My poor boy has been really sick the last few weeks. Thankfully, he is starting to feel better and we were able to go for a short walk yesterday.
Kakashi received a new festive walking jacket for Christmas and could not wait to try it out - even though it was drizzling a bit. It will be our 19th Christmas together. We love him so much.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours especially your feline friends!
We purchased a Beautyrest bed for Kakashi as a Valentine's Day present. It has an orthopedic memory foam and pressure relieving support. Great for an old guy. He just loves it. I couldn't believe that Beautyrest makes beds for pets.
For the past year, Kakashi has had a cancerous lesion on his right lip/mouth area. Because of his age (almost 20 years old), removing it is not an option. It doesn't seem to bother him that much and he is eating and drinking a tremendous amount (as usual). However, because of its large size, Kakashi continues to scratch, rub and tries desperately to remove it himself. We have tried numerous Elizabethan collars but he figures out how to remove them. When he was out on the back deck lounge chair, I was wrapping his neck area in a shirt or towel to prevent him from rubbing the area. I then ordered some bandanas, and he just loves them! He won't go outside without one and often wants them on in the house. Who knew bandanas would be the answer.

Kakashi dolls depicting the Shikoku Island pilgrims (O-Henro-san), Kamiyama, Japan. The Henro is a 88 temple pilgrimage, one ofo the oldest in the world, honoring the Buddist monk, Kukai. It is traditionally done on foot, circumnavigating 1200 km of Shikoku Island, taking 30-60 days. The pilgrims wear white outfits, a stole, conical grass hats and carry staffs. Every time I visit Shikoku Island I never fail to see many O-Henro-san.

Up the road from the Nagoro Doll village on the Sugoutani River there is a pretty retaurant and onsen (spa) called Iyashi no Onsenkyo nestled in the mountains where we stopped for a meal. I was admiring the fall foliage through the large windows and noticed a group of 3 kakashi dining on a balcony above the restaurant. The dolls are a different style from the Nagoro Doll Village dolls.

"Kakashi is the Japanese word for scarecrow. Japanese farmers believed that Keubiko, the Shinto god of knowledge and agriculture, went into their kakashi in the spring.
The kakashi helped Keubiko gather knowledge. The kakashi watched over fields and saw everything. When birds landed on them, they whispered their secrets to Keubiko.
After the autumn harvest, the kakashi were taken down and stacked in a pile. The pile was set on fire and Keubiko was released. He returned to his home in the mountains to wait for the next spring.
Kakashi has a traditional へのへのもへじ (henohenomoheji) scarecrow face. Japanese hiragana characters へのへのもへじ are used to create the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and outline of the face. This is another tradition going back over a hundred years. "
Apparently there is a scarecrow crawl in Steveston this year. I will have to look into getting more information about that as I do rather like scarecrows.
