MUSIC IN BLACK AND WHITE.

Thanks to Emily and Kevin for manning the forum the last couple days.

Today's tag is #jj_forum_0863. Every Wednesday we get together and share our best shots in black and white. Show us black and white "Music" themed shots today. Thanks to @navema for submitting this shot and inspiring today's theme.

Here's a tip that goes well with today's theme.

.

Use light and shadow to isolate your subject and simplify your composition.

.

Want to know the best way to find great light? Go somewhere that someone has already set it up for you. Somewhere like a concert. Stage lighting designers and photographers have the the same goal. Direct the eye of the viewer to what is important.

.

A big part of that job is covering what isn't important. This shot is a great example. Who knows what's on the other side of the piano. A stack of folding chairs? A pile of dirty table clothes? It doesn't matter because it is hidden in the shadows. That's no accident. Whether you backlight and blow out the background or shoot into a relatively dark area like this, the limited dynamic range of your camera is a powerful tool. Try it. Use it. You'll like it. :-). Promise.

Today I'm making a special effort to remind you to keep up with your 1-2-3 guys. It's our only "rule" and the truth is you'll get more than you give. Trust me, it works. My absolute favorite image had to come from the queen of black and white musicians..... @theerinmargaret . Seriously y'all, don't believe me? Go look at her gorgeous feed. @theerinmargaret is a stunning artist who captures people as if she was born to do it. I love how specifically this set of images looks straight from the 40s or 50s, with such a real, genuine feel. Erin really gets it. Go check her out guys, give her some #jj love and follows. She deserves it.
