Incoming wave at dawn on the west coast of New Zealand.
I've created a new gallery of my favourite seascapes on my website. Most of the images have received significant make-overs in the form of my latest processing techniques developed over the past 2 years.

Motukiekie Beach is a fantastic location on the West Coast of New Zealand.
After a "Blazing Kaikoura" sunrise on the east coast I headed over to the West Coast for sunset.
This spot is only accessible at low tide and even during the very low tide on this particular evening the swell would regularly wash over this scene. This regular water movement however provided another layer to the seastack / starfish combination that the area is famous for!
The growing popularity of Motukiekie for serious landscape photographers is largely off the back of some fantastic images created by Kah Kit Yoong here a couple of years ago. If you haven't already make sure you check out his Flickr stream at www.flickr.com/photos/kahkityoong/ - you won't regret it!
The above image was taken well after the sun had set, providing a wonderful atmosphere including the sea mist in the background. My legs were soaked from the numerous swells and on the walk back down the beach it started to rain. This just added to the adventure at a remarkable location!
As always I would love to hear any thoughts / comments that you may have.

2100 miles.
5 days.
That was our whirlwind trip in a nutshell as Kendra and I drove up through Oregon and Washington to attend the 2010 ICP Awards in Seattle. This photo contest is held every other year by Art Wolfe and focuses on the power of photography to help conservation.
Along the way, we stopped for sunset and sunrise in Bandon along the southern Oregon coast. We scouted a few locations on our way to Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda before getting to our friend little m's house just north of Seattle on Friday.
The Burke Museum in Seattle kicked off the three month showing of the winning images with bang. Wine, artisan sandwiches (yum), and an amazing display of photography were on hand. Meeting Art Wolfe was a highlight as was the after party organized by Jon Cornforth. Sean Bagshaw and David Cobb were in attendance, two members of Photo Cascadia, as were Kah Kit Yoong and Todd Mintz. Seattle's own, Dene Miles and Aaron Reed, also joined in on the fun.
Here is an image from our first stop in Bandon. The striking sea stacks located here has always called to me, and although the sunset was devoid of color, I was still happy just to experience them. I tried to emphasis their shapes with silhouettes by waiting for the sun to get low enough in the sky to create better contrast. I look forward to my next trip here and hopefully I'll have more time, more days, and more images to share.

My Gannet Colony shot commended in Landscape category. I don't think I ever uploaded this B&W shot to Flickr...
Congrats to Kah Kit Yoong for winning this category!

“Fanning the Flames” Each year I try to shoot a variety of intimate portraits as well as grand scenes for the Venice Carnevale. No prizes for guessing which category this one falls into. The profile view shows how impressive Sophie’s head dress is. So I found a photographer who truly blows my mind and this image is a direct result of having read his article on looking for the intimate landscape as opposed to just shooting the more obvious wide view all the time.
I love the fact that this could be a totally unique image. Patterns in the sand that have been washed away with the tide, only existing on my memory card. It's a little ironic actually, because I'm constantly on the lookout for the "lone tree" and I finally find one in the last place I expected to see it ;)
To anyone looking for inspiration for landscape imagery, you should definitely check out Kah Kit Yoong.

Spent Easter at the Blue Mountains. I rarely have photos of myself taken but this is what I look like when shooting. I was totally drenched Easter Sunday but the light for forest scenes perfect.

I'm proud to announce Magic Hour Travelscapes first workshops. The first will be 4 nights based in Hobart. The second workshop will take advantage of the tulip festival in Wynyard and also include seascapes of the northern Tasmania coast. The two workshops will run back to back so those in Hobart can book both as an extension. A detailed sheet can be provided to those interested by contacting me at kahkityoong@magichourtravelscapes.com
At forty degrees latitude, Tasmania’s unique wilderness and purity of light has inspired nature photographers for generations. Although just a short flight from Melbourne or Sydney, the island state of Tasmania feels like the edge of the world. Here, we will spend four nights in Hobart as a base for exploring the unique rocky landscape of Mount Wellington, the lush rainforest and waterfalls in Mount Field National Park, and the dramatic coastline of the Tasman Peninsula.
The Hobart workshop is limited to 4-8 participants.
Cost AUD$ 900 (tuition only)
I'm pleased to announce a workshop based in the Blue Mountains next month. The focus will be on photo critique, discussion about in-the-field technique and post-capture workflow. I'll be taking participants through my workflow using images they take from the beautiful landscapes of the Blue Mountains. I have 1 or 2 spaces left subject to confirmation from people who have contacted me privately.

After 10 days on the road, Arild, Stian and I have wrapped up our grand tour of Lofoten. We had a terrific group of ten photographers joining us from Australia, Switzerland, France, Hong Kong, UAE and Canada. There was rain, snow, numerous periods of great light and a few times the night sky cleared sufficiently to witness awesome aurora displays. This was from our final shoot; thanks to Arild for the secret location. I think this mountain landscape makes a good companion piece to the intimate “Cold as Ice” posted a couple of days ago.
