The power of the Catholic Church in Poland has dipped a little since its extraordinary zenith during the 1980s (when the Polish Pope soared high with the Solidarity protest movement) yet religion is still an integral part of the lives of the majority of Poles.
The Mariacki (St. Mary's) church is the largest in Cracow, and one of the most important places of worship in Poland. Built of red brick and with two towers of unequal height and form, it is not conventionally attractive.
Whatever qualms one might have about St. Mary's, a visit to the basilica during mass might prove to be a revelation. Regardless of one's faith, to see the church packed to the doors, the altar-piece gleaming in the sunlight, and to hear the roar of the organ above, is a truly uplifting experience.
St. Mary's was Karol Wojtyła's home cathedral prior to his election as Pope John Paul II.

I was there, and those were some of the most important moments of my generation. I was very emotive those days, It was unforgettable and so intense for me..
I will never forget what I lived there in those days.

Wadowice é um município no sul da Polónia, situada a 50 quilômetros de Cracóvia. Conta com 19.500 habitantes (2001). É mundialmente conhecida por ser a terra natal do Papa João Paulo II.
Karol Józef Wojtyła, nasceu em Wadowice, filho de um tenente do exército dos Habsburgos, de quem herdou o nome, também chamado Karol Wojtyła.
Foi Sumo Pontífice da Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana e Soberano da Cidade do Vaticano de 16 de outubro de 1978 até a sua morte no dia 02 de Abril de 2005. Teve o terceiro maior pontificado documentado da história; apenas os papas São Pedro reinou trinta e quatro anos, e Papa Pio IX reinou por trinta e um anos. Foi o único Papa eslavo e polonês até a sua morte, e o primeiro Papa não-italiano desde o holandês Papa Adriano VI em 1522.
Sua casa hoje que se encontra ao lado da Igreja se tornou um patrimônio histórico onde muitos peregrinos tem a oportunidade de entrar e conhecer um pouco da sua história.
