aka Waiting for the stupid English tourist to leave.. :-)

I went back for a third walk round just before closing time and got lucky as most of the other tourists had left. Actually the staff were quite patient and understanding, so I was able to get a few empty or nearly-empty shots of the place.

Monasterio de Los Jerónimos. Lisboa

A masterpiece of 16th-century architecture in Portugal, the Monastery of Jerónimos is listed as a National Monument and is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It is located in one of Lisbon’s most noble areas, a both historical and monumental setting overlooking the river Tagus. It stands next to the also iconic Tower of Belém and Belém Cultural Centre.

Being symbolically linked to one of the most important moments of national recollection, the monastery, founded by King D. Manuel, still preserves most of the magnificent structures that contributed to its international recognition, including its 16th-century Cloister, the friars’ Refectory and the Library.

Jerónimos Monastery Lisbon

Da Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

is a building in Lisbon (Portugal), in the Belém district.

The associated church of Santa Maria de Belém is dedicated to Mary.

The Mosteiro de Belém is one of the most important buildings of the Manueline (Manuel I, 1495-1521), a Portuguese variant of the late Gothic, which also contains some elements of the Renaissance.

Among other things, it houses the sarcophagi of Fernando Pessoa, Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões and various Portuguese kings.

The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the top tourist attractions in Lisbon. Everyone wants marvel at the impressive architecture, in particular the beautiful cloisters on two levels (ground and top floors) Almost everyone - some are not willing to queue for 2 hours for a ticket to get in. Same for me... so I went to the museum right next to it, purchased a ticket for the monastery and walked right in :-)

A few shots grabbed just before closing time..

Be Patient (Deleted on the purge)

The tourist will eventually leave for some seconds, or you will be able to avoid the anoying kid that just dont get the hint of a guy pointing with a camera and then looking at him with an angry eye. They will move. Even bus groups.

The Jerónimos Monastery or Hieronymites Monastery is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal. It became the necropolis of the Portuguese royal dynasty of Aviz in the 16th century but was secularized on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa.

The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the late Portuguese Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was erected in the early 1500s near the launch point of Vasco da Gama's first journey, and its construction funded by a tax on the profits of the yearly Portuguese India Armadas. In 1880, da Gama's remains and those of the poet Luís de Camões (who celebrated da Gama's first voyage in his 1572 epic poem, The Lusiad), were moved to new carved tombs in the nave of the monastery's church, only a few meters away from the tombs of the kings Manuel I and John III, whom da Gama had served. In 1983, the Jerónimos Monastery was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém. [Wikipedia]
