Kabibe and construction of her Victorian/steampunk outfit stage one. For her undergarments, I just made a little slip thingy out of a stocking. I can always go back and make bloomers and proper undergarments later, but I don't really think they are necessary. I like this design, and I'm thinking of making her a swimsuit in the same way.
Hasani is the son of Oscar Jonesy and Monifa, a "teen" mom at age 10, who abandoned him at birth, so he was brought up by staff, whose job it was to train him in gorilla ways until he was old enough to join the gorilla "troop" safely.
. . . This included exercises to strengthen him so that he could hold onto the hair on the back of an adult gorilla (usually the bio mother) while being carried around for at least the first year.. Bawang, who had raised 3 other young ones of her own came daily to watch him through the barrier and she was chosen as the surrogate mother. mImg_4134ps

Kabibe, a baby gorilla in the San Francisco Zoo's gorilla troop, was born on July 17, 2013, underweight, rejected by her bio mother, and needed 24-hr care until she was about 5-6 months old. Sheltered at first, she became an adventurous explorer and acrobat with a real zest for life.
-- These are photos I posted in 2014 (at Facebook) of this joyful little gal, through the last visit on Oct, 10, and there are also two videoclips from that day. She died Nov. 7 when her usual energetic sprints involved a closing hydraulic door in the night quarters.
(These are photos that are mainly great memories rather than technically-good photos.)

Oscar Jonesy, the Silverback at the San Francisco Zoo, is the father of both Hasani and Kabibe. They were both abandoned by their bio mothers at birth and had to be brought up by the staff, with 24-hour post-natal care and training (as described in the last photo).
At 5 months, for each, Bawang, who loves young ones, took over. She'd brought up three of her own children earlier.

One of the youngest members of the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve at the San Francisco Zoo died Friday in what staff described as a "tragic accident," a spokeswoman said.
Staff was carrying out its nightly post-closing routine of moving animals into their night quarters when the gorilla, named Kabibe, unexpectedly darted under a closing hydraulic door, said spokeswoman Abbigail Tuller.
Tuller said the death was particularly difficult for zoo staff who provided 24-hour postnatal car for Kabibe until she was 6 months old.
This kind of accident is extremely rare, she said.
Officials said the zoo is investigating how and why this accident happened, and will review zoo policies, procedures and training in the days ahead to see if changes are necessary.
Kabibe, whose name means "little lady" in Swahili, was born on July 17, 2013 to parents Nneka, 16, and Oscar Jonesy, 33, according to zoo officials. When she was 6 months old, zoo staff gradually introduced her to the gorilla troop, beginning with the family matriarch, Kabibe's grandmother, Bawang, 34.
Tuller said Bawang and Kabibe bonded instantly and had been inseparable ever since. Officials described Kabibe as a "beloved" member of the zoo family who brought "great joy" to the lives of the gorilla troop.
"Some animal deaths are more difficult to process than others, and this tragedy has struck us all in the deepest way imaginable," San Francisco Zoo executive director Tanya Peterson said in a statement.
Peterson urged the public to be patient as the gorilla family and zoo staff mourn the loss of the gorilla.
The Jones Family Gorilla Preserve will remain open to the public, but officials said it may be closed periodically in the days ahead as the need arises.

Flickr left out the last full minute of the video for some reason.
We visited the zoo on the spur of the moment Oct 10, with only pocket cameras, and were lucky to see both Kabibe in constant motion and in play with her older brother Hasani (on a 2nd, shorter video).
Underweight when born she developed into a robust, acrobatic, smart and mischievous explorer-child.
Her delight in exploring and just living was delightful to see, and I wish that we could have seen her grow up.
The writing on the window is with food or dessert pieces.

Monifa, now almost 16 was a gorilla "teen" at age 10 when she had Hasani and didn't know what to do with him, not having seen an infant being reared before, they say.
She's a loner in the group, having been brought in later to breed with Oscar Jonesy, the Silverback. I think Monifa and Bawang's daughter Nneka (bio mother to Kabibe) were closer when younger, but Nneka tends to sit around with mom Bawang and sort of watches over and plays with Hasani (humoring him). mImg_4152psrc
