#JJ_FORUM_0895- @iamzachrogers inspired our "Golden Hour" theme today with this submission from our "What Drives You?" event a couple days ago. His photo essay was one of my favorites. Make sure you check it out.

 

#JJ_INSTATIP - Here's a little tip for today's theme. What photographers call the "Golden Hour" is the half hour before and after sunset or sunrise. The light is appealing at this time because it is warm and comes from the side not overhead.

Most importantly though, the light is coming from a large source. Half the sky and not the relatively tiny source of the sun itself. This makes for soft light. Your camera likes soft light because its easier for it to capture the smaller difference in shadows and highlights. "Nerd speak" for this is a reduced dynamic range. :-).

If you're shooting a portrait your subject will like soft light because it flatters skin and features. Portraits, landscapes, basically anything you shoot during this time of day will look better than mid day. Give it a try. :-).

#JJ_EXPLAINED- Are you new to the community? It's not as confusing as it seems at first. :-). Here's the deal.

 

Sometimes it can be hard to get your pictures seen and find inspiring photographers to follow. That's why I created the forum 3 years ago. It's a place to come together for inspiration and encouragement.

 

Every morning, NYC time, we make a post announcing our new theme and tag. Your job is to tag images that fit the theme. You can use shots you have already posted but we really love to see the theme inspire you to find new shots. The @jj_editors, @kevinkuster and I scour the tag and repost our favorite submissions through out the day. Over half a million people might see your pic! Pretty cool stuff.

 

We are ALL about keeping things simple, but in the spirit of our motto, "Create to connect", we ask that you follow our only "rule". We call it the 1-2-3 rule. For every 1 image you tag, comment on 2 in the tag and like 3 others.
