Subway Inn on the Upper East Side was in business for more than 77 years before it was forced to close in December 2014 after it's lease was not renewed. One of its most famous customers was Marilyn Monroe , who filmed the "Seven Year Itch" nearby and stopped in for drinks. Arsemio Salinas, who has owned the #divebar since 2007, after working as a porter, bartender and manager for the original owner, luckily was able to relocate the #bar less than 2 blocks away at Second Avenue and 60th Street and re-installed the iconic #vintage #neonsign, the original wooden bar and stools and even the bar booths. #July4th, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island will hold its annual #hotdog eating contest. This iconic #frankfurter store opened 100 years ago as a small 5-foot long counter selling #hotdogs for a nickel. Nathan and Ida Handwerker, #Polish immigrants, started the business insisting on selling quality specially spiced franks which came in natural casings and freshly fried potatoes. @denoswonderwheelpark The #wonderwheel was erected in 1920 and stands 150 feet high and holds 144 people at once. Its unusual design for a #ferriswheel incorporates sections of curved tracks connecting an outer wheel and a smaller inner wheel, with 16 swinging cars which roll back and forth between the two wheels. There are also 8 stationary cars. All of the cars give riders panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Jay Dee Bakery in Forest Hills, Queens was open for nearly 60 years before it closed in 2009. We loved its #ArtDeco #storefront which had an amazing reverse channel #neonsign with a unique #font. We also loved the Ravenna green mosaic columns surrounding the windows which had an orange and red vertical swirl pattern. Jay Dee Bakery was known for its kosher cookies including rainbow 🌈 and cherry cookies as well as their classic black and white cookie. When SL Green began knocking down a full block of prewar commercial buildings next to Grand Central Terminal last year to make way for its new 1,401-foot-tall office tower at One Vanderbilt Avenue it revealed this #vintage #sign for Sozodont, a popular brand of oral hygiene 😁product from the mid nineteenth-century. Sozodont was created in 1859 and its was chosen from the #Greek word "sozo", meaning to save, and "dontia", meaning teeth. We love its statement "Cleans Teeth Clean- Our Only Claim". Lenox Lounge in Harlem was founded in 1939 by the Greco family. It was named for its location on Lenox Avenue in #Harlem. Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Miles Davis performed in this iconic #jazz club. Alvin Reed purchased the lounge in 1988 and restored much of its original #ArtDeco interior including the famous "Zebra Room" where live music 🎶 was played nightly. Sadly, #LenoxLounge was forced to close in 2012 after the rent was increased from $10,000 to $20,000 a month. Alvin Reed took the original #neonsign and much of the interior in hopes that he could reopen the club at another location but to this date, Lenox Lounge has not reopened. Bright Food Shop in Chelsea was in business from 1938-2007. Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. Earlier this year, they reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. @americansignmuseum. In honor of #memorialday 🇺🇸 yesterday we are posting our photo of the former Navy Yard Cocktail Lounge ⚓️ in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This #divebar was in business from 1907 to 2010. Steve Frankel, who owned the business since 1999, lost his lease when the building was sold to a developer. The #cocktail 🍸lounge originally served the tens of thousands of Brooklyn Navy Yard personnel who worked in the shipbuilding industry,and later catered to the workers in the many industrial businesses and film and television studios, which have rented spaces at the revitalized Navy Yard industrial park. This was one of many Greenpoint, Brooklyn #furriers that catered to the large group of Polish immigrants who made the neighborhood the center of #NYC 's Polish community. By 1990, eighty percent of the area's residents were #Polish but that number has drastically been reduced since #Greenpoint has become gentrified. 🍳🍔 Empire Diner is one of the last free-standing diners left in Manhattan and is located inside a 1946 Fodero Dining Car. It closed in 2015, after a second failed attempt to revive it. The letters uniquely are placed on a black Carrara-pigmented glass background. The owner is renovating the entire #storefront and is not replacing the 1946 #neon. We hope that it will be saved! Luigi's Pizza in Park Slope, Brooklyn has been in business since 1973. We absolutely love @luigispizzaparkslope 's #signage with the #script #lettering and are huge fans of their fresh mozzarella #pizza 🍕which is sprinkled with their home-grown fresh herbs. The 2nd-generation owner Giovanni Lanzo told us, "my father Luigi emigrated here from Calabria where he was a farmer. He opened this #Pizzeria using his family's recipes for the sauce and pizza. He still grows many of the fresh ingredients we use including tomatoes 🍅 and herbs 🌿 at his farm in Staten Island". Mr. Figaro Unisex Hairstyling in Sheepshead Bay was established in 1977 by Jerry May aka Mr. Figaro. Mr. May was born in Russia in 1927 into a family of barbers and not only learned to cut #hair but also to sing #opera at a young age. He told us that he "took the name Mr. Figaro after the original singing #barber from Rossini's 1816 comic opera."
