The extravagant monastery that was funded by the wealth and trade that flowed from the Portugal’s colonies during the 16th century. The site was closely associated with the early Portuguese explores, as it was the location that Vasco da Gama spent his last night before his epic voyage to India.
The most iconic building in all of Lisbon is without a doubt the Jeronimos Monastery. Completed over 400 years ago, this spectacular building attracts visitors from across the world and is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You may have to wait an hour or two to get in, but it’s worth queuing for such a long time. The sheer size and architectural brilliance are awe-inspiring.

Jerónimos Monastery is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal; it was secularised on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa.
The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501, and was completed 100 years later.
Manuel I selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery, whose role it was to pray for the King's eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to navigators and sailors who departed from the port of Restelo to discover lands around the world.

The Jeronimos
The old monastery of San Jerónimo el Real, popularly known as "Los Jerónimos", was one of the most important monasteries in Madrid, originally ruled by the Order of San Jerónimo. Next to it there was the so-called Royal Room, later expanded as the Buen Retiro Palace in the times of Felipe IV.
Today, the church, converted into the parish of San Jerónimo, and a Renaissance cloister still remain from the convent.
Its long and exciting history makes this building one of the most unique in our city Madrid. At night it projects a cozy image and invites passersby to visit.
The church and the convent were closely linked to the life of the Court and the Spanish monarchy. The temple was the frequent scene of funerals, heirs' swearing, weddings and royal proclamations.
