Ain’t nothin but a G Thang. Last night I went out to see the new Godzilla Minus One film, and holy smokes, was it good! I’ve seen my share of both good and bad Godzilla movies, this one definitely being one of the best. I remember growing up watching the lovable, kid-friendly, semi-cute, hero version of Godzilla in movies like Godzilla On Monster Island, which set me up for a shock when I eventually watched the original, black and white Godzilla classic feature from 1954, where the not-so-jolly green giant was an embodiment of pure, unadulterated evil and destruction, and was a metaphor for the atom bomb. Well, this one returns to the spirit of that original classic, but with a modern day makeover. It was good to see a decent story line and plot, which at points had me wanting to get up out of my seat and cheer, and the special effects and set design were fantastic. Some of the pacing felt a little slow at times, but it was worth the steady, climactic build up, instead of the nonstop barrage of action that so many movies of this type seem to resort to. If you’re looking for a very good Kaiju movie, this is definitely one to see on the BIG screen!
