Juniperus brevifolia, a juniper species endemic to the Azores, grows near Lagoa do Capitão on the island of Pico. This juniper is endangered due to habitat loss throughout the archipelago. At Lagoa do Capitão, the tree's twisted, branching form adds a magical atmosphere to area around the lake. The small, shallow lake fills a sag along a northwest-southeast trending fault in the São Roque-Piedade Volcanic Complex on Pico's eastern end.
Visit to Grand Canyon south rim was spectacular, but it was made even more interesting with a few lifer bird sightings. Juniper Titmouse!

As I was shooting the image from my last post, I kept noticing this beautiful Juniper tree just about 40 feet away from where I was standing. I wanted to go shoot it, but I also didn't want to lose my spot I had claimed. I pulled out the 70-200 and grabbed a couple shots from where I was standing during twilight, but I wasn't extremely satisfied with the outcomes. After the sun had come above the horizon and I was done with my image of the canyon, I looked back at this Juniper and noticed there was some beautiful warm light hitting it. I ran over to the tree and set up to capture a few images of it. I'm sure this tree has been shot a handful of times, but I'm happy about the simplicity of this image. The soft morning light helped make it all come together as well.

A solitary juniper tree with a distinctive zig zag trunk stands watch alone atop a high cliff overlooking the sea near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Most of my life I have overlooked birds, especially small ones. Then I got serious about photography. Photography gives us the unique ability to see small things in a way we never have able to before. Now I see these small birds in their exquisite detail and I can appreciate their tiny lives and their natural perfection. One can see the tiny patterns of the way their feathers lay. The rough durable feet with their tiny effective claws. The perfection of nature is so well displayed in a closeup photograph of a creature and the image can be studied and lingered over. The animal is seen in such a way that is impossible to see with just casual observation. This why I fell in love with photography, especially of wildlife. The photo offers a glimpse of life we normally don't see, an enhancement, an amplification that allows us to truly see something, maybe for the first time. This Titmouse is just as exquisite and perfect as a bald eagle. The perfection of nature and evolution is everywhere around us and a photograph captures the moment of time and perfection for us to view in a way we hardly ever can otherwise.

Not a quality shot but a lifer for me. Every time I picked up the camera and pointed it towards the bird, it flew. Almost as hard to photograph as a belted kingfisher!

One of the junipers Edward Weston photographed in 1937; though when I came upon it, I just thought it was a cool looking tree. I'd already trekked a mile with the 30# 8x10 kit on my back, made two exposures, then traded it for the R6m2 for exploring higher terrain. I found this after a very indirect 1 ¼ miles of trekking.
Another pen and ink sketch as i plan my upcoming story. Flutter standing on a chair so she can wear a huge victorian dress. The sketches may end up being scenes or just a step in the process of imagining the story and world they are in.
The juniper tree has always been a kind of magical evergreen to me. It's berries can be used to spice meet, make a kind of wild yeast, and provide antioxidants and vitamins.
A Juniper bush embedded in the granite shores of Maine has a good view of morning's light in the Gulf of Maine, near Ogunquit, ME, October 19, 2023.
Joshua Trees are the stars at California's Joshua Tree National Park, but other trees make a good showing too. This Juniper is a standout that has planted itself firmly in the rocks and is well weathered.

500 hundred years of this living being, of this survivor, this wind guardian. El Sabinar in El Hierro island is an amazing place.
Older than you and me, the tree met the last indigenous civilization of the island and saw the first Columbus trip to the unknown. Old and beautiful.
One of the most beautiful and remote corners of the Planet Earth.

Callophrys gryneus. Searight Park in Austin was full of juniper hairstreaks today. This one is nectaring an a small flower on a tree I couldn't identify.
We will always miss Juniper. She was a very wild and free spirit. She went missing in 2016- she was 9 years old. I think of her so often. Juniper was one of Holly the 1st kittens.
As you can see, Ken & I have had many cats in our lives, and we miss them ALL! I got bogged down looking back through SO many photos, and these are just a few. All loved dearly, and all missed to this day.

Log cabin at the community of Juniper, in Idaho along I-84 just north of the Utah state line in Idaho.
Check out the cut marks on the logs.
You wouldn't know it from this view, but this hoary, desiccated juniper still has a few live branches: flat, green needles, clustered blue berries, and all. It stands on a little spit of granite and thin soil projecting into the Atlantic between two long beaches, a tiny peninsula dignified with the overblown name of Cape Hedge.
