Juniper berries are not berries or a fruit but the female seed cone produced by the various species of junipers. In ancient and contemporary cultures the cones (berries) are used for medicinal purposes and to flavor foods and alcoholic beverages.
This ancient, weathered Juniper tree has had a great view of the Grand Canyon for a very long time. Junipers typically live from 350 to 700 years, with some even passing the millennium mark.

I like the silhouette of this juniper tree reaching for the stars of the milky way - as if poised to jump.
At Wallace State Park near Cameron, MO - about 39 deg n latitude (a latitude with attitude).

Another shot from 2 days ago. This one shows the pretty brown dorsum. I have never seen a Juniper Hairstreak perched with open wings. Flower is Comfry.

Together with the wild grasses and the salt spray roses, the Eastern Juniper (Eastern Red Cedar) is a common sight along the low dunes that line the beach near the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. This one had a bumper crop of juniper berries, which seem to glow in the late afternoon sun.

Beginning at the headspring/swimming area, the trail interacts with the small Juniper Creek before concluding at Fern Hammock Spring, a secluded spring closed to swimming in which a variety of wildlife can be seen relatively undisturbed (a picture of Fern Hammock can be found here www.flickr.com/photos/corran105/17282154546/).
Juniper Springs is located in the center of Florida's Ocala National Forest. The creek flows a distance of around ten miles to Lake George, Florida's second largest lake and a part of the St. Johns River. Some seven miles form one of Florida's most wild canoe runs.

My girlfriend and I followed one of the small creeks that come off of Red Lake peak about half way up the mountain. At times we had to get pretty far away from the creek because it was too steep. During one of these detours we found ourselves in this beautiful Juniper grove. They are one of my favorite trees - they look great lush and healthy like these, or when they are stunted, gnarly and half dead.
As the summer comes to an end there is a final flight of Juniper Hairstreaks. This was a glorious season for them as I saw more this season than in the past four put together.
It is also known as the Olive Hairstreak. They tend to fly near Juniper and Cedar because that is where they lay their eggs. I see them nectaring from daisies, clover, queen anne's lace, and goldenrod. Like all hairstreaks they are small and blend in well due to their color. The Wingspan is about 1"

Late May is a typical time around here for the larches to get frisky. Being monoecious, their friskiness can be taken care of entirely in their own company. "Ah," you say.
Thus, here, you can see two of the female "flowers" on one twig while somewhat behind and below are whole rows of male "flowers."
This was yesterday. Let us hope they found satisfaction.
"Juniper" is what I grew up calling this tree; its Latin name is Larix laricina and other English names include tamarack and hackmatack.
And of course they are not "flowers" by any rigorous botanical system; they are conelets.
