James Koval Bell was truly one of a kind. He left school at a very tender age because his family needed the boy's wages. At Saint John NB he experienced his first strike and became a union spokesman at the callow age of 14. That experience launched Jim on his lifelong role as a union spokesman.

J K Bell was definitely on the left wing of the union movement and it sometimes got him in trouble. As a young activist he was the subject of a deliberate hit-and-run in Montreal that nearly killed him and left Jim with physical damage that endured the rest of his life. He was a leftist who walked the talk, a man who would almost literally give the shirt off his back to someone down on his luck. He managed both to be a fearless representative of working people and someone whose core warmth, friendliness and good humour never wavered.

JK represented the Marine Workers Federation for decades and once threw a scare into Joe Morris in a close race for the presidency of the Canadian Labour Congress.

My father became active in the Nova Scotia labour movement in the early-mid 1950s. JK and HJ became fast and lifelong friends, having not just union convictions in common but shared enthusiasm for the products of rum and scotch distillers.

I count myself lucky to have known JK.
