I’ve been suffering from mental illness since I was a freshman in high school. I’ve been aware that I’ve been suffering from mental illness since I was a freshman in college. I’ve been receiving pharmaceutical treatment for my mental illness since I was a sophomore in college. I’m now about to turn 25.
Insane. Crazy. Unstable. Depressed. Anxious. Fucked up.
I’ve been called all of these things, and more. But for the past 5 years I’ve been swallowing pills every damn day to fit into society’s definition of healthy. Lexapro, prozac, buspirone, xanax, clonazepam.
Don’t get me wrong. Medication has done wonders for my mental health. I have a medical condition. An imbalance of serotonin in my brain. Just like someone takes medication to maintain their levels of cholesterol or insulin, I take medication to maintain my levels of serotonin. When I don’t take my medication, I get sick. When I do take my medication, I stay healthy. But for some reason, this is different in the eyes of, well, most people in our society.
I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I don’t give a shit what people think. I used to hide my mental illness, my need for medication, and my baseline lack of emotional stability. But as I get older, I realize that it’s just a part of who I am. Just like you might have diabetes or high blood pressure, I have depression and anxiety. It will always be a part of me, but it will never define me.
Stop the judgment. Stop the stigma.

This work is the third of three well-known large versions made by Watts of the composition Time, Death, and Judgment. It was worked upon constantly between 1889 and 1900 and was given by Watts in 1900 as part of a bequest to the Tate Gallery. The first version of Time, Death, and Judgment (originally titled Time and Death) was begun around 1870 and was bequeathed by Watts to the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa in 1886. The second large version was given by Watts to St. Paul's Cathedral in 1897, and is currently on loan to the Watts Gallery, Compton. Differences between these three large versions of Time, Death, and Judgment are few and relate merely to surface detail and handling rather than composition. A distinguishing feature of the Tate work is the exposed left leg of Time, which is fully draped in the two earlier versions. Smaller versions of the composition exist, such as that at the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield.
