background which are the cherry on top.

Happy Fence Friday!

This is the third shot I have posted of this wonderful old car, a 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook. The car may be old and rusted but it's not forgotten for it is placed on a leveled pad at the end of a driveway, marking the house address at the road (#3303 Shuswap Road).

A mural in downtown Kamloops BC that caught my eye.

4 of 6.

This artwork is by Zach Abney on the wall of the Paramount Theatre in downtown Kamloops.

It's not Abney's first mural in Kamloops. He painted a jazz saxophonist behind a building off Fourth Avenue.

He also is a painter of more usual sized pieces, working in acrylics out of a studio downtown.

I love this tree. I must do as I've shot it several times. I first noticed the nest in it in early March last year and called the photo the creative title of "Bird's Nest". I suspected it must be an eagle's nest but was not sure until June when I saw two adult eagles sitting half way out on the branch, keeping a watchful eye toward the nest. This would have been about the time the eaglets would be almost ready to start flying.

So this photo is upgraded from "Bird's Nest" to the much cooler title of "The Aerie". :-)

And don't it feel good!

Walking around McArthur Island, my favourite green space in town, I rounded a corner and saw this beautiful scene. And it did feel good! :-)

incautious in the dark river

Winter’s ghost walks

~~~~ Tamara Rendell, Mystical Tides
I am not familiar with this author and came upon this quote by chance. It seemed to me to work for this image of a dark river transitioning from autumn to winter.
This is our most recent snowfall, about 13 cm, sitting atop a park bench. The lengthwise "slats" are where the slats in the bench are and the snow drops through. The two widthwise ridges are at the solid parts of the bench but why they curve upward and look so solid, I have no idea. I don't understand the physics of it. Or perhaps it's magic. But I'm not schooled in that either. :-)
Along the Rivers Trail
McArthur Island
Kamloops, BC
You may be wondering what the view from here is *of* ? The answer is "over there" of course!
About a month ago the flood warning came off the rivers and we were told they had peaked, It wasn't true though due to the great amount of rainfall we have had in June and July.
The shot below taken in December is from the same angle and approximate position though the focal length is quite different. I put it in to try and show how much higher the bridge looked last winter.
North Thompson River
Kamloops, BC
The North Thompson always has more ice than the South which, of course, makes sense. It's starting to have a lot more open water than it did in January and, while it doesn't exactly feel like spring is just around the corner, at least there is a glimmer of hope now.
This was shot very close to my red winged blackbird that I said was in a marsh. I tend to call wetlands that have reeds and bulrushes "marsh" and places with trees "swamp". I have read about the four types of wetlands and it seems to be a judgment call with no hard and fast rules. I loved this place for the intensely green reflections.
Dairy Road,
Kamloops, B.C.
I took a little drive out to a semi-rural area a bit out of town. Though it wasn't that far, only about a 15 minute drive, it seemed like they'd had a -lot- more snow there. The trees looked fantastic and I was amused by the two cars still half-buried in snow since it had been several days since the last snowfall.
Frozen Thompson River
Kamloops, B.C.
I was going to post another bleak monochrome shot taken along the ice and snow covered river. But then I looked at this and went for the positives. It's supposed to start warming up to more seasonal temperatures and the snow will start to melt. The problem is that February was one of the coldest and snowiest Februaries in the historical records and the snow just kept mounting up. I'm looking forward to going on some of the back roads where I like to take pictures once the snow melts.
This is another view of the snow-dusted hills on the other side of the river. Actually, this may have started out to be a view of the hills but in the end what captured my attention and camera was the wonderful wild grass, sagebrush and bushes of the foreground.
Cross country ski trails,
Stake Lake,
Kamloops, B.C.
I've never given any thought to taking up cross country skiing. Until today. It was so damn beautiful here. The trails loop around right through the woods and some across frozen lakes. On a sunny day like this, it would be magic.
Riverside Park,
Kamloops, B.C.
A fresh snowfall and sunshine -- what a lovely combination for wonderful shadows. And one of the best things about fresh snow is unbroken expanses or just a narrow track of foot prints.
“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
About a week ago I posted a photo where I said it would look different with more snow. Then I promised to take another photo when we got another snowfall. Well the snow came and I tried today but first a train blocked the view and then a series of things foiled my plans. However I did get this photo from almost the same place just looking upstream instead of downstream,. How it looked two weeks ago is shown below,.
Which do you like best?
I just love the 'big skies' we get in Kamloops, the clouds can be so beautiful!
