judging by the insignia on cap and collar i'm surmising he is an officer in this photo having finished the 5 year course at the officer's academy in Panemunė in Kaunas. it's now a military base which i visited with my cousin Juozas (son of my father's brother Juozas) when i first visited lithuania. he quickly rose to the rank of captain in the airforce. his knowledge of basic german and english (both self taught) sent him on a trip to england to buy planes for the force. he was well paid and was able to pay off the debts his parents had accrued to put his two older brothers through school and university (Jonas a teacher; Juozas jnr a vet). the 3 brothers were the 1st from their village Žeimiai to achieve a higher education despite the family's very limited resources mainly due to the efforts of mother Felicia as her husband, old Juozas, didn't value education considering it impractical and unnecessary for a villager. father was Felicia's favourite but was unable to pursue his desire to study medicine as by then the family was too far in debt funding the education of the older brothers. the only avenue for a free further education in his situation in lithuania of the day was to go either to a seminary or into the military - he chose the latter. this is my mother's account anyway
