Arromanches est restée célèbre comme étant un des lieux historiques du débarquement de Normandie (nom de code : opération Neptune), notamment pour le port artificiel qui y fut installé. Ce port permit de débarquer de 9 000 à 22 000 tonnes de matériel par jour, lors de la bataille de Caen.
C'est sur la plage d'Arromanches que, lors de la bataille de Normandie, immédiatement après le jour J, 6 juin 1944, les Alliés établirent le port Mulberry B, un port artificiel provisoire afin de permettre le débarquement de matériel lourd, sans attendre la conquête de ports en eaux profondes, tels que ceux du Havre ou de Cherbourg

Le "platane de la liberté" est un platane de 33 mètres de haut, planté en 1797 dans l’ancienne cour du palais épiscopal de Bayeux. Il faisait partie de l’ensemble des Quatre arbres de la liberté. Seul celui-ci a survécu, malgré les nombreuses menaces d’abattage qui n’ont finalement pas abouti grâce à l’opposition des habitants. Le "Platane de la Liberté" a été classé "Monument naturel" en 1932 et bénéficie du label "Arbre remarquable de France".
The "plane tree of freedom" is a 33-meter-high plane tree, planted in 1797 in the old courtyard of the episcopal palace in Bayeux. It was part of the Four Trees of Freedom set. Only this one survived, despite numerous threats of slaughter that were ultimately unsuccessful thanks to the opposition of the inhabitants. The "plane tree of Liberty" was classified "Natural monument" in 1932 and benefits from the label "Remarkable tree of France".

Arromanches-les-Bains, couramment appelée Arromanches, est une commune française, située dans le département du Calvados en région Normandie.
Arromanches est restée célèbre comme étant un des lieux historiques du débarquement de Normandie (nom de code : opération Neptune), notamment pour le port artificiel qui y fut installé. Ce port permit de débarquer 9 000 tonnes de matériel par jour.
C'est sur la plage d'Arromanches que, lors de la bataille de Normandie, immédiatement après le jour J, les Alliés établirent le port Mulberry, un port artificiel provisoire afin de permettre le débarquement de matériel lourd, sans attendre la conquête de ports en eaux profondes, tels que ceux du Havre ou de Cherbourg. Bien que situé au centre de la zone de débarquement Gold Beach, Arromanches fut épargnée par le gros des combats le Jour J. Afin de permettre l'installation d'un port et son bon fonctionnement le plus rapidement possible, il ne fallait pas dégrader la plage et préserver les voies de communications aux alentours. Le port fut donc mis en service le 14 juin.

The original Pegasus bridge - the bridge crossing the Caen canal at the village Bénouville. It was a type of moveable bridge known as a bascule bridge, built in 1934. It was one of the first objectives at the start of D-Day, when the British 6th Airborne Division was to take the bridge and keep it secure in the middle of the night. The assault, under the command of Major John Howard was a success - and the bridge got named Pegasus after the Pegasus symbol of the British airborne forces.
The bridge was taken down in 1993 and for a while left to rust, but eventually sold to a nearby museum for 1 Franc - and replaced by a similar, but wider bascule bridge which can be seen here.
The crowd to the far right are some of people who had come to listen to a speech made by John Howard's daughter on the 69th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Virginie et Yann nous ont fait la surprise de nous réserver une chambre d'hôte près de Bayeux . Ça nous a fait trois jours de vacances intensives et un bain de Paco .
Il y eut des passages nuageux, et même quelques gouttes de pluie éparses mais globalement on peut dire avoir eu du beau temps .
Deuxième journée, après-midi . On descend sur la plage Omaha à Saint Laurent .

Pegasus bridge – le Pont du « Jour le Plus Long » - The "Longuest Day" Bridge
C’est le premier coin de France a avoir été libéré, à minuit vingt, le 6 juin 1944, par la 6e division aéroportée britannique sous le commandement du major John Howard.
It was the first place in France to be liberated, at 00.30 PM, during the Allied invasion of Normandy, the 6 June 1944, by the British 6th Airborne Division commanded by Major John Howard

Pegasus Bridge (anciennement pont de Bénouville) est un pont levant sur le canal de Caen. Le pont originel (1935) a été remplacé en 1994 par une structure similaire plus longue. L’ancienne se trouve maintenant dans le parc du Mémorial Pegasus.
Formely known as the Bénouville Bridge, it is a bascule bridge built in 1934 over the Caen Canal. It was removed in 1994 and replaced by an identical but wider and stronger structure. The orignal resides now in the grounds of the Pegasus Museum.

Le café Gondrée, situé à 20 mètres de là, est officiellement la première habitation de France continentale à avoir été libérée. Elle contient toujours un café, en plus d’un petit magasin musée. Certains pensent néanmoins que c’est la maison Picot, située juste en face, qui a été contrôlée en premier.
Café Gondrée is said to be the first French house to be liberated during D-Day. That one or the Picot house in front of it. It still is a café and contains a little muséum shop.

The church in Colleville suffered heavy damages in the Normandy landings in 1944 when seven German soldiers sat there giving coordinates to the German batteries at the coast - the tower was just a pile of rubble after the war. The church was rebuilt 1946-1951, to look like it had done before the war.
The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (Our Lady of the Assumption - referring to the Catholic idea of the assumption of the Virgin Mary, that is that she was taken to Heaven alive after her life here on Earth) in Colleville-sur-Mer. The church was built in the 12th and 13th century and became a historical monument in 1840.

As the D-Day 70th anniversary events take place in Normandy, here's a bit of history... These are shell holes left in a German Bunker at the Cité d'Aleth Fort, where we can find today the 39-45 Memorial in Saint-Malo.
