788 (SN16OHF) seen on Pell Street as it heads to Central Reading, Friar Street from Coley Park on route 11.

Allocated to the JetBlack 1 (Newbury - Reading), 788 made an unusual appearance on the Bronze 11 this morning, a route allocated Scania K270UB Enviro300.

File: 2023005-0091

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

Why did I use the title Black Waiting for this photo? Well, when preparing my photos for uploading, I make a list of what’s next to upload, and most of them tend to have a very short description, often in the form of codenames, of what the photo is about.

In this case, I see a black racing car, and the driver is waiting for his turn, hence the title Black Waiting.

This is Edmund Burgess from Lavenham, in his glossy or jet black Gould GR55 open-wheel, single-seat, formula car, bearing the number 115.

His car’s engine is a 2500cc size, and notice the Avon brand name on the tyres.

Here in the photograph, he is seen alongside another car (seen on the left of the photo), and they are waiting for the officials to beckon them forwards, each of them, one-by-one to the starting line.

The Gould GR55 is designed, developed and built by Gould Racing, a British company since 2003, for most hillclimbing motorsport drivers.

About Shelsley Walsh.

Shelsley Walsh is a motorsports speed hill climb track in Worcestershire, and organised by the Midland Automobile Club (MAC).

It is one of the oldest motorsports event, having started in 1905, and held events every year, except for the two World Wars.

It is also a notably steep course by today’s hill climb standards, rising 328ft / 100m over its 1000 yards / 914 metres length.

The track and course do not belong to MAC, it is leased from the local landowner. The original lease ran for 99 years, and in 2005, a new lease was signed for the next 99 years.

The 1961 Dodge Flitewing Concept Car was a futuristic and innovative design created by Chrysler's advanced styling studio under the direction of Virgil Exner. It was first introduced to the public on December 5, 1961, in Central Park, Manhattan. The car featured two "flip-up" window-roof canopies that automatically activated when the doors were opened or closed, controlled by pushbuttons. This design aimed to improve visibility and ease of entry and exit by eliminating a center post.

Although the Flitewing was initially intended to influence future exterior designs at Chrysler, its ambitious features, such as the gullwing side-glass and windshield assemblies, were deemed impractical for mass production due to issues with dependability, sealing, and cost. Despite this, some elements of the Flitewing's design, like its sleek lines and subtle tail fins, can be seen in later Chrysler models, like the Chrysler Imperial.

The Flitewing was powered by a 383-cubic-inch V8 engine with ram-induction intake manifolding, producing 330 horsepower, and paired with a Torqueflite automatic transmission. It also featured advanced gadgets for its time, such as platform bucket seats and a unique speedometer that looked like a thermometer with 13 lit windows.

As for its current whereabouts, the Flitewing has not been seen in public for many years, and its exact location is unknown. It is believed that the car was displayed at various auto shows until around 1964, but its fate remains a mystery.

I call him Hansel -

Decided to take advantage of what I feel is the last weekend of decent color in my area, and take my car out for a couple of pics at Valley Forge National Park.

Autumn was really late this year and the colors really did not start to burst until last weekend. Despite our first cold snap (25 degrees this morning), it was still worthwhile to get out and enjoy the scenery.

ADL Enviro 400 790 / SN16 OHH, previously in the Countywide livery and repainted into the Jetblack Newbury - Reading branding in 2019, is seen leaving Newbury Bus Station on a route 1 to Reading.

I walked around the corner and this car was right in front of me.

I started walking past when I realized it needed its picture taken. The original scan preview was kind of thin so when I got to the actual frame of 6x7 this is what I saw. I was blown away.

Great thrill for 47 year old slide film and cross processed as negative.

Shot with Pentax 67 and 35mm fisheye f 4.5. On well expired Kodak 6037 Ektachrome EPT 160T from 1978! Shot at ISO 80. Cross processed in Fuji RA4 concentrate at 1:25 (20 ml in 480 ml). Processed at 80 degrees F for 12 minutes under constant agitation. Potassium ferricyanide bleach for 8 minutes at room temp and fixed for 6 minutes in hypam 1:4.

This is some of the original E-6 film so I added a pinch of potassium hydroxide to raise the developer ph to 11.1 which is the same as the optimal e-6 color developer ph.

To go along with the issue, here is the track for issue 10. If you care to, listen to it before, during or after the issue, I feel it elevates the experience :)

A large, double-headed axe slammed down into the shoulder of the zombified corpse of Punch. The yellow construct shifted, the axe morphing into a tiger that tore the zombie's head clean off. As the body continued to move, a second tiger formed, sinking its teeth into the corpse's hand. The grey, rotted limb fell to the ground, the black ring around its finger screeching out as it turned to dust.

Thaal Sinestro hovered above the rocky ground of Qward, his arms folded across his chest. His eyes were emotionless as they stared at the Black Lantern's body, shifting from its mind controlled state as it re-entered the afterlife.

"Arkillo," he began, speaking into the yellow ring around his finger, "is quadrant four secure?"

"It is," the beast replied. "As are five and six."

"Good, return to the battery and recharge while you can," Thaal ordered, looking out at the valley across from him. "I'll perform one final sweep before returning as well."

Thaal ended the transmission, hovering towards the final quadrant of the planet's habitable space. The valley brought back memories of a time before he was the ruthless dictator of sector -1. Times before he was a hollow man chasing an unachievable goal.

"A prophecy?" Thaal asked, sitting atop the throne of Korugar.

"Yes… the end of life as we know it," Abin Sur, his partner and brother-in-law, replied with a sad nod. "I do not know much, but I do know you are to play a key role…"

"Your prophecy mentioned me?" Thaal asked with a chuckle. "I don't believe in fairy tales, Abin."

"This is not a game, Thaal!" Abin shouted, the guards around Thaal raising their weapons. "I know her death hurt you… it hurt me too… but you've become recluse! The Corps needs you, I need you! We have to stop this now… or it'll be too late."

"You may leave, Abin," Thaal said, waving his hand in the air. "I wish you the best of luck."

At the center of the valley, Thaal spotted another of Black Hand's monsters. It was much different from the one before, more animalistic with bones protruding from the corpse's torso. Lighting his ring up, Thaal aimed and shot a large blade at its hand. Before the construct could connect, another construct struck the beast, severing the limb.

Thaal looked up, spotting his daughter lowering herself to the ground. His head tilted, watching as she approached him with a smile on her face.

"That seems to be every quadrant taken care of, father," she said, arms crossed. "What is our next-"

"I told you to stay at the Battery!" Thaal shouted, catching Soranik off guard. "You were tasked to guard it!"

"I just slayed that monster," she said, confusion spread across her face.

"That is not what you were ordered to do!"

"You put me in time out during a crisis!" she shouted back, pushing her father away. "I am your third in command, I'm worth more than guard duty!"

"Cease this nonsense of your self appointed titles!" he said, eyes narrowing. "You are not my third in command and you never will be."

"Stop acting like I'm a child!" she shouted, fists clenching tight. "Like I'm not good enough!"

"You're too good!" Thaal fired back, stunning the girl. "You're too good… too pure for this… for me. This never should've been your path."

"Father…"

"You are the last remnant of your mother. The last remnant of what little good I had in me. You-"

"Nekron's Curse: Blackhole"

Both Thaal and Soranik turned, watching as the corpse regrew its hand. It was only then that Thaal noticed the severed limb had no black ring.

"I thought…"

"You thought wrong."

The corpse roared, its chest splitting open like a mouth. Thaal realized the bones he saw earlier were the teeth of the horror in front of him. Its tongue flailed around, the sharp tip dripping black goo. The teeth were also stained by the goo, growing larger in size as the mouth fully opened. Pincer-like claws grew from its hands and feet, causing Soranik to step backwards.

Before Thaal could react, its mouth sent out a blast of black energy, hitting him directly. The shot sent him careening into the valley wall, where his body indented the rock. As he attempted to stand, a second blast hit him, pushing him further into the stone structure.

"Back off!" Soranik shouted, raising her ring.

As the corpse turned towards her, it screeched out once more. Thaal raised his head from the rubble, his gaze finding Soranik. His eyes widened as he watched his daughter freeze her arm falling to her side.

"Soranik!" Thaal shouted, reaching out to the woman. He watched the fear fall over her face, the terror run through her blood. The yellow ring around her finger fell to the ground, depowering her. As her suit faded, the corpse leapt forward, it's mouth wide open.

"Your child… what shall you name her?"

Thaal sat beside his wife, Arin, who gently rocked the infant in her arms. He looked at the woman, his smile stretching from ear to ear.

"Soranik," she whispered, staring at the child with affection. "A child as graceful as the winds of Korugar."

-^-

"Soranik, Get down!"

Thaal held up a shield of viridian, blocking a barrage of bullets. Behind him laid Arin, crimson seeping through her clothes. Soranik sat beside her, holding her mother's lifeless hand crying out in terror.

Thaal screamed out, flying forward through one of the tanks. The vehicle exploded as he exited, his blue and black outfit staining red. A claw construct shot from his ring, stabbing into another tank. The claws then slashed upwards, ripping the metal in half, along with the soldiers inside. Turning towards another tank, the driver quickly turned its cannon, firing a shell directly at Thaal. Thaal raised his hand, pincer constructs forming and snatching the shot midair. Swinging his arm, the shell flew through the air into a cluster of tanks, destroying them all. The pincers then stabbed into the tank, tearing the top off and exposing the pilot inside.

Thaal returned to Soranik and Arin, his body drenched in more blood than his wife. Kneeling down, he held her hand, begging to feel a pulse. His teeth grit as he squeezed her hand, tears building up in his eyes. Closing his eyes, he screamed out, firing an immense blast of energy out towards another tank.

His eyes then met Soranik's, red and puffy with tears streaming from them. He let out a stuttered breath, picking the child up and flying to the nearest evacuation ship.

"Natus!" he called out, gaining the attention of two of the boardees.

"Thaal?"

"Please… please take her," he mumbled, the light in his eyes dim. "I will make sure these ships are able to escape."

The man held the child out two the couple. After a moment of hesitation, the two took Soranik aboard.

"Papa, no!" Soranik cried, reaching out to Thaal's blood-soaked body.

"I am sorry, Soranik…" he whispered, turning back to the battlefield. "Go, now."

Thaal closed his eyes, listening to the crying of his daughter as the ship's cargo ramp closed. The green of his ring shined brighter than it had ever before as he rose into the air, lightning up the night sky. Energy seeped from the ring before he slashed across the sky, a line of green ripping through anything and everything in its path.

"I will not lose you too."

-^-

"Soranik Natu… it has been a long time."

Thaal sat on the throne of Korugar, a green cape draped over his shoulders. The guards at his side stood firm as the woman entered the room.

"Soranik Sinestro," she corrected, kneeling before the throne. "I am your daughter, not theirs."

Thaal stayed silent for a moment, frowning at the words. "What brings you back to Korugar?" he asked, crossing his arms. "This planet is no longer your home."

"It is my home, father!" she shouted, standing up tall. "I have returned to rule by your side! It's what I was born to do!"

-^-

"How did you get that ring!?" Thaal shouted, staring at his daughter, now clad in a Sinestro Corps uniform.

"It came to me…" she said, a satisfied smile on her face. "It told me I can instill great fear."

Thaal stared at the woman, at her smile. He watched the way the smile warped, her face contorting. Her face changed into his own.

"Take the ring off… now!" Thaal demanded, holding his palm out in front of him. "Take it off and hand it to me, now."

"What?" she asked, her smile falling. "What do you mean give it to you?"

"I did not stutter," Thaal said, eyes narrowing at the girl. "Take. It. Off."

"You… you don't get to order me like that," Soranik fired back, holding the ring close to her. "The ring chose me. It came to me!"

"I am the leader of the Sinestro Corps and your father," Thaal said, taking a step forward, his hand still extended. "I overrule what 'destiny' chooses. What you chose."

"You… you just don't trust me yet," Soranik said, shaking her head and levitating herself. "I'll show you, I promise. I'll train, I'll strengthen my body and mind… I'll become a ruler as strong and as fearful as you… I won't disappoint you, father."

Before he could speak, Soranik flew away from the cliff side, leaving Thaal alone. His eyes lingered on the yellow trail she left behind, a trail like his own. His gaze shifted down to his hand, to the yellow ring around his finger.

"That…" he mumbled looking back up to the fading trail, "is what I fear."

-^-

"Welcome back, father."

Thaal froze as he entered the Central Battery. "Soranik?" he mumbled, staring at the woman. "What are you doing here?"

Thaal looked to Arkillo, who shrugged back.

"You've been imprisoned for years," she said, a proud smile on her face. "I've been leading the Corps in your stead, awaiting your return."

"Amon was designated to lead incase of Arkillo and I's imprisonment," he frowned, clenching his fist. "You had no juri-"

"Amon was killed a few months after you were locked away," she admitted, looking down, holding her fist to her heart. "A Thanagar warship arrived in search of the Weaponers. We fought hard, but we lost many and were on the brink of annihilation. Someone needed to step up and lead us to victory. I was that someone."

"You should not have been the one to do so," Thaal mumbled, walking past the woman, placing his ring against the battery. "Leave my sight."

"I… dammit!" Soranik cursed, storming out from the battery, leaving Thaal and Arkillo alone.

"You should just tell her," Arkillo spoke, placing his own ring against the battery. "If you don't, she won't stop."

Thaal didn't respond, only looking into the yellow of the battery. Looking into his own fears.

For an instant, less than even a second, green light flashed in Thaal's eyes as he pulled free of the rubble.

In the next moment he shot forward like a missle, crashing into the zombie before it could reach the girl. His arm slashed upwards before his daughter could blink, a scythe of yellow tearing through the ground and the corpse's arm. Twisting his arm midair, the scythe shifted into a broadsword. The blade came crashing down into the monster's head, not stopping until it was deep in his stomach. Pulling his arm forward, the blade shot towards Thaal, ripping the zombie open like a butterfly tearing from a cocoon. Its stomach's mouth screeched out, tongue flailing wildly. The muscle shot forward, its razor sharp tip piercing Thaal's shoulder. With a grunt, Thaal's ring shot out four large spikes, both the zombie's feet and hands pinning down to the ground. A blade extended from each spike, stabbing into the limbs and dragging forward until they reached the torso. As the corpse's mouth opened wide, attempting to bite the spikes, Thaal noticed the black metal at the base of its tongue.

Narrowing his eyes, he reached down to the ground, gripping the muscle tightly. Two block constructs formed around his arm, stopping the zombie from chomping down onto Thaal. Gritting his teeth, his ring began to glow.

"Dad…"

Thaal turned his head, black blood covering his face. He panted heavily, staring at his daughter. Her eyes were filled with fear, but she wasn't scared of the zombie. She was scared of him. He watched her slowly back away, tears rolling down her face. His own eyes narrowed, the yellow flaring bright.

"That's right," he said, staring into the girl's eyes. 'Run away. Don't get close. Don't look at me. Don't love me…'

Thaal Sinestro.

Thaal's head turned from his daughter, hiding the tear that rolled down his cheek. Yellow energy began to course throughout his body, covering it in golden armor. He watched as the light inside the monster grew brighter.

You have instilled a fear strong enough to be detected by Parallax

'Don't be me,' he thought to himself, turning back to her with a twisted, sad smile on his face.

"Fear… me…"

The charged blast from Thaal's ring fired off, sending shockwaves throughout the valley. The body was vaporized in seconds, the black ring following shortly after.

Thaal stood tall, his ring's glow dimming slightly. Looking over his shoulder, he saw his daughter completely frozen.

"D-d-dad…"

Thaal didn't speak, instead looking up to the stars. Deep in space, he saw an object flying towards the planet. Soranik quickly fumbled with her ring, sliding it back on her finger. Her suit formed, but the terror in her eyes didn't falter. Raising his arm, Thaal formed a shield around the two lanterns that protected them from the impact of the falling object. As the dust cleared, Thaal's eyes narrowed, staring at the corpse that kneeled in front of him.

"Soranik… get back to the battery," he ordered, finding no objections this time.

Thaal watched as his opponent rose from the ground, skin a pale pink with a gash running along his chest. His jetblack cape blew idly in the wind, the hood falling from his head.

"You made a proper soldier out of her," the corpse said, its black eyes narrowing. "What would Arin say about that?"

"She wouldn't say anything," Thaal responded, his own cape bellowing. "Those who are dead aren't meant to ever speak again. You have been defiled, Abin."

"I have been, and yet," he said, looking down at his rotting hands, "you don't attack me. Is that guilt?"

"Perhaps it is," Thaal mused, looking up at the stars. "Your prophecy came true after all. I was even chosen as a light bearer… I take it that is why you're here?"

"I am not in control," Abin said, opening and closing his fist. "I am merely a puppet for the Black Hand."

"And yet… you don't attack me either."

The two stood silent, a harsher gust of wonder blowing against their still frames. Thaal frowned, looking down at his ring. "I am sorry, Abin," he mumbled, looking back up at the man. "Perhaps, in another reality, you would be a paragon alongside me…"

"You say this, and still… you would not change what happened?"

"Never in a million lifetimes."

-^-

Thaal crashed down onto planet earth, his ring glowing a brilliant green. His head swiveled from left to right, searching the canyon.

"Abin!" he shouted out, his voice echoing against the rocks. "Abin!"

Taking off into the air, he began to search the area once more, hoping for any signs of the man. His eyes lit up at the sight of a faint, dying green glow across the canyon. His body zoomed forward through the clouds, approaching the light as fast as he could. Growing closer to the light, his body froze in the air, eyes widening at the sight.

The ship was destroyed. Chunks of the metal were strewn along the ground and the cockpit was set ablaze. He watched as Abin's body, wounded with a deep gash along his chest, burned away in the center of the cockpit. His gaze shifted from his partner, eyes locking onto the person standing just outside the flames.

He was a human male, his hair a deep brown and skin a fair white. He wore some sort of jumpsuit that covered him head to toe, along with a breathing apparatus around his neck. Thaal's eyes, however, were focused on the man's hand. On the green ring around his finger and battery held tight.

Closing his eyes, a single tear fell down his face. He turned away from the crash, flying off back into space.

"Goodbye, old friend."

-^-

"I thought I sensed my old ring," Thaal mumbled, staring at the decaying corpse of Abin. "Baz, was it?"

Floating behind Thaal, clad in blue, was Simon, his arms crossing his chest. "Yeah, don't think we've ever formally met," he responded, looking down at the destruction strung throughout the valley. "I take it Parallax already joined you?"

"Indeed… are the others ready?" he asked, finally turning to look at the man.

"You were the last one," Simon nodded, "everyone else is on route to Hand."

"Excellent," Thaal mumbled, lifting off into the air. "Then let us end this. For everyone's sake."

Route 1C (Jet Black)

Newbury Wharf Bus Station

I call him Hansel -

Decided to take advantage of what I feel is the last weekend of decent color in my area, and take my car out for a couple of pics at Ridley Creek State Park.

Autumn was really late this year and the colors really did not start to burst until last weekend. Despite our first cold snap (25 degrees this morning), it was still worthwhile to get out and enjoy the scenery.

Included with Reading Buses purchase of Newbury and District in 2018 were 12 Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 MMC double deckers new to Newbury and District in 2016 and predominantly used on school contracts since new. Reading Buses has however decided to repaint seven to replace the existing 2011 Alexander Dennis Enviro 400's used on the 'jet black 1' route between Reading and Newbury, themselves ex Newbury and District Buses. The first 'MMC' to be painted in 'jet black' colours was SN16OHF (788) seen here bound for Reading at Parkway, Newbury town centre. The jet black livery has also had a slight refresh to match the other recent branded liveries in the Reading Buses fleet on the sky blue, berry and purple routes in Reading.
