Jungfraujoch is a mountain pass in the Bernese Alps (3471 m above sea level), between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. There is a great tourist center with a hotel, several restaurants, shops and viewing terraces. The highest rack railway in Europe (Jungfraubahn) reaches here - its final station is carved into the rock. Above the pass, at an altitude of 3571 m above sea level. there is the Sphinx astronomical observatory (seen in this photo).

Jungfraujoch to przełęcz w Alpach Berneńskich (3471 m n.p.m.), między szczytami Mönch a Jungfrau. Znajduje się na niej wielki ośrodek turystyczny z hotelem, kilkoma restauracjami, sklepami i tarasami widokowymi. Dociera tu najwyższa w Europie kolejka zębata (Jungfraubahn) – jej końcowa stacja jest wykuta w skale. Ponad przełęczą, na wysokości 3571 m n.p.m. znajduje się obserwatorium astronomiczne Sphinx (widoczne na tym zdjęciu).

The Jungfraujoch is a saddle connecting two major 4000ers of the Bernese Alps: the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It lies at an elevation of 3,463 metres (11,362 ft) above sea level and is directly overlooked by the rocky prominence of the Sphinx. The Jungfraujoch is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch.Source Wikipedia

is the highest railway station in Europe.
The Jungfrau-Aletsch protected area is the first World Natural Heritage site in the Alps, it was inscribed in 2001.

Jungfraujoch, conocido como el “Techo de Europa”, es uno de los destinos turísticos más emblemáticos de Suiza y una excursión imprescindible para quienes visitan los Alpes suizos. Se sitúa a 3.454 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en medio del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO “Alpes suizos Jungfrau-Aletsch”, y alberga la estación de tren más alta de Europa.
•Acceso principal: Se puede llegar en tren desde Interlaken, pasando por Grindelwald o Lauterbrunnen hasta Kleine Scheidegg, donde se toma el famoso tren cremallera Jungfraubahn que atraviesa un túnel de 7 km hasta Jungfraujoch. Desde diciembre de 2020, el moderno teleférico “Eiger Express” permite llegar desde Grindelwald al glaciar Eigergletscher en solo 15 minutos, conectando allí con el tren cremallera.
•Duración del trayecto: Entre 1h 30min y 2h 10min, según la ruta elegida.
•Recomendación: Es aconsejable reservar asiento, especialmente en temporada alta, para evitar esperas.
•Observatorio Sphinx: Uno de los miradores más espectaculares de los Alpes, con vistas panorámicas al glaciar Aletsch y los picos Jungfrau, Mönch y Eiger. Se accede mediante un ascensor ultrarrápido.
•Glaciar Aletsch: El más largo de los Alpes, con casi 24 km de longitud, visible desde la cima.
•Palacio de Hielo: Galerías y esculturas de hielo dentro del glaciar, ideal para familias y niños.
•Alpine Sensation: Un recorrido expositivo sobre la historia y construcción del tren cremallera, con murales y fotografías históricas.
•Senderismo: Rutas señalizadas para caminar sobre la nieve y disfrutar del entorno alpino, como el Eiger Trail.
•Gastronomía: Restaurantes en la estación, con cocina suiza, internacional e india.
•Jungfrau Panorama: Proyección en 360º de la región, útil en días nublados.
Taken again on Slide film back in 2004 on a visit to Switzerland this is a view across to Monch, the Eiger's next-door neighbour from the Junfraujoch Mountain post.
The alps is definitely a place I have not been enough... there is something very fresh and rewarding about visiting the mountains. True natural beauty... and Switzerland is just a lovely country!
I thought I'd post another couple of old film shots from my days of travelling the world before family and kids. This shot was taken on a Pentax K1000 fully manual camera with a nifty 50mm lens. These where the days when I probably learnt the most about myself and photography. You could go away for a fortnight and you didn't even see what you had taken until your return and you sent the film of to Fuji for processing. I kept notes on each shot on shutter speed and aperture so I could reference back. Digital is so instantaneous... Im not saying that is a bad thing! Certainly quicker and easier to learn!
This is a photo taken from Jungfraujoch, also known as the Top of Europe. It stands at over 11,000 feet above sea level. It was a cold and windy day, but so amazing to be at these elevations among the clouds.
